Planet Waves definitely underrated probably due to the 2 or 3 studio albums that followed it so maybe it got lost in the shuffle. Planet Waves one of my favorites also!

I still think it's a travesty that Before the Flood wasn't captured on Film. It was a staple on my turntable when it came out in 1974, when friends still visited friends, smoked a joint & enjoyed the great music in treasured collections, bought via hard earned money. Man, those were truly great times. ❤🎉😊

Bob Dylan and the Band were made for each other. The Band brought out the best in Dylan and he the best in them. I’m all in with this. Side note: The Jerry Garcia Band always did a great cover of Tough Mama. Thanks for sharing your photos from the Oakland show. Great work! Made my day.

Got to be a security guard at the Montreal concert. Bill Graham coached us and I got to be in front of Dylan. I remember looking at the band the entire show instead of the audience which I was supposed to be watching. They sounded great and I was mesmerized. Dylan at one point breaks a string and looked pissed off. I thought c'mon man you just broke a string whats the big deal? But years later when I got to play in bands live in front of an audience I got it! Mine were in the hundreds so imagine in front of 30,000! Bill Graham was a character and we gave him a hard time before the show and he took it like a kink and with a great sense of humour. Instantly likeable guy. Stupid me of course never thought of bringing a camera! I got to see many legends of the Blues up close in small clubs. Nothing like it. It was a great era for music and artists that would never be again. I was and still 'am a lucky guy!

What a shame The Band's sets aren't included. Imagine if the box set had nothing but the full multitrack recorded shows? It probably would have been about the same number of CD's. But, they would have sold a lot more sets. I'm still interested, though. A very good price for so many discs.

I'm a huge Dylan fan too Mazzy. Same with the Band. Seen them both early of course. Actually I seen the Band when they were called The Hawks. Yeah I'm that old. LOL..... When I ran a gig with Jerry Jeff Walker in the mid 70s Garth Hudson, Rick Danko and Ronnie Hawkins showed up with other celebs in the suite I had for the band to say high to Jerry and talk over old times. Ian and Sylvia and Gordy Lightfoot were there too. Garth was quiet, Ronnie loud and gregarious and Ricky the life of the party. It took me a long time to move that party downstairs to the club and waiting patrons... I've fond memories of that night....

Thanks for the great preview and breaking this news (at least for me). 27 shows is a lot to digest. A lot of sameness, but from tapes and boots I've heard over the years, there was a fair difference between the earliest shows and the last ones. I think though, Bob's voice and approach to the songs (so aggressive) remained the same throughout. Not sure if I'll spring for this one. Would like to just cherry pick the one-offs and seldom performed cuts onto a nice "homemade" set. You do a great job, as always Mazzy. Peace out from ver here.

It was good to see such an extensive release of this your and in the UK at £91 for a 27 disc set a bargain. I first saw Dylan at the Blackbushe Picnic in 1978 so we are heading for that era. That was a superb experience. I went on my own while I was still at school and it terrified my parents! It was the closest I ever came to something like Woodstock in terms of the experience and certainly the largest number of human beings I have every seen in one place. The cover of Before The Flood, that you showed echoed a moment that I will always remember from that gig. It had got dark and Bob launched into Forever Young and suddenly it appeared that the whole field of hundreds of thousands people were waving lighters aloft. Amazing! There was a lot of walking to and from the aerodrome and transport systems collapsed, but was it a problem? Not at all. In spite of my tender years and flying solo I felt completely safe amongst the crowd there and I did eventually find my way home much to the relief of my parents! It was good to see that they chose Forever Young as the lead off publicity track for this set. It kicked off a lot of memories.

As with other similar Dylan’s releases, I see a sampler with 20 tracks will be available for streaming. It does not look like ATMOS mix will be available. The coordinated releases of "Springtime in New York" were bliss. The '80s was not my favorite era for Dylan's recorded work, but Columbia did it for the Bootleg Series Vol. 16 so I had to have it. What was brilliant about the Third Man Records part in the release is that their 4 LPs had *zero* overlapping tracks. If you had the Columbia set and the TMR set, you'd have as many as 99 tracks: 57 on the 5xCD deluxe Bootleg Series Vol. 16 (there was only a 2xLP vinyl version, so I bought the CD set), and 42 more on the 4xLP Vault #58. This time around, I don't think they coordinated in the same fashion, but I'd be delighted to find that they have. From what I understand so far, if one buys the CD set, all of what Third Man is offering will be included, with the chief difference being the media format and separate presentations. (TMR does great work on their Vault editions' design and contents, well worth the $75.) I think I'll resubscribe to the Vault Series for this, because I'm like you, sir, a Dylan completist - as close to one as is possible within my means, that is. I'm already picking things to sell to afford both sets. I'm all in on owning this tour, like the 1966 and Rolling Thunder sets you showed. I am gearing up to see the man for the 20th time later this summer. It's a privilege to be a fan. Thanks for your content, especially the Dylan mentions when titles come up.
@myquealer
@myquealer 14 күн бұрын
Cancelling your Third Man Vault subscription after a single shipment is no problem. I've done it for the previous Dylan and Syd Barrett boxes, and just resubscribed to get this Dylan set. A Vault subscription also gets you a discount on other Third Man purchases and access to exclusive releases just for Vault subscribers (usually color variants of wider releases).

The Philadelphia concert was sold out so I put on a white shirt and tie, slung a 35 mm camera around my neck and went to the Spectrum. About one hour before the show, I walked through the main door and past the employees just like I owned the place, right into the inner concert area. I was surprised and hadn't planned what to do next. A voice came from the stage, " Hey, what are you doin' in here?" I remember pressing my ear against a crack of an outer door barely hearing Bob and the Band. But now 50 years later .... Voila!

I don't even like what I've heard of Before the Flood, all those coarse, unsubtle performances. Budokan set was great! And Rolling Thunder, too, although I bought it and listened to each CD once... But Iike Neil Young, I'm getting old. Will I live long enough to listen to all 27 + 36 CDs of essentially repeated material, not even good in the case of '74? 27 2 hour shows. It's doable before I croak, I suppose. Probably better for younger folks who have more time to listen.

Does Before the Flood mean that Dylan is referring to the Younger Dryas period that occurred around 12,000 years ago? 😂

I went to the Third Man site to check out the LP version, and I now have a question: Does signing up for a $75 Vault quarterly subscription result in you automatically receiving this 3-LP release, without paying separately for the LP package? Back in '74 I sent in a request for tickets to the Oakland, CA show, but wasn't one of the lucky ones (the tickets were picked in a raffle-style manner). Then I moved away from the Bay area just before The Last Waltz was announced. Damn, twice unlucky! I did see The Band at The Berkeley Community Theater during the tour for the brown album, though. Best live band I've ever seen and heard, and that includes The Beatles at The Cow Palace in '65. When Levon Helm appeared at Book Soup on Sunset Blvd. (directly across the street from Tower Records) for a book release signing event, Ringo showed up to get his copy signed. He took cuts in line, but nobody complained. ;-) Planet Waves is one of my favorite albums, I love it to death. I like it the same way I like Elvis Costello's King Of America. They kinda remind me of one another. And Before The Flood is probably my second favorite Rock 'n' Roll album (first is The Band's Rock Of Ages, of course).

@@bdp24x14 yes. The $75 covers the album. It wlil automatically renew each quarter so cancel right after you receive it unless you want each quarters release.

Planet Waves! Is this the album that was played at a gathering with Joni Mitchell where the album was played AFTER Jonis' Court And Spark was played, where Dylan pretends to go to sleep while Jonis' album is being played. Complete silence after Court and Spark is played compared to the fawning Dylan gets with Planet Waves? Oh dear......

Cool box, but too bad they didn't offer a "Before The Flood - Expanded Edition" type vinyl release. Would've made a nice 5-LP box set, not limited to some subscription service. Seems a missed opportunity.

I bought both the 1966 and 1975 box set. There are a few caveats for people who haven't bought either one. The 1966 tour has 2 or 3 poor audience recordings which the record company decided to release to be complete (as put it, "historical value"). I tried to listen to them and they are bad. I stopped after the 1st song (probably should listen to them eventually). The European leg is excellent, though songs are truncated because of either the recording engineer messed up or there was something wrong with the original recording tape. Still overall, I love it. The 1975 set is okay, but there 1 or 2 CDs that are rehearsals. Huh? Whey would I care to hear rehearsals? Plus I read some songs were edited out because Roger McGuinn sang, so they wanted to include only songs Bob Dylan sang. Was disappointed about that because they weren't totally complete shows. Hopefully, this new box set is complete without any omitted songs. I understand things happen during a concert which is beyond the performer's or recording engineer's control. Also the tapes do get damaged or deteriorate over time.

This is ridiculous. I'm all in (almost) on Dylan, but who has the time to listen to 27 CDs, most of them repeating roughly the same set. How many times have you listened all through the whole '66 set? Even once? I'm not going to pay to help Columbia protect their copyright, or Third Man records for the privilege of purchasing their vinyl. And they wonder why physical music sales are plummeting.... Stuart
