In the early mornin' rain With a dollar in my hand And an achin' in my heart And my pockets full of sand I'm a long way from home And I missed my loved one so In the early mornin' rain, mm With nowhere to go Out on runway number nine Big 707 set to go I'm stuck here on the ground Where the cold winds blow The liquor tasted good And the women all were fast There she goes my friend She's a rollin' down at last Here the mighty engine's roar See the silver bird on high She's away in westward bound Far above the clouds she'll fly Where the mornin' rain don't fall And the sun always shines She'll be flyin' over my home In about three hours time This old airports got me down It's no earthly good to me 'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground Cold and drunk as I might be You can't hop a jet plane Like you can a freight train So I best be on my way In the early mornin' rain

Gordons is by far the best. And Dylan absolutely admired Lightfoot Openly and with a certain amount of awe. His favorite singer/songwriter. He also covers Shadows, also by Lightfoot and considers that song to be his all t6ime favorite. Inf concert he's dedicated his version of Dark as A Dungeon to Gordon on numerous occasions. It's a song Lightfoot used to cover back in his early days.

@@belinda35_77 Elvis take on this widely covered song lacks the ache, loneliness, and regret found in the original, as sung by it's genius composer Gordon Lightfoot. I don't believe Elvis experienced what Gordon wrote about. It's [perhaps the change in key to a higher lighter more gentle tone that does that. But, to each his own. This song has been recorded by over 200 artists for good treason. Gordon , when asked which were his favorite versions, often mentioned Elvis rendition as one of his favorites as well as expressing awe Elvis loved Lightfoot's songs, compositions, lyrics and voice.
