Bobby Caldwell was born in Manhattan, but grew up in Miami, Florida. His mother sold real estate and one of her clients was reggae singer Bob Marley; Caldwell and Marley became friends. Growing up in Miami exposed Caldwell to a variety of music such as Haitian, Latin, reggae, and R&B. His parents hosted a local variety television show called Suppertime. He grew up listening to the music of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. When he was 12, Caldwell started playing piano and guitar. He was drawn to rock and roll, jazz, and rhythm and blues.

For all those who say soul doesn’t have a color you’re absolutely right but when you talk about this exact brand of music it typically comes from black artist 99.9% of the time and the few white artist that break out imitating this style all cite black artist as their influence so it’s not disrespect that white as well as black thought he was black it just comes with the territory the black community embraced him as one of their own for being able to mimic it so well and it’s played in black households and bar b Qs frequently and he himself said that’s what he was aiming for the soul train mowtown vibe and when they embraced him he knew he had achieved it so props to him it’s a classic song but let’s not play dumb we’re adults his album cover is literally telling you.. that’s what blacks had to do in the early ages so the whites would buy the music he knows it has to be about the music he copied that archetype and people are still figuring out till this day he’s white it’s OK
