Back in the days when country music wasn't a bunch of pop stars trying to be country. Thank God Almighty for pioneers like Bob Wills who lead the way for the Texas Outlaw music movement in the early 70's. Bob Wills is still the King of Texas Swing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU so very much for posting this. I never will forget that night in Houston. My Daddy got on the edge of his chair and said "I did'nt think he was still alive"! That night he told me about Bob Wills and my music world ain't been the same since! Been chasin' and dancin' to Texas Western Swing bands ever since! 44 years this fall. I have loved every note of the music and every step on the dance floor!

The timing of this award was perfect...a bad stroke the following year would have prevented him from receiving the award in person. While I think the term "country music" is too narrow of a description for the music Bob Wills played, he certainly deserved induction into the Hall of Fame just as much as anyone else did.

He was SO much more than just country, but he certainly deserved it!

Really pleased to see this bit of history, I had no idea it existed! but it seems to me everybody else crowded Bob Wills out! and wanted to get in the limelight and Bobs appearance was so fleeting!

Bob Wills, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, and Dale Evans....What a record that would've been. Toss in Gene Autry, and the world might've exploded.

In 1962, Roy Acuff became the 4th person inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame; Tex Ritter became the 5th inductee in 1964 (no one was inducted in 1963). In 1968, Bob Wills became the 15th inductee. Roy Rogers was inducted into the Hall twice in the '80s --- the first time as a member of the Sons of the Pioneers in 1980 and the second time as a solo artist in 1988. Had Bob Wills maintained closer ties to Nashville throughout his career, I believe he would have been inducted sooner. Throughout its history, the CMA's Hall of Fame selection committee has definitely favored Nashville-based artists and industry leaders when making its selections. Why else would Uncle Dave Macon, Eddy Arnold, Red Foley, and Jim Reeves all have been inducted BEFORE Bob Wills? These 4 men all belong in the Hall, but I think Bob Wills deserved to be inducted before them. Wills didn't invent Western Swing, but he was the leading artist in that genre --- a giant in terms of popularity and influence. And Tex Ritter? Is he really the 5th most important figure in country music history? No. But he moved to Nashville after his film and music career had dried up on the West Coast. He got himself a Nashville recording contract and was a founding member of the CMA, which established the HOF. When you create a Hall of Fame, it's a cinch that you will one day be inducted into it. I'm not saying Tex doesn't deserve to be in the HOF; he does, just not so high up in the order of induction. His #5 slot is a direct result of his insider status. I believe the CMHOF inductees should be selected on the basis of what they achieved during their careers and not on the lobbying tactics they later pursued with an industry organization. Remember George Morgan, Johnny Bond, and Mac Wiseman? If you don't, it's because they all had respectable BUT NOT REMARKABLE careers as country artists . . . and yet these 3 men are all in the HOF because of lobbying efforts made by their friends and family members long after their careers were over. They were NOT inducted for their musical achievements. Glad I got that off my chest. So, yeah . . . Bob Wills should have been inducted sooner.

This was Bob's night to shine and finally give the credit where it was due...TO TOMMY DUNCAN for shaping the sound of the Playboys and helping hurl Bob into the spotlight. But Bob made no mention. When Johnny Cash was inducted the first thing he did was credit Luther Perkins with shaping his sound. Cash was a class act. Wills missed the boat.

I have to disagree, though Tommy was a good vocalist Bob had many, including Tagg Lambert, it would have been impossible for Bob to thank everyone and the induction show wasn’t a long drawn out speech like now. Bob interviewed 67 singers before picking Tommy, so he obviously already knew the sound he needed and had played it with the Lightcrust Doughboys and Milton Brown long before Tommy

Tommy died in 1968, and I am sorry we did not hear his name. Tommy left Bob several times, always distressed by Bob's work ethic. That is all I will say.

Tommy and Bob had a long history. Tommy left Bob on several occasions, always distressed by Bob's work ethic. There may have been some carryover bad feelings. That's all I will say. (Tommy died in 1968. What a coincidence.)
