Bobby Darin has this warm rich mature emotional vocals, he digs right down deep into the song for it's total essence and delivers something exceptional every time..... No mater the song Bobby sings it will always touch you deep within your own heart and soul.... Bobby gives 1,000 percent every time, never leaving out the smallest detail, what you hear is pure magic, pure Bobby Darin style all the way..... Thank you Bobby for gracing our world and sharing your awesome talents with us... What a legend, he left a huge legacy and awesome body of work for generations to come, we his adoring fans still have the opportunity to watch and listen to Bobby's songs daily.... Bobby out shone all others in the business and is the greatest of them all.... There is no better, Bobby is the man, the king of the mountain..... I remember this night on television, I was glued to the screen not taking my eyes off Bobby, he had this magnetism that just pulled you in to his story as he sang..... Bless you Bobby you did your part so well and will be rewarded in Heaven for eternity... Bobby Darin the man, the master of song who rocks the world RIP BOBBY DARIN XO

I don't think it's even possible for a human being to more fundamentally misunderstand a song and deliver it with as much stiff and self-regarding misinterpretation, as he did.

@@lewis7515 In terms of mis-calibration, this one is nothing compared to Artificial Flowers. He did this kind of thing in a number of songs. Perhaps it was a conscious artistic choice?

It's sad that there's not much available on DVD or KZbin from bobby darin 📀 even his own tv variety show is so severely edited you're getting basically half a show and most of the music is cut out it's sad because he was one of the best 🎹🎤🎶

LOL. Bobby must have been such a bonehead to make this song sound so victorious.

Maybe he was being so ironic it's hard to tell? Or probably most singers and musicians aren't as smart as we'd like to think.🙁

The song was written by Randy Newman to represent a tragic story of how America might have been presented to slaves before they were sailed there. Newman is quoted as saying he's not sure if Bobby Darin understood the song since his recording seemed to have a happy vibe.

the song is by Randy Newman, it's from the voice of a slaver trying to convince an african to board a ship to America. It's pretty obviously not meant to romanticize or celebrate the narrator. In fact it even illustrates a kind of stupid man selling snake oil. It's an indictment of the american dream. the atlantic slave trade. Whiteness. and anti-black racism all-in-one. Darin's peurile performance here definitely doesn't give the song it's proper voice. Check out Randy Newman's album version, or Ray Charles version.

@@Sam-cv6un I'm disappointed in some of these later comments. Happy vibe? Bobby Darin was a happy person. Anyone who thinks he didn't know exactly what he was singing about either never listened to him or never heard him.
