Man! Bob was a great cat! Incredible player! I got to take a couple of lessons with him during this period. He was so nice, supportive, a great teacher; super humble! We lost him way too early! Check him out on that live record in Europe, think it's 1st set on Bolivia, w/Cedar. And some of the Mike Stern records he was on; he sounded amazing on those. Heard him playing that music live as well. So much fire in his playing! Thanks for posting Bret!

It makes me happy to hear that he recommends Bela Bartok! So interesting! It also breaks my heart to know that he is no longer among us in this physical dimension. I “discovered” Bob while listening to Mike Stern (have seen him playing in Sweden a few times) and since then, I just can’t stop!!! He is one of the best of the best! 🌹

Bob Berg did an amazing and breath taking solo on a live album once with this italian composer called Pino Daniele . The name of this song is called " vivo come te " it was live . The saxphone solo that he did was just brilliant and jaw dropping . Anyway I'm to saddend by the loss of this great artist , can't put it in words . I hope he' s surrounded by an army of angels . Harold Danko told me to learn Microkosmos in all 12, and I did, as far as my abilities permitted. I had read Miles autobiography and he mentions listening to Sinatra for his phrasing, but get this, when I was at College, I happened upon an old "Dictionary of Musical Terms" and under Rubato it stated: "We don't really have a clear idea of what Rubato is in this day and age. Nothing compared to what the Castrati did. The Closest Modern-Day Equivalent would be Frank Sinatra".

Swingin' Affair represents some of Sinatra and Nelson Riddle's best work. The first two beats on Riddle's arrangement on the opening of Night and Day are two unaccompanied timpani beats! Great arrangement along with Sinatra's handling of Night and Day.

I'll take note of his list...Bob Berg was a hell of a saxophone player, one of the best ever - check out his work w/ Miles Davis 1984 and 1985 bands on the extraordinary 10 DVD boxset 'The Complete Live at Montreaux'. He's also amazing on Cedar Walton's Eastern Rebellion 2 (1977) - a must have CD.

That Coltrane record he was talking paramount. On all those early to mid sixties Trane records all the cats were blazing on LSD. That's what Bob was referring to there.

Lively analysis of Bartok from Bob, Bret. (My favourite Bartok composition is Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta; ICY. The mood evoked by THAT is for me most closely matched in JAZZ by Dave Holland's piece Shadow Dance as played live and recorded by the Parallel Realities quartet of 1990:. Both Herbie and Pat Metheny play like extraterrestrials. Reminds me of the moment right at the beginning of Kubrick's 2001 during which the ape-man experiences a sudden flash of insight into the possibility of the BEGINNING OF TECHNOLOGY!! It's great also that Bob references some Coltrane and Blakey stuff that I've never previously heard, and wouldije to find the time to listen to. Many thanks as always!! 👍👍👍🌞🌞🌞😎😎😎

Everything Bob said here is en pointe. Philly Joe is the man when it comes to drums. Sinatra and Nelson Riddle are the perfect team. Cookin is cookin! Jazz Video Guy Hi Brett, if you have any more Bob Berg or Joe Henderson hidden gems please share! They are my favourite tenor players along with Sonny and Trane of course. I met Bob once just before he passsd. He was touring Brisbane, Australia in a fusion band with Dennis Chambers and Gary Willis. He was so down to earth and I wasnt aware of most of the incredible career he had had. I wish I had asked him more important questions but even so he was very generous. He was in his set break and was considerate enough to give me some of his time. He was a very cool guy and awesome tenorist! Much respect
