1972-08-31. Last game of the WCC match (Sicilian Taimanov). Fischer played a line of the Sicilian that he had never before played as Black and further surprised Spassky with a novelty on move 8 (exd5). Equal middlegame, then advantage Fischer. The game was adjourned with an advantage for Fischer. The next day, the Arbiter informed Fischer that Spassky had resigned the game by telephone.
