I don't think it's even possible for a human being to more fundamentally misunderstand a song and deliver it with as much stiff and self-regarding misinterpretation, as he did.

@@lewis7515 In terms of mis-calibration, this one is nothing compared to Artificial Flowers. He did this kind of thing in a number of songs. Perhaps it was a conscious artistic choice?

It's sad that there's not much available on DVD or KZbin from bobby darin 📀 even his own tv variety show is so severely edited you're getting basically half a show and most of the music is cut out it's sad because he was one of the best 🎹🎤🎶

LOL. Bobby must have been such a bonehead to make this song sound so victorious.

Maybe he was being so ironic it's hard to tell? Or probably most singers and musicians aren't as smart as we'd like to think.🙁

The song was written by Randy Newman to represent a tragic story of how America might have been presented to slaves before they were sailed there. Newman is quoted as saying he's not sure if Bobby Darin understood the song since his recording seemed to have a happy vibe.
@nathanreiber68192 жыл бұрын
the song is by Randy Newman, it's from the voice of a slaver trying to convince an african to board a ship to America. It's pretty obviously not meant to romanticize or celebrate the narrator. In fact it even illustrates a kind of stupid man selling snake oil. It's an indictment of the american dream. the atlantic slave trade. Whiteness. and anti-black racism all-in-one. Darin's peurile performance here definitely doesn't give the song it's proper voice. Check out Randy Newman's album version, or Ray Charles version.

@@Sam-cv6un I'm disappointed in some of these later comments. Happy vibe? Bobby Darin was a happy person. Anyone who thinks he didn't know exactly what he was singing about either never listened to him or never heard him.
