I'm maybe too young so I got to knew Bob's work only through Conan. But the very second I first saw this guy I laughed like never before, immediately knew we're in the presence of legendary comedy mind! So sad to see the legend go.

I know Conan or Andy won't see this, but I want to say it to them anyway. You two have saved my life on more than one occasion. As a young man I went through some really rough times. Times that made me not want to be on earth anymore, if you know what I mean. I would sit up late at night feeling like a complete failure. During those times I started noticing Conan on television. It was the one time a day that I would laugh. As wild as this sounds, your show was that one bright spot that I needed. Your show shined a light on hope for me, something I did not have in my 20s. Now as a 44 year old man, I have an amazing wife and a career making more money than I ever dreamed possible. Not just any career, my dream career. I became a software engineer and had some great luck and opportunities come my way that sent me down the path of success, and eventually my own company. I often think back about those dark times. To think I would have missed out on this amazing thing called life if I hadn't found you by accident one night. Life is strange. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you both.

Bob Newhart Show "from September 16, 1972, to April 1, 1978, with a total of 142 half-hour episodes over six seasons..." So now 52 years. What a delightful program to watch! We'll miss you Bob!

I did not see the show until years after I saw the entire run of "Newhart". I was 7 when "The Bob Newhart Show" ended. The ending of "Newhart" made me look up the OG show. I did not get it until I saw that episode of Conan and bought the box set. Well worth the buy.
@hunglikeahamster32486 ай бұрын
@@bamachineThis is pretty similar to why it's always better to read the book, then see the movie. 😅 The end scene in that last episode of Newhart without that OG point of reference must've made zero sense to you. I watched all of both shows back in the day - I was 10 when The Bob Newhart Show started up. And the end to Newhart more than a decade after the first show had ended was perhaps the most unexpectedly hilarious thing I've ever seen. I've cracked up just thinking about it many times over the years. Couldn't have been more perfect. By the way, as I found out from the obits pouring in last week, that scene was entirely his wife Ginny's idea. She wasn't even in the biz, but what a great match they must've been...
@bamachine6 ай бұрын
@@hunglikeahamster3248 I kind of got the ending of "Newhart" when it first aired because I had heard of his prior show and knew that she played his wife in that show. I just did not 'get to see' the earlier series until after I got the box set that was talked about in that clip from Conan. I reread what I posted before and I can see where it was misleading. It would have had even more impact for me if I had seen the OG series first though. Sorry for the confusing original post.
@hunglikeahamster32486 ай бұрын
@@bamachine Well, it seems like you misunderstood me somehow, cuz that was my only point. I know it would have been far more hilarious for you as well if you'd seen the whole first series, then 10+ years later, saw that spectacular ending. Kinda precluded by not being born early enough for that to have happened though. 😂
@hunglikeahamster32486 ай бұрын
@@bamachine PS: I'm glad it made some sort of sense to you, at least. I doubt the kids these days would even tolerate watching either series, sadly. Nor would they like them anyway. And I really didn't like the second one nearly as much, honestly. It was full of such severely irritating characters like Michael and Steph and even Bob's wife - the only redeeming thing about it was of course Bob himself.

Wow. He was almost 88 when this aired. And I busted out laughing at that "at least it went to a friend" line. One of the greatest things about him - he trusted the intelligence of the audience and didn't dumb it down or make it glaringly obvious for the lowest common denominator viewers like so much crap does these days. Or those days, for that matter.
