A few years back, my wife and I saw Mr. Newhart perform at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Conn. Besides his amazing comedy, a really nice touch was that there was a band of local musicians onstage, who performed the themes to both classic Newhart series. They opened the show with Lorenzo Music's "The Bob Newhart Show" theme (the Chicago series), and when Mr. Newhart was done with his set, they performed Henry Mancini's theme for "Newhart" (the Vermont series). All in all, it was one of the most enjoyable evenings we've ever spent. I have no problem with over-the-top, in-your-face comedy, but there's something special about a person who can be as subtle and understated as Mr. Newhart was, and yet still slay the sold-out house. He could convey more with a simple facial gesture or shoulder shrug than a lot of people could could in a full-on 10-minute rant. RIP, Mr. Newhart. You were one of the best ever, and I'm so grateful that you left us with such a wealth of wonderful memories.

Bob Newhart. The man was an absolute genius. This skit proves it. One sided convos are hard enough to do, never mind doing multiple ones like he's doing here. The man was so smooth, intelligent, and yet so low-key that sometimes what he says just blows right by you. Marvelous, and proof that you can do humor clean as a whistle.

I saw this routine updated a few years ago. It's pretty timeless though he had updated the Agnew joke to "Oh, you can't get a hold of President Reagan? Well, keep trying Mr. Bush." I remember as a kid watching his Chicago-set show, the episode where Bob Newhart, Peter Bonerz and Bill Daily spent a drunken weekend (Emily was away) trying to say "Moo Goo Gai Pan" into a phone 23 times. That was literally the funniest routine I'd seen ever.

Before my time but loved every second of this. I always enjoyed how much prime time tv got away with back then. In the original "Bob Newhart Show" during the episode where Bob is held hostage in his office, Carol orders food for everyone. Jerry (the dentist) is upset because he has a hot date with two flight attendants but Carol is pleading with him to stay. She offers him some food from a bucket of chicken and Jerry says, "Give me a pair of thighs." As primary school kid, even I laughed out loud at that one. Thank you for reminding us of how lucky we were to have him in our lives.

Bob's one way phone calls were a huge inspiration for me when I had a radio show. My idiot cat George, supposedly produced the show. He didn't have a mic, as there was a big attack on air, when he was cyberdating one of the backup singers for the Jingle Cats and I wouldn't play the tape. From there on out, George was a staple to the show, and I had these one way conversations with him. Good stuff, Bob! You will be missed.

Being a Brit, I found that US humour didn’t travel well across the pond. Way back in the early 1960s my friend bought Bob Newhart records. Although as I said US humour didn’t travel well. Bob’s sketches were the exception. Although extremely funny, they soon became so familiar we could recite them word for word. I still give a titter whenever I hear them and reminisce of those days 60+ years ago. However Newhart had brilliantly controlled timing with his narrative. However this particular sketch is new to me. Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed it. So funny.

What a comedic genius... the KZbin asked me if I wanted to proceed because it had a theme of self-harm. You know back in the day that this aired there was no concern about that because WE ALL FREAKING UNDERSTOOD that it was a show and that this was a bit for comedic effect... we don't need to be coddled and given inane explanations... unless society has really sank to a whole new low.

Never seen this sketch before. Brilliant, as was so many of Bob's sketch routines. We will miss him.

Security guard's 1st stint on the job at the Empire State Building, the day King Kong climbs it. Funny.
