I’ve always loved listening to Bob on the radio call, often choosing it over watching on television. However, my appreciation for him as a good man came during the Dooley years. I went online on a Sunday afternoon to watch the newly posted episode of the coach’s show. As soon as the video started I realized that the production team had left an unedited pre-show conversation between Bob and Coach Dooley on the upload. It wasn’t a bad conversation, but it was after another Volunteer loss and Dooley was clearly frustrated and unguarded in his comments. In that peek behind the curtain I saw Bob engage with Dooley in a way that acknowledged the disappointment but was immensely encouraging. Listening to Bob, Dooley’s countenance lightened and his spirits lifted as they prepared for the show to actually start. It was remarkable! I knew that the footage wasn’t intended for the public so I immediately paused the episode and called every phone number I could find online for the Vol Network, trying to alert someone that it was there. I wasn’t able to actually speak to anyone but I somehow navigated my way to Bob’s voicemail where I told him about the unedited footage. I hung up having to just be ok knowing that I tried to help but not expecting to hear anything back. A few days later I was sitting in a graduate class lecture when I got a call from a random number and I had to let it go to voicemail. Sure enough, it was Bob! He left the most kind and sincere message, assuring me that the unintended footage had been taken down and thanking me for my help. Bob, I wish I could have spoken to you in person that day, but just the fact that you would take the time to reach out meant the world to me. As a good man striving for excellence you became not just the Voice of the Vols but the steady heartbeat of Vol Nation. I will miss you on the airwaves but I’m joyful for you in your decision to retire and have more time with your family! Thank you and GB🍊!!!

Deciding when to retire is one of the most significant decisions any of us will face in our lifetime. Usually, retirement represents the closing of one of the most important phases of our lives, while it also represents the beginning of something new. Stepping away from something that you care deeply about is scary. You’ll always have doubt about your decision. But once you take that step it becomes easier day by day to separate yourself from your work. As the work routine fades away, new and exciting things fill in your time each day. Maybe it is a round of golf, or some time at your favorite stream trying to catch some fish, or a hobby that you are passionate about. Most likely retirement will include more quality time with your family and friends. Bob Kesling is a Tennessee Volunteers broadcast legend. His contribution to the success of the University of Tennessee Athletics program is unmeasurable. Through the rough times in Tennessee sports and through the celebration of championships, Bob Kesling has been the voice of the Vokunteers. His talent and leadership in the broadcast booth will be missed by Tennessee Athletics fans everywhere. Congratulations to Bob Kesling for having the courage to walkway and enter retirement on his own terms. As Bob enters the legend of being a true Vol For Life (VFL) I say thank you and “GO BIG ORANGE!”

Bob- thank you for serving the Vols and Volnation for so many years. You have done a great job! I'll miss your signature "into the Checkerboard" phrase when we score a touchdown. Your passion for the work and continued professionalism -- following in John Ward's footsteps -- honor all of us Vol fans. We are very fortunate to have had you share your life with us for these many years.

Congratulations to Mr. Kesling on his excellent career as Voice of the Vols and the Vol network. That last story about his first lunch with Dickey was funny. I still listen to the Vol broadcasts of football and basketball games somewhat regularly because there is something special about radio, because it's a nice break from the television broadcasts (the networks now basically own major-college sports, alas) and because it's the UT broadcast. (The only thing that might need a rethink related to Vol Network football broadcasts is the postgame show, which amounts to 30+ minutes or so of commercials plus football scores from the day that everybody has already seen and heard multiple times before the coach finally comes on with a few comments.) Kesling used to get some stick from the nitwits on Volnation---when they weren't complaining endlessly about a holding penalty that /wasn't/ called on the opponent---but the carping has since subsided, mostly, and we Vol fans can all appreciate what a tremendous asset Bob has been the UT sports broadcasts, the Vol network, the SEC and the University of Tennessee. We'll miss his voice and his professionalism. I hope he enjoys his retirement.

Bob received way too much flack for not being John Ward. He had huge shoes to fill and I personally think he did an admirable job. No one's perfect, but he gave his all for the Vols and during a period when it wasn't always easy to cover the teams he was covering. He loves the university and I think it's time we show him that love back. Happy retirement Bob Kesling. Hope we can bring you a ring like we did John.
