This fit a group of college friends and me to various degrees. It didn't help that we are all actual genius' so we could get results in the real world, so there was little punishments for our faults. My best friend of the time was charismatic and manipulative & would arrange people to his entertainment. Also cheated a lot on his GF. Last time I saw him he didn't change. I seem to really draw people in the most when I am a bit of a raging a-hole that also turned his ability on. Even people who don't like it give me information/co-operation I'm looking for. Needless to say I could get a lot done like that. And real life had bosses lecture me that people don't like it - then give me a sizable raise. I wasn't until I left the group that I changed. I really didn't see myself as I was until I saw my old friends again.

I'd highly recommend Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away." It paints a picture of traveling through the midwest that is so relatable to anyone who's traveled across the plains up to the Rockies. (My family did that a lot, so my God does that song paint a picture. But really, all of Bob Seger's music evokes midwest life, the rust belt experience.

I’m a Brit, now living in Australia but I used to travel to the US a lot for work. Over a 10 year period. This song brings back fond memories of rolling into a bar in Boise, Idaho on my own. I put this on the jukebox. Sat at the bar and then proceeded to have the best evening ever chatting to all the locals. One guy in particular I will never forget. Because I committed to saying I wouldn’t. He didn’t have much money and was on the down. But as he left the bar that evening, he turned around and said to me, “even with all that buddy, I’m still the same”.

He had his first hit as the Bob Seger System in the late 60's with "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man." Then the first half of the 70's he recorded just as Bob Seger. Then in 1976 he started going by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. But in the studio Bob would record some of the songs with the Silver Bullet Band and would record some with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section from Alabama. He recorded "Still the Same" and "Hollywood Nights" with the Silver Bullet Band but on the same album he recorded "Old Time Rock N Roll" with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. But then he would tour with the Silver Bullet Band.

You nailed it with your interpretation. Bob Seger once said the song was more or less "inspired" by his father, who was sort of a slick charismatic lovable loser conman charmer, moving from one thing to another. Seger said lines like "You always won everytime you placed a bet" and "You're so damned good no one's gotten to you get" was conveying the sort of inflated braggadocio his father would radiate when telling stories about himself (i.e., "I always win--everytime I place a bet--hey that's just me. I'm so damn good no one can beat me") and Bob Seger in that final scene (as you say metaphorically or literally) comes upon his father engaged once again in his razzle dazzle and is just done with him. I thought for years the character was a successful conman, but those lines like you always won...etc were Bob Seger sort of wryly or bitterly saying the equivalent of "Oh, yeah...sure you did." Years ago I thought "You're still the same--you still aim high" was sort of a compliment but I think it means like you aim high and you have absolutely no way to achieve it and you never do, tho' you brag about being the best and having one over on everybody. I couldn't stand this song when I was younger but now I appreciate how unique it is and how rueful he is about this guy

Those fabulous backup singers are (according to the Stranger In Town album) Venetta Fields, Clydie King, Sherlie Matthews and Oren Waters. Those ladies/and guy were the cream of the crop when it came to session work, they worked with some of the biggest acts of the 60s/70s including Ike & Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, Humble Pie, Barbra Streisand, Elkie Brooks, Neil Diamond, B.B. King, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, Dickey Betts, Joe Walsh, the Rolling Stones and many others. Great song great artist...….

My sister in law went to a concert of someone she didn’t know just to have something to do. (It was the 70’s) She had long wavy red hair to her waist. Her husband got them back stage passes. This guy asked if he could braid her hair. Her husband said YES! He played with her hair and braided it. A little later someone said that the concert was fixing to start. So they went out to the audience and took their seats. The band came out and to her surprise, the guy who braided her hair was Bob Seger.

Sure wish Jamel would have selected the video of this song sung at the 1978 concert at the Sports Arena in San Diego, CA. Not far from where he lives. I was at that concert. One of the best concerts I have ever been to & I have been to many. His smile in the video is just so amazing, you can tell he was just really enjoying what he was doing.
