Bobby Darin makes a 1960 appearance on "Sunday Night At The London Palladium"
.
Sunday Night at the London Palladium was a British television variety show produced by ATV for the ITV network, originally running from 1955 to 1967, with a brief revival in 1973 and 1974. The London Palladium is a theatre in London's West End.
The regular hosts of the Palladium show were Tommy Trinder (1955--1958), Bruce Forsyth (1958--1960 and 1961-64), Don Arrol (1960--61), Norman Vaughan (1962--1965, 1974), Jimmy Tarbuck (1965--67) and Jim Dale (1973-74). Other guest comperes were: Hughie Green, Alfred Marks, Robert Morley, Arthur Haynes, Dickie Henderson, Dave Allen, Des O'Connor, Bob Monkhouse and Roger Moore.
The first ever show was compered by Tommy Trinder with Gracie Fields and Guy Mitchell being the night's big guests. The programme was one of ITV's most watched, reaching its biggest audience in January 1960 while Bruce Forsyth was the host, in an edition featuring Cliff Richard and The Shadows, watched by more than 20 million people.

Bobby was a close friend of mine. For those who love his music, I want you to know that he was as kind, thoughtful and generous as he was talented. As a performer and recording artist, he gave everybody everything he had. To those who got to experience that energy personally, he was an wonderful friend, never farther than a phone call away.

What an incredible joy it must have been to be friends with him. I'm so happy you got to experience that, and thank you for reaffirming how wonderful he was... I know the world still distrusts a Kevin Spacey, but I will forever be grateful that he did the movie Beyond the Sea, because Bobby deserves the recognition❤

Sophie Tucker did it first (1927). kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXOxaKCKe9F7psk Walden Robert Cassotto heard it as a child. And BD paid tribute to Ms. Tucker in his interpretation. Admittedly, he did it better, and nobody will ever top his. But all are welcome in music. It isn't competition. It is music. For ALL.

This is Bobby Darin singing up a storm in his own swinging style, brilliant.... Bobby always held his fans captured in his hands thrilling us all the way..... He made a huge impression on generations of people young and older alike who loved him for his wonderful entertaining talents and different styles of music.... Singing, song writing, and playing music was Bobby's first love, he did this to perfection, then there was his acting, wonderful stuff..... This young man, Bobby Darin was a genius, master of his own destiny all his life, sadly it was to be short lived, but man he packed so much into those years achieving all he set out to do, others who lived longer lives falling short.... An exceptionally multi-talented young man with incredible insight, born at the right time to take his placed in musical history, helping to reshape it to what we know today...... Thank you for the cherished and precious memories you gave us Bobby, you made this huge difference in the lives of many across the globe for which we are grateful..... REST IN ETERNAL PEACE BOBBY DARIN YOU ARE MISSED, LOVED, REMEMBERED.

Edith Symmans., I’ve enjoyed and agree with everything you have posted regarding Bobby Darin. I’m an 82 yr.old lady that’s loved him and his talents from the first time I heard him perform . I’m still trying to read and view anything I can find about his life. It sounds like you knew him personally. Lucky lady. Sad that he didn’t get to enjoy his son Dodd and his beautiful family. I’ve passed on to my five daughter’s and now my grandchildren and great- grandchildren my love of his talents and hope they do the same. At least they know who Bobby Darin is. Thank you for writing so many wonderful things about him and helping to keep him in the Spotlight. Sincerely,Chris 🥀

Thanks for this. NEVER remove it. I will listen often to this amazing version. He was so good but now in 2021 I’m discovering what a great entertainer he was. Loved his music in the 60’s but now I’m discovering how remarkable he was. TELL YOUR FRIENDS. He did wonderful impressions, had a great sense of humor and timing, played 6 instruments and couldn’t write notes or read music, dances, sings all genre of music and with his deep emotions, makes each song his own. He was a very good actor and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well as the Las Vegas Walk of Fame. He won numerous rewards and we fans should encourage others to delve into this mans contribution to the entertainment industry. I read his son Dodd Darins book about him and wife Sandra Dee. So good I read it twice. Bobby had a tough life and approached life as if every day was his last. He knew his life was short and he was determined to be a star. 37 years was all he had but he’s a bigger brighter star today than any current performers. He gave 100% to each performance, then went backstage and was on oxygen! There will never be another Bobby Darin. Shine on Bobby, we still love you and you’re not forgotten.

Magnifique.

This song defines a relationship I had. She confessed she still feels her heart stumbling when she listens to it; 'cause the lyrics became true after she coldly left me. Funny, when I first showed her this song I just wanted to dance with her to it. I sang it to her in her ears, we laughed. Couldn't imagine it would become a prophetic moment.

Bobby Darin was a long way from Classical...She was on "Whats my Line", in our living-rooms Every week, but I'll bet that was before You were Born! ... She was Classy, and Brave in my book. ...as far as dis-respecting Country Music...have you ever heard the term "NASHVILLE-MUCK"?.. why don't you go watch some Nascar or Robert Tilton? ...and Leave this ALONE!
@MeadeSkeltonMusic
@MeadeSkeltonMusic 8 жыл бұрын
Steve Howle I don't watch Nascar, thanks! REAL Country Music is amazing in the history of the music its very much an art form. Yet Miss Kilgallen didn't want them in New York. Which she said "Get out of town the hillbillies are coming". When the VERY TALENTED Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline were headlining at her beloved Carnegie Hall. They could sing circles around any Pop music hacks. . The Grand Ol Opry played New York to a SOLD OUT crowd. Poor Miss Killgallen must have had her dear head explode to get around that. My favorites are Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and the greats of Country Music. She had no respect.The wicked witch of the East Dorothy Killgallen was outraged. Well she was just a witch with no chin. Thanks.

I've revisited this video because I've read in Shane Brown's book on Bobby that he misses the last note in this performance of the song. While he may certainly be a bit flat, I wish all mistakes were like that. I expected something much more evident (though I cannot remember Bobby making a glaring mistake when singing... Except that time he forgot the lyrics to 'That Funny Feeling' and provided one of his funniest moments, getting out of his predicament in great style).

I wouldn't put my head on the block for the note being completely in pitch throughout its entire length, but I wouldn't call that 'missing' it, not at all. In fact, I wouldn't have called it anything, had I not read that sentence in the book. Brown says that Bobby's rendition of 'The Gal that Got Away' on his TV special during the same UK tour was even worse, but that's not on KZbin, I think... And I don't think it is going to be that bad, either. I haven't seen it. Darin didn't seem to have a rapport with some of the British audiences or journalists on that tour, so perhaps someone wrote something disparaging without having actually heard him, and Brown consulted written rather than video sources. I'm still waiting to see a bad performance by Bobby Darin.

Bobby's version of this song off of his "That's All" LP is actually a bit slower than the version this band played. I've wondered if some PR man just sent an advance copy of the album along with the arrangement to this conductor and musicians, and they simply practiced what they heard on the record. Compare the two sometime. Interestingly similar.
