I went with a friend and his father to a new car dealer in 1958 or so. There in the showroom was one of these black with stainless roof. I thought it was the most beautiful car I ever saw. My eyes popped, and my mouth fell open. In my minds memory I can see it still today. Jack Wrather, of Wrather Broadcasting owned one too. You can google him if you don't know who he was.

I grew up in a town of 1200 people in rural Indiana. I remember as a 13 year old boy discovering a light Rose colored Eldorado with a very unusual roof sitting outside the local Doctor's office. Turns out he had purchased it. I finally caught him driving it through town one day and flagged him down. He explained the Stainless Steel roof to me and also was kind enough to give me a tour of the car. He was VERY proud of it, understandably, I envied him for years.

Pretty amazing that Bob Hope kept the car so long which reflects how Cadillacs of this era, especially this landmark model, were built to last and not to a price (as GM well knew when the coffers dipped each time one was made.) I thought Bob was a Chrysler guy because of the sponsorship, but maybe just publicly! I wonder if he put Texaco gasoline in it, or would sneak into Standard / Chevron stations to fill up?

When I was kid we had a black 57 Coupe DeVille. So we're driving it out in the desert(Antelope Valley) and passing by and old alfalfa farm way out east of Lancaster, we see the unmistakable bullet bumper poking out of a dilapidated out building, garage. Turned out to be mint green 58 Sedan DeVille. Picked it up for $200 bucks. Had to tear it down to get all the blow sand out of the motor, refreshed the rings and gave it a valve job and polished it up. Loved those cars.

In the late 60”s I got to see one of Bob Hope’s Chrysler Le Baron. Hop’s TV show at the time was sponsored my Chrysler. The one I saw was one of only three that were built. The one I saw at a Dodge dealership in Phoenix. From what I was told, two of the three belonged to Hope. Hope had already got the new year models and what I saw were from the previous year. One was what today we name a daily driver. The other was a slightly stretched limo. The one I saw was the daily driver. Two Chrysler employees toured with the car. My mom was an employee of the dealer and she got me into the back lot before it was out front for display. I had to keep my distance as I watched the Chrysler employees polish the body. I was a 17 year old teen and listened intensely to the conversation one of the Dodge dealer’s managers had with the Chrysler employees. They described all the gizmos, gadgets and tech talk of everything from the engine to suspension. They even went into details about the new no sweat breathable Naugahyde seat covers and real leather trim. Being a naive teenager I was somewhat shocked hearing an adult respond to a salesman’s question. He asked what doesn’t the contraction do. One of the Chrysler tech guys quickly responded “it won’t wipe your ass or Jack you off but we’re working on it”. The tech then immediately apologized not realizing there was a lady in the crowd. I finally got a chance to ask a question. I asked why the car didn’t have the 426 Hemi engine. The tech guy immediately responded with “ its not a hot rod it’s a celebrity vehicle. The car was later moved out front for display with a very hot looking model. I wasn’t there but was told the model was like an encyclopedia of Chrysler knowledge and helped the dealer sell some new cars.

The American automotive industry has been bludgeoned on multiple sides and thrown into a raging torrent of regulations and costs that foreign manufacturers have never experienced. And even when GM had the opportunity to shirk some of the crap thrown on it, the company was stolen by the government, from its true investors, and handed to the very folks who've damaged it the most, the UAW. Perhaps the saddest thing is observing them buying into the electric vehicle fraud pushed by the same government that's enabled its tormentors. As a former teamster who's witnessed the corruption, laziness, malfeasance among union workers, I've been very tempted to get involved in a union and build it into something worth a damn, that adds real value to everything its members touch. I was at an indoor/outdoor restaurant on Lake Travis in Austin and spotted a mint-condition 1957 Broughham. I spoke with the owner, who noted my interest, and gave me full run of the car. He had all the original amenities in both the rear armrest and glovebox and everything worked, including the air suspension. I was delighted to see what someone was paying the equivalent of about $200,000.00 for in 1957.

This was the heyday of the American automobile ! Detroit proved it knew how to spell the word "quality". The "toys" still work after more than 60 years ! Three deuces spelled gas yardage, but Hi Test was ~ 30 cents a gallon. Thanks!

Ok...this car came with a lot of "vanities" in the glove box as well as the rear arm rest. The kleenex dispenser was built into the center of the glove box door. To the right was a ladies "compact" which had a place for cake powder with puff, lip stick holder, also a change holder for the parking meter, it was covered in the same color leather as the interior with a chrome Cadillac "V" on the back, fold out full width metal "mirror" which doubled as a holder for the six stainless steel magnetized drinking cups in their own plastic holder, a plastic box for a cigarette pack to be put in for freshness. In the rear arm rest, a chrome push button opened the top of the arm rest upward to reveal "compartments" containing an ounce of Arpege' perfume, plunger style atomizer, a beveled mirror with matching leather back, an "Eldorado Brougham" note pad with sterling Cross pencil. Also in the glove compartment is a two push button chrome box to fully open/close trunk automatically.

Something to remember is that the moment you restore this car, it’s no longer the car that Bob Hope owned. It just becomes another restored car. It loses it’s history if it’s renovated. Bob hope looked on THAT paintwork & his ass sat on those seats. Leave it as it is.

The model lasted four years, but the body style changed, as did many of the features, as well as the coach builder. Cadillac had no intention of making money on these cars: they wanted the long-used "Standard of the World" to ring true. What's most amazing about the '57 and '58? Their proportions and stance are still current for a sedan. Beautiful car.

The Eldorado Brougham wasn't built for only two years. That body style yes, but, the EB was restyled for 59, and 60, and, even rarer, with 99, and 101 produced respectively.
