Essential Quality ran a lot farther too and that means Medina won because he got the lead and the shortest way around the track. I do not believe the owners of the two horses who slammed EQ did it for Bob Baffert's benefit. Do you?

Congrats to Bob Baffert, the owners and, of course, Medina Spirit. To paraphrase a famous saying "its not the horse in the fight but the fight in the horse." I remember Silver Charm (as a race fan of many years) and I know that being a million dollar horse with lots of pedigree doesn't guarantee you success as a race horse. I remember the great John Henry who had Old Bob Bowers (very poor pedigree) as his sire and yet "John" went on to have a HOF career right up until he was aged nine. Yes, bloodlines are important but genetics are a funny thing in that a particular sire or dam can produce genetic gold in a filly/colt. Remember "Daredevil" recently? He wasn't thought much of and send off to stud at a turkish farm until Swiss Skydiver and Shedaresthedevil showed their stuff. Then he was "borrowed" back asap to breed in the states even though he still belongs to the Turkish racing authority.

Always liked this man.He is grateful for his success, but knows that you have to have “racing luck” to get all the cookies. He talks like he knows that to be the “man” you have to have many hard working “ men and women” behind the scenes doing most of the hard work. That horse Bob is referring to that didn't breakwell or get a trip was Rock Your World, broke slow, then the door was slammed shut when Essential Quality to his inside and the outside horse both came into him blocking any chance to get to the lead. Hoping they both show up at the Preakness to settle the score. Now 1-1.

Umm RYW ran into Essential Quality who was about a 1/4 lenght ahead at the initial break so RYW got the worst of it but it was still a body blow to Essential Quality and effectively ended either horses chances. At leat EQ still made a great run but had to run about an extra 10 lenghts than the first 3 horses. There is a reason it's 61 years since a horse has won from the 14 and most win from 7 - 10 stalls.

Medina Spirit had never finished worse than second and he lost twice to Life is Good which probably was the best three year old leading up to the Derby but got injured. His loss in the Santa Anita Derby was because Rock Your World got off to an uncontested lead. When horses do that they often run more relaxed and keep going longer. That is just what happened to Medina Spirit in the Derby.

I was alive to seven horses in the Derby to hit, the Pick 6. I did not use Medina Spirt but had Mandaloun. I've never hit a pick 6 and if the 7 gets up ( Mandaloun) I'm going to cash for the biggest hit of my life playing the horses for what, 45 years now. This one left a "real bad taste" in mouth (once again) and I want to believe Baffert but NOT THIS RACE AND NOT NOW. I'm done playing, I've had enough of the tough beats and the "WHAT IF'S" ...... He is a great jockey but the difference was that Rock Your World was slammed into Essential Quality by Highly Motivated costing both of them dearly. EQ still finished up close after running much further being wide the whole way. Velasquez did help control the pace leaving energy for Medina to call on in the stretch. The other riders underestimated Medina's stamina and tenacity and no one went after him, pressuring him. That won't happen at Pimlico though.

For example, Justify tested positive for scolamine but it does not help a horse run faster and it was baled up in his hay in the form of jimson weed which grows wild in California and many other states. Where's the proof? It is not fair to accuse without it because anyone can claim anything and some will repeat the accusations without checking for verification. If there were proof why can't anyone point to it? Medina had shown great ability never finishing worse than second. He got lucky too because Essential Quality and Rock Your World would have given him all he could handle but both were knocked out of contention by Highly Motivated in the first few jumps out of the gate. EQ also ran wide the whole way costing him many lengths. Trakus measures the distance each horse runs and it would show that EQ ran the farthest and still was barely beaten. To be fairer, horse racing should be on a long straightaway but in longer races that would take up too much real estate and people in the stands would be unable to see the horses in the distance. So, for our convenience, we force some to have to run a lot further than others.

He's telling you that the horse got lucky and is not a great horse. Got the lead, relaxed, and all the other close horses finished in the top 5. This is just a run of the mill race with race flow exactly what you would expect if it was anything other than the Kentucky Derby. The "beating" never draws blood as they hit with the flat part of the whip. It stings for sure but horses in herds naturally will get nipped in the flanks by their more dominant companions when they sense danger. It is something they usually respond to with more speed. Some horses don't and the trainers will tell the jockey not to use the whip when they suspect that that is the case. Almost all jockeys hit a lot in the USA but in some other countries it is restricted to only a certain limited number of hits. Medina did not run his heart out and was apparently in good spirits after the race. Race horses have been picked for many generations not just for their ability but for their desire to run. Those which don't have it are not usually used for breeding the next generation of speedy marvels.
