If you want to know how good a drummer is... ask them to play reggae... sounds simple on the ear... but it's far from simple to get it right...Carlie was a master because he lived and breathed it... day in day out... his control over the rhythm is second nature to him... His bouncing bass drum accents on this side and the other side of the one drop are his trademark along with the crosstick... Beautiful...if you want to play reggae you cannot get a better teacher... live up!🙏

Agree full force. Even reggae guitar, bass, keys etc. Sound simple on the surface but it’s a complicated rhythm that, if you can’t feel it, you cannot play it

@@flynncremin6347 correct... it's not what you play... it's what you don't play 👊🏻

The late Carton " CARLY" Barrett is the greatest reggae heartbeat ever. EVER. SLY DUNBAR is next in line at runner up with Steve " GRIZZLY" NESBITT

The great Carlton Barrett is probably singing the song internally and then plays in between the vocal lines (snare and bass drum alternating) at some points and then along with the vocal lines at other points (like on, diggeth a pit; fall in it). So the phrasing and rhythmic feel of the lyrics drives the song.

Uniquely Carlton groove right there. Love his drum rolls and how he times it perfectly, accentuated by the high tuned snare that is his trademark sound. And his kick bass too. Awesome and he is sorely missed.

SOME ONE THAT HAS STUDIED CARLTON BARRETT, PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT HE'S DOING! I'VE LISTENED TO HIM THROUGH OUT MY LIFE, BUT I'VE NEVER STUDIED HIM. I WOULD HAVE TO WRITE IT DOWN AND THEN LOOK AT IT IN ORDER TO SEE WHATS GOING ON. THE RIGHT SPIRIT, THE RIGHT FEEL, THE DYNAMICS, TEMPO, ETC. THERE IS SOMETHING SUPERNATURAL THERE! CAN YOU GUYS IMAGINE TRYING TO PLAY CARLTON "BY EAR"?... IT WOULD TAKE A WHILE, UNLESS YOU ARE A RAPID LEARNER, WITH AN EXCELLENT MEMORY, AND ARE AN ADVANCED ARTIST, IN OTHER WORDS, SOMEONE-ONE-OTHER-THAN ME! BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS HAVE AN EXTRAORDINARY DISCOGRAPHY AND HISTORY! CARLTON BARRETT, WAS THE RIGHT MAN AT THE RIGHT TIME! THE WAY HE ANCHORED THE BAND WITH FEELING, SPIRIT, RYTHM, AND SOUL IS ♥️ CARLTON BARRETT- "HYPNOTIC", "MYSTICAL", "TRANSCENDENTAL" AND "POSITIVE"!

Yeah. It's understated and simplistic but it's not easy to teach. You can't teach that natural touch. Someone either has it or they don't.
@familytreemusic2 жыл бұрын
Cannot write it down and read it, you have to feel it: it do not need to be the same exact patterns, you have to practice that swing, how he bounces and how his hi-hat locks with his brother's bassline.

There's just so much to say, I don't know where to begin! Carly's style of drumming was as natural to him as Bonham & Rock & Roll. The world already knew in Common Time, the 2 & 4 were the down beats but in One Drop the 3rd is the down beat. It leaves the 1, 2, & 4 "empty." Carly "fills" that emptiness with remarkable cross sticking & bass drumming that not only beautifully compliments the bass, but the whole band. What's so special as well is that his drumming never overwhelmed any other instrument. Stewart Copeland said in an interview that reggae drummers "have the most chops... it's basically just one big drum solo!" It was obvious to ME that he was definitely thinking about Carlton Barrett when he said that. 😆
