Lyrics:
I got this graveyard woman, you know she keeps my kids
But my soulful mama, you know she keeps me hid
She's a junkyard angel and she always gives me bread
Well, if I go down dyin', you know she's bound to put a blanket on my bed
Well, when the pipeline gets broken and I'm lost on the river bridge
I'm all cracked up on the highway and in the water's edge
And then she comes down a thruway, ready to sew me up with a thread
Well, if I go down dyin', you know she's bound to put a blanket on my bed
Well, she don't make me nervous, she don't talk too much
She walks like Bo Diddley and she don't need no crutch
She keeps this four-ten all loaded with lead
Well, if I go down dyin', you know she's bound to put a blanket on my bed, c'mon
Well, you know I need a steam shovel, mama, to keep away the dead
I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
She brings me everything and more, and just like I said
Well, if I go down dyin', you know she's bound to put a blanket on my bed

This is my all time favorite Dylan song. First heard it in the late 80s when I got the album on pre-recorded cassette. I was listening to this when a cop pulled me over for going 65 in a 45. He told me, "In addition to the ticket for 20 over, I could give you another one for reckless driving. I'm not going to." So be careful when listening. This song has power.

So long ago! I had the original album with the original lyric.. "she comes runnin' down the through-way with her dynamite and a crane" And the 410 she had, "she keeps a 410, loaded, underneath her bed" Later releases had these adapted lyrics. I don't know what. I guess Bob decided he liked em better. Or maybe the original tapes got dicked or something. Dunno. But whenever I hear the tune I remember the original lyrics that I played over and over and over when I was a youth.

"If I go down dying she'll / Put a blanket on my bed" comes from an old English folk metaphor. To "make someone's bed" meant to lay out their winding sheet. So he's reaching way back very accurately, here.

Thomas Hofheinz thank you! And “Haul on The Bowline” from song “Dylan’s 115 Dream” is a title for an old sea song, Irish I believe, and he uses that phrase on Album Bring it all back home. It’s tremendous when Dylan deploys language like this.

I know Dylan recorded Sleepy John Estes "Milk cow blues" early on, but isn't Buick 6 a reworking of that early song? Ry Cooder did a great version on "Boomer's Story."
