Lyrics:
Oh all the money that in my whole life I did spend
Be it mine right or wrongfully
I let it slip gladly to my friends
To tie up the time most forcefully
But the bottles are done
We’ve killed each one
And the table’s full and overflowed
And the corner sign
Says it’s closin' time
So I’ll bid farewell and be down the road

Incredible how such a young man with a voice many denied was singing could keep on keeping on. He made our private world's public yet succeeded in keeping his private world away from the public. He possessed a wisdom and an ability to understand what was around him that ppl of seventy at the time could not see. I'm tipsy now on v v v cheap but ok cider so hope am making some sorta sense. I've loved him since I was sweet sixteen

Dylan based this song on the centuries old Scottish, later Irish, "The Parting Glass", a version of which he learned from the Clancy Brothers, thus continuing the folk process.

Actually Irish musicians even now still sing the "Parting Glass" instead of "Auld Lang Syne"

One of my favourite mondegreen (hearing different words) is in this song "And all the battles are done, we've killed each one" but he says bottles not battles, I think it's really powerful with the word battles.

Thanks for this comment. I've been looking for the technical word for hearing different words in a song. I would have to say my favourite mondegreen is probably from American Pie, but a huge amount of my experience with the phenomenon is from Dylan

I was looking for early Dylan about 15 years ago and ordered this cd for the boots of Spanish leather version and couldn't have picked a better choice for a song list to memorize. This song however, has some of the hardest right hand strumming patterns I've ever tried to learn. I'm usually a finger picker and caught onto his Travis picking pattern early but every song he strums on isn't a set measure with a disciplined pattern. He actually plays it differently almost every time and that's what makes it amazing and genuine for me.

Made Frank Sinatra tear up while singing this to Mr.Frank ( as Bob addressed him afterwards) on Frank’s 80th birthday celebration. A grand performance and makes this album cut pedestrian compared to the live version for Frank.

Been asleep for much of the past 24 hours - due to combination of allergy pills for my feet and 🍺 cider….. kept falling in and out of dreams. Thinking here of all the money I spent. Not quite like George Best or Rod Stewart who were both hilarious on the subject. All I’ve earned has been spent mainly on CDs; particularly Dylan, going to gigs, presents for my friends, rent to bastard landlords, removal and storage costs, setting up home costs which as soon as done removal costs again, good mattresses, occasional nice jewellery for myself, glasses, travel as much as possible, keeping a car on the road, good food, beer and now cider cos of wheat issue, my mum and dad - flowers and books for her and anything he needed in last few years, banking costs, heat oh of course heat, more than food I need heat.

@@leeglasse5443 dylan was a student before he became a master, and he understood well the standards of commercial success and obscure talent barely marketed. he and a few others did such a fine job copying songs he liked that alleged plagiarism took a back seat to enjoyment and in many cases agreement. so then lee, we cant find any immediate fault with your outburst.

Josie loved this album. When we were together in the late 1980s we had a sweet spiritual space. Started going to a local Buddhist centre last year. There was a talk by a good speaker, people came from other local Kadampa centres. After the talk, I was sure I saw Josie, and it was her. Shame she didn't recognise me! But non-attachment was the theme of the talk, and I got attached to her like no-one else, and I have somewhat turned into Homer Simpson since we were together, so that was appropriate.

And once she caught up, she was asking after my daughter, and remembered her name. I didn't have a daughter when we split up, so she'd managed to keep well-informed about me. I'm really glad I saw her again, and this song always reminds me of her.
