Crude comedians being given family friendly shows...why is that a thing? Why has that always been a thing? I don't think it's bad, I just want to know who was the first person to come up with it?

Because back then, there were still only a handful of TV channels from local TV stations that were owned or affiliated with broadcast networks that were and still are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission and comedians had to adapt in order to really make a living.
