Ohtani is obviously huge in Japan, but he is also big in Taiwan and Korea. The Dodgers brand is much bigger in Asia than the Yankees bc they were the first to pave the way for Asian plyrs in Jpn, Korea, and Taiwan (Hideo Nomo, Chan Ho Park, CF Chen, HC Kuo, etc). The impact in Asia by pairing Ohtani with the Dodgers is really understated ... it is enormous.

murakami was the first, but came as essentially a player on loan, only played two seasons, and did not leave much of an impact on the majors. the Dodgers history with pathbreaking Asian players was and is built on industry leading and pioneering efforts in international scouting in Asia. I think about how O'Malley financed the first purpose built baseball stadium in mainland China to promote the game (and the dodger brand) in China - it's an organization that has gone above and beyond in this regard

Good point. I don't concern myself with the marketing as much as the athletic performance, but I'm happy that Ohtani has such a huge fan base in those Asian countries. He deserves it, and I know that it brings pride to many people outside the US.

You guys have been knocking it out the park lately. FT is a great resource for MLB news and Bob Costas is my all time favorite baseball guy. I remember when I was a kid ( I’m almost 70) there was day time baseball. Although you only had access to one game a week. It was an event! During the World Series a lot of us had pocket radios that we would bring to school with an earpiece to listen to the games. Sitting in the BarberShop watching the game and listening to the old guys talk about players from their youth was awesome. I still kind of look at the games as that same kid. I’m just more informed thanks to great show like FT.

I always liked listening to Costas. He's not as flashy or emotional as some other announcers, but I love how analytical he is. Very thorough in explaining things, even to casual fans. It's like he doesn't miss a beat when explaining what's going on so fans can really get a good analysis of the game.

The Dodgers' divisional dominance and the Yankees' big contracts haven't increased the popularity of the baseball. It only helps most of the sports media (not baseball specific ones) in that they don't think they have to cover the rest of the league. Great interview. Bob is a treasure.

Bob Costas is one of the best in the business but I have to disagree about the bias when calling games. My complaint isn't that they favor the other team necessarily. It's that they tend to do a narrative driven broadcast. Whichever team is winning is unstoppable they are so good it was inevitable every hitter is an all-star every pitcher is Nolan ryan born again etc. Honestly it's annoying when it the other team and annoying when it's my team. I prefer local announcers because the bias is built in I guess.... I don't know if that last part makes sense. Am I the only one that has this issue with national broadcasts?

Well, You have a very very good point.I like it. The only issue is Bonds was on a level of hitting that no other hitter in baseball has ever come close to in history.Steriods or not. The guy also stole 500 bases. The pitching is an incredible plus that Ohtani brings to the table.When Ohtani plays 15 years at this level I would say he’s the best. But until the Bonds is the man,

At least, all the baseball teams should have the same tv contract. As far as contract amounts are concerned, it has made it impossible for me to attend games. I am Cardinal Nation, i bought season tickets the year McGwire broke the record. Now i can't afford tickets and $12 beers, so i have a problem with how its going.

Revenue sharing!!!!!!! No way. I was looking at all the replies of Tampa Bay Rays fans saying they're out of $182 million with the Wander Franco controversy. Isn't that previously the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Red Sox money that the cheapskate Rays decided to give away. BTW, I'm a lifetime lifelong Yankee fan born in 1959. I'm a NYC native but have lived in Miami, Florida since 2003. The Marlins got a new ballpark but it's still nearly empty at home games. I still go to Yankee Stadium. 😊

No I didn’t. 90% of all players were trying stuff. Pitchers and Hitters were all doing it. In fact most were doing it for many years and long before it became illegal. Football did it to. At the time nobody cared.Pitchers were doing it more for faster recovery time than strength increases. Just part of an era that has moved on. Every Era of baseball has something that we can finger point. Is what it is.

I like Bonds but if he was also pitching then his HRs would be cut in half (70 hr to 35 hr), or maybe cut down triple if was'nt using steroids (70 hr to 15 hr) he did had the speed before steriods so maybe Bonds stolen bases would've gone up but certainly the home runs would've been in the 30's.

Legend? Yes. Knowledgeable? Yes. Self-righteous bias? Yes. What the hell is the point of having all these teams in a league if the same 4-5 get all the praise and exposure? The Jays can win the next 10 world series and they'd still not be best for baseball because of outdated mentalities.

I have huge respect for Barry Bonds as a hitter and strongly believe he should be in the Hall of Fame, but no Babe Ruth is still the greatest hitter ever. Why? I think people lose sight that both Ruth and Bonds were totally different. Bonds was on steroids, sometimes he was muscular and in very good shape most of his career, even when he was skinny. Ruth on the other hand, keep in mind, he always drank and smoked during seasons. Frankly in some of the Babe’s old footages, he was always overweight, never muscular, sometimes was even fat. I’m not knocking the Babe, I’m trying to point out that considering how out of shape he was, it’s amazing the numbers he put up. Think about it, on how much better Ruth would’ve been had he not smoke and drank so much or had the fitness regime that today’s athlete or Bonds from the 1990’s had. I could argue that Ruth would’ve had 80 home run seasons, if he had bothered so stay in shape at all.

@@seanmiles6991 ehh idk about 80 hr seasons. I think Babe Ruth today would be elite don’t get me wrong. A consistent 30-40 hr 100+ rbis on .300 hitting. The argument against him puts up those video game numbers you’re saying is 1) pitching now is way better 2) coaching and managerial styles wouldn’t allow it. Why give babe another homer when you could walk him?
@seanmiles6991
@seanmiles6991 10 ай бұрын
@@805fillmore no you totally misunderstood my comment, of course I know Ruth wouldn’t get to 80 HRS a season now. What I was saying is had Ruth being in shape, had a consistent workout regimen, not didn’t smoke and drank himself to oblivion, he would put 80 HRS in the era he played in. Instead of the 60 bombs he hit a season in the 1920’s, he could’ve hit 80, probably as few as 70. The reason why I believe he could’ve gotten that many in his era, yes of course pitching overall was worse and more importantly Ruth knew no matter how bad that starter was or how poorly he pitched, that guy was throwing a CG, which was extremely favorable to Ruth if he owned that guy on the mound.
