Great shot under pressure. Very lucky that TV was there and they had a symphony orchestra ready.

When I see and compare this movie and the Legend of Bagger Vance. I think that the Bobby Jones from the Vance movie portrays Jones better. The Walter Hagen role is best in this movie.

Billy Gee you may admire Bobby Jones but you dont know very much about him his swing was peotry in motion but it was far from perfect as Mr Jones himself has pointed out in his tutorials he had a figure 8 swing path which as he said is not perfect but it was graceful and without a doubt he was the greatest golfer to ever play the game period there are some close seconds but he was the best

I doubt you saw him play so I don’t know how you can say he was the best. For me there are 5 at the top of the tree. I wouldn’t split them Jones, Hagan, Hogan, Nicklaus, Woods.

None of the golfers would have been permitted to refer to the tournament as the "British Open". The entire nation, let alone tournament officials, would have taken them to task. On their shores, it is necessary to call it, simply, "The Open" ... as in "THE" Open, to differentiate it from "lesser" Opens ... such as, the US Open.

Hagen finished later and on the last needed to hole his second shot to tie. He asked his caddie to tend the flag and hit a good shot but ended up over the green in a bunker, finishing with a 6 for 3rd place. The truth is better than the fiction.

Obviously not filmed at Lytham (you can't see the sea from from this course.) Anyone know where this was filmed? Think this is filmed at perhaps Kingsbarns, Fife, Scotland. Looks like the Fife coastline.

I think you're missing the point. It's about telling a story, not swing mechanics.

It would have been a great feat even if he had thrown it out, which since it is suggested that, he was using a putter, he would have needed to do from that bunker! Just watched the film again, he obviously didn't put the ball in the air as shown but it is a very strange bunker.

I cannot watch a man who knows nothing about how to hit a golf ball swing like a 30 handicapper and pretend to be the sweetest swinger of all time...the most interesting thing about bobby jones was his beautiful golf swing...boo...booooo

Can't be one of the St Andrews Links Trust courses though? (Old Course, New Course, Jubilee course, Eden course etc) You can't see really see the sea like this from any of the St Andrews Links Trust courses (except the Castle course so it could be this.) Maybe one of the two courses at the St Andrews Fairmont hotel then? Can't think of any other St Andrews courses where you see trees like this (at 1.05). Kingsbarns has though.

This is total bollocks. Jones wasn't playing with Hagen in the final 2 rounds of the British Open, he was paired with Al Watrous who led most of the way. Jones's great shot was not out of a bunker it was with a five iron from a poor sandy lie on the left side of the hole, which he carried about 170 yards over a lot of bunkers and hit the green, after which Watrous 3 putted.

Did some research, it's Kingsbarns (10 mins to the south of St Andrews). The 'clubhouse' here is an old manor house just outside the village of Crail. Some other scenes from the film might have been in St Andrews itself, but this is Kingsbars. Kingsbarns is a fabulous course but a fortune to play (it was built as a pay as you play course). However, if you go to Kingsbarns beach, you can then find the public coastal path where you walk right next to the course and you see these amazing views.

Man, no kidding...you guys have nailed it. Why take dramatic license for no particular reason? The original was a better shot, and the setting just as good. Pfffft. I'm not advising anybody not to watch the movie (I hear Caviezel is actually pretty good in the role, by the standards of most fictional golf movies), but it can't beat watching old films of the real Jones playing and talking about the swing. By the way, Caviezel was _unbelievable_ in The Thin Red Line.

But this wasn't the shot that Jones hit. he was 175 yards away in a sandy/scrub area and hit it inside Watrous' ball.

@jwnrtj i think it's a bit miss matched, cos the story about not being able to get in the clubhouse main entrance was at royal st Georges,it's a funny story, cos the king wanted to talk to him after about the win, but was refused entry, until the king threatened to revoke the"Royal" status.

This scene is not set at Lytham in 1926 but at Hoylake in 1930. The giveaway was the reference to Interlachen, site of the 1930 US Open.

Didn't happen. He actually hit a second shot out of the sand dunes on the green closer than his opponent (which wasn't Hagen) from the fairway. Still a brilliant shot but it doesn't look as good on film
