I don't understand why anyone gets upset if someone says "Oh I thought he was black". People hear a voice and they attach a face to it in their imagination. It's just normal. We all do it. Anyone who gets upset that this happens, THEY'RE the ones who have problems with race. Look, Bobby Caldwell has a voice that sounds similar to the majority of black singers. There are also black singers who sound more like the typical white singer. There are always exceptions to generalities, though, and that's when people get surprised. I feel like apologizing for any white person who gives you a hassle about this.

His record label deliberately tried to hide that he was white for this first album. You look at the album cover and it’s him on a park bench in pitch black so you can’t see him. They thought people would judge him before giving his music a chance basically

Don't let people put you down when you say you didn't know that he was White. Bobby Caldwell said he got a call from Natalie Cole that wanted him to be in a show with her, he could tell by the conversation that she didn't know it. He said he felt good about that. Back in those days you really could not tell a persons color, if they were skinny or short, you only heard them on the radio. Caldwell's album cover had him in the dark b/c HE SAID they were afraid AA's wouldn't buy his album.

He does have a nice mellow sound... Without hustle and bustle and stress of just a rough day... I am 50 and I found it by accident and bookmarked fast feeling relaxed each and every time I viewed.. keep channeling through to 70"s and 80's groove with Caucasian artists and you will open new eyes... Touches of soul and mellow without much stress... Enjoy

I classify that as 'smooth jazz'......rather than putting it in the 'easy-listening' category. If you haven't got any smooth jazz radio stations in your area.....you can find some online....or even find 3-4 hour compilations of that sound on KZbin. I got burnt-out on the same ol' radio stations years ago......before stumbling across a few different smooth jazz stations. Perfect for really just kickin' back to chill with a glass of wine & relax with the positive vibes.

Bobby Caldwell! Still performing, mostly in Japan. The story is he wrote the song in 2 days. His record company intentional left his face off of the album cover. The purpose was to see how it would be received in the black urban radio setting. He was on tour with Natalie Cole. The audience was mostly black. When he came out, you could hear a pin drop!! The record was already a smash it. Even today, March, 2021, it is still played. I heard it on the radio 2 days ago. He will be 70 in August.

Okay girl, I totally knew what you were thinking in the beginning of the song but that's okay. That's the beauty of music, talented people regardless of who performs it, if it sounds good that's all that matters. This was a big hit for Bobby Caldwell back in 1978. Not too bad for a white boy from New York City. Check out his song called MY FLAME, you will recognize how familiar the melody sounds to the song especially to all the hip hop heads. Girl, don’t even make excuses, you don’t have to. Let’s face it, the majority of soul singers are black, and white people sing other stuff usually. But sometimes it switches. Nothing wrong with thinking he’s black, that’s a compliment. To me that means his soul is true. I had one dude call his momma on the phone when we were singing karaoke because I was almost there singing some old Whispers tune. That he was that impressed, made me happy. I think I have soul, my parents raised me well. Anyway... I just learned today that this guy was white... 😂😂😂

I didn’t know he was a white guy until about 10 years ago. Another credit to Bobby is that he wrote this tune. As far as the instrumental arrangement… I don’t know if he arranged it or not. He later went on to sing big band crooner style music and does quite well at that.

Yeah -- I'm a professional musician my whole life and always thought he was a black dude. You know, there are lots of "blue-eyed soul" singers through time who are great: Righteous Bros, Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald who are amazing and great. And they took inspiration from Black singers. But with Caldwell it just came out in this perfect "Black-sounding" way. All good. So I dig the people acknowledging his soulful; vibe. Not trying hard, -- just how it came out for him. RIP. There was a funny bit on "Blackish" where the main cat talks about "finding out that Bobby Caldwell was white". Great stuff! We're all here together! All cool

I definitely have never heard this song before. Don't know who Bobby Caldwell is either. So I start at zero. The sound is like a cross between Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder--so white jazz and black funk. I smiled when you said you thought he was or might be black. You know, a lot of people originally used to think Van Morrison was black. Then to add to the confusion, he is actually from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Anyhow, this was an interesting review/reaction. And I continue to subscribe, only, to this channel because this is where all the smart talk happens.

He did a duet with former Miss America......Vanessa Williams....who has gone on to become a wonderful actress & gifted recording artist. One of my favorite holiday songs has been 'Baby It's Cold Outside'.....sung by them about 24 years ago. Only 2 years ago, I discovered THIS clip of them singing it on a Christmas special. I was completely blown away to discover that dude was white. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4XRgGtri82cgJI Check out their performance here.
