I'm grateful for having the opportunity to hear this story Bob. Stories like this, which abbund in the jazz world are, at least for me, an important part of what makes the jazz tradition. What the players went through for their art and what they learned not only as musicians but firstly as human beings which later obviously translated to music never ceases to amaze and humble myself. Yeah, that's pretty much the way I see it. It seems that from this and a couple of other stories I have heard, one involving a band not getting paid and Clifford being appointed to be the one to get the money. It seems when necessary, Clifford could be very forceful and effective. This kind of proves that sweet souls are not necessary weak souls.

@@bobmoverjazzability Hi Bob. We played at the Musicians Exchange. I’m not sure but it may have been with Ira Sullivan. I play bass. Or it could have been with Alice Day. I think it was the 5 things you need to have together on every tune. Melody, bass line, arpeggios, guide tones, 12 keys. I used that in many lessons myself.

I have a musician friend who is a gentle soul here in Boston- one time on a city bus, this one jerk was tearing into the bus driver - my friend got up and said: “if you don’t stop harassing her, you are going to have to deal with my fist “. Gentle souls cannot stand abuse towards others.
