Kovacevic is a cool guy. Showed up to this tournament, posterized bobby fischer at his peak, finished somewhere near the middle & then went back to become a teacher or something

Jonathan penrose is a cool guy too, he was not quite active in chess (because he became lecturer in university) but beat world champion tal in 1960 olympiad

Around 2014 I was waiting for my families' turn to get olives processed into oil, so with a couple of my nephews I played chess on the wall outside the refinery in Igrane. An older man approached us and watched as we played. My nephews, being.. well, endearingly outgoing asked the man if he wanted to play with us. He was very strong and easily beat me. He was kind and agreed to play another game. He beat me again easily but said that I played well and asked if I played in a club. I told him that I only played online. Since he was older I went into some details of online play, thinking it would sound interesting to him. I mentioned that there are even ranked players on that site, even GRANDMASTERS! But.. I said I never played against one. He chuckled and said "Until now you haven't." Then he introduced himself as Vlatko Kovačević!

That is so cool! Thank you for sharing that story. What a memory. ❤️

Kovacevic is still alive aged 82 and must have replayed this game many times. He actually seems to have gained 30 or 40 rating points in 2018-9 to reach 2470 when he would have been about 76.

I'm not sure I've heard the phrase "Fisher blunders" before. Thanks, Jerry.

It must have been pretty humbling for Fischer to have been bested by a relatively unknown chess player. And what a story for Kovacevic to tell his grandkids later! "Your Grandpa is 1-0 against Bobby Fischer. With Black pieces, no less. Not a big deal, I know"
@coosoorlog20 күн бұрын
"Okay, okay, you beat me in a friendly blitz game at 11 pm on christmas eve Hannah, congratulations, but do you know who your *great grandpa beat in a REAL game half a century ago? No, it was not Gotham Chess."

Beating Fischer is a huge accomplishment, bigger than beating Carlsen IMHO (and I'm Norwegian). Weirdly enough, I have not heard about this Mr. Kovacevic before. Much respect. Tanks for the interesting analysis Jerry.

Kovacevic is an average GM but in this game he showed up big time

Very nice game by Kovacevic! Its surprising that Fischer lost in this manner near the height of his powers. Thanks Jerry!

What about Fischer's famous loss in Game 1 of his world championship match against Spassky?
@bartman89821 күн бұрын
@Trulsbk i haven't seen that video. I did read the book and saw the play on Broadway.

@bartman898 Jerry has an older video on Petrosian vs Fischer. Petrosian dodged Fischer's punches, pursued imbalances, and made Fischer's attack look silly. Petrosian went on to win and I think he also defeated Fischer's winning streak at the time. Highly recommend watching that game.

Being thinking of playing the French defense as an alternative to Caro Kann. Thanks for the video. Which variations and lines do you guys think are solid for black, and also offer attacking chances??

One of the Great Upsets of Chess! Don't forget the Reti-Capablanca Upset. Also, Perez got Alekhine with a Kings Gambit in Spain in 1943.

From an interview with Ljubomir Ljubojević, Serbian chess grandmaster: After the game, however, he was in good spirits, he even laughed. 'What happened, Bobby?', people asked him. He said: 'During the dinner, I drank two glasses of red wine, thinking that my opponent is unknown and I'll be White. Then I went to the game, but he played better than a world champion! So, I deserved it.'

Fischer supposedly once said "The French is for cowards"; everyone who ever played the French defense against better opponents knows, that the exact opposite is true: you must be ready to sac and seek counterplay at every turn and also not castling for a long time in some positions, since otherwise you get positionally crushed. Fischer must have said this after one of his losses in the French (which were quite a few, for example against Uhlmann and Korchnoi, both ardent French players, tacticians and counter attackers).
@gmnotyet21 күн бұрын
Uhlmann also crushed Fischer once with the Winawer. But Bobby beat it when it counted, against Larsen, Game 1.

Kovacevic indeed played well, but this is the worst analysis done on this Chess Network site. Terribly confusing, badly worded, etc.
