Bob, can you tell me why when I do my oxalic acid treatments many bees are coming out the doorway after uncovering them and looking pretty bad sick walking right off the Bottom board and dieing. I'm only using half a teaspoon for 2 deep boxes. I keep them sealed up for 10 minutes and uncover just like the instructions say but each time it seems like the bees are getting blasted and killing several. I'm using the same applicator as in the video. Please help... thanks

With vaporization we rarely have damage to our bees and I think it's the same with Greg. Withe the dribble method it's a different matter. Perhaps your vaporizer is running too hot. Another possible problem could be if thymol or other ethereal oils were recently applied. Oxalic acid has been shown to have a significant toxic synergistic reaction with these if they are present. The good news is that they decrease rapidly, do not leave a significant residue behind, and are only a problem with oxalic acid if freshly applied. Another theory of mine is that if you have a very heavy mite load, could the freshly applied oxalic acid aggravate open wounds or mite bites on some of the bees?

Just a bit more information I have vaporized multiple times and end up with the same result and even went to and went to try a different oxalic acid thinking maybe that was the issue but I had the same results. I reached out to Larry where I purchased the vaporizer and he was at a loss as well as we went over the criteria of the amount of product used, the vaporizer heating to 230ﾟ. I just don't know what to do, I don't want to keep killing bees obviously counterproductive. I know you're probably extremely busy but was wondering if it would be possible to have a phone conversation to maybe get to the bottom of what's happening?

Did you ever come to a conclusion? Im having the same problem. One hive has took a very hard hit and not sure they will make it through the winter now. I used apigaurd in September and fed heavily with essential oils all spring and summer to build a package into 3 double deeps. In the fall I used 1/2 teaspoon of bleach/gal in sugar water to keep it from fermenting. May its a reaction to the bleach? Haven't fed in about 5-6 weeks.

Not good to seal them completely, must have a little room to fly out when they get covered with acid. I stopped covering mine when I saw they get covered with acid. I've been using 4 grams and it works great. read my notes near yours and you'll see why.

We place the tub of oxalic, caps and spoon on a tray and move it pallet to pallet rather than fiddle with all of the items separately. Over the course of a day it saves a lot of time and steps.

Thank you for the information on the pro vap and what kind to get depending on where you treat. Also, the sock is a great idea. As the socks get holes just throw them in the oxalic acid bucket. The amount of oxalic acid is also good news. If I give a little too much it won't bother me so much. As for mite and beekeepers near you, same issue with me. I've tried getting our bee club to all treat within a ten day period in summer. With covid that idea was washed to the side.

No matter how I measure it, 1/4 teaspoon yields about 2.5 grams of oxalic acid crystals. I see 1/4 tsp = 1 gram in a number of places.

Hello Bob. I'm doing oxalic acid vaporizeration treatments today. With the pro vap 110. The bees here in Central Virginia. On average have at the moment have like a dozen or so capped cells. The high for today is supposed to be in the low 50's f. This will be my second treatment. I'm undecided on a third treatment.

Best time to fog is mid Jan or Feb when it hits 55 f or above. No babies or near no Babies. However is also fog early spring 2 times as backup then 2 times first week of Aug. because queen is making winter bees, also space fogging 10 days or more for new emerged bees. 2 times in Dec. at 55 F if possible. The University for bee in Florida says use 4 grams of acid to do a complete job. That is all they do is experiment to see what works. I've been using 4 grams going on 2 years and my inspector found zero mites in my hive this past 6/7/22. I use my own fogger I invented=a propane copper fogger that takes 2 minutes the first hive then about 1 1/2 minutes after it warms up. I drill a 3/8 hole in back my hive to place the 3/8 tube into. My fogger is sold for $ 115.00 including shipping. My front slot remains less than 1/4 inch year round to keep mice and the large killer bee from the hive. in other words my entrance is just big enough for the bees to inter. Very little acid comes out that slot, but the bees covered with acid can get out. I have been seeing to many massive killer wasp in Ohio lately. In heavy flow I remove taped up extra holes I've made in each box except the suppers. I hope to buy one of Bob's queens.

I use a ProVap110 like Greg’s. I also use a hole in the back of the landing board to apply the OAV. Using a 15/64” bit really helps with sagging. 1/4’ is too loose. Golf tee as a placeholder to prevent it from being propolized shut. I’m currently doing a 4x4 OAV series @ 4g/box.

@@russellkoopman3004 I use a 30mL med cup (I use them at work in the hospital), weigh & pack the dose into the cup, put OA cap on med cup, then flip them & rotate med cup. Dose stays in-place. Can do 10+ grams at a time.

I set strips after last honey pull. Before i shed i do OA 2 times 4 to 5 days apart and 3 maybe. when i unshed in spring i will set strips and pull them before i set supers on

Question for Bob or Greg. Why do you treat from the bottom board instead of the top of the hive. As the gas fills the top of the hive wouldn't it have a tendency to drift down as it re-solidifies. Would it provide better coverage?

My guess is that it would work fine from the top. For me the bottom is more convenient.

I'm not familiar with any research pointing towards that specifically but there is research showing that it helps with many other issues. Search the name "Marla Spivak" at the University of Minnesota for her work on propolis.

My hives are about 15 feet from the freight line I live next to and they don't seem to care. There's an intersection nearby so they blast the horn a few times as they approach it. Our sourwood nectar flow is July ending by August 1 and we make honey with splits started in late April and early May. We also feed if there isn't a flow to make sure they grow to be ready on time.

Yes, it's about southern locations more than southern bees. They fly often enough that they don't have an urgent need every time it warms up a little. I'm sure your bees up north have occasions when they have to get out on any chance they get, even if it's a little on the cool side.

@Rex Roberton It is forbidden because of the user’s safety. Commercial beekeepers do it though because of its effectiveness and compatibility for the bees. You can do the dripple only once so that is one disadvantage and much easier with vaping. Really effective if done several time 👍

I'll ask about him about contacting when I talk to him next. I do know that he has an 18 frame Cowen extractor and Cowen capping spinner. He uses the smaller extractor because of limited space but I believe he would prefer something a little bigger. He also has several 50 gallon tanks for storage and stores extra in barrels.
