In architectural practice we wrestle with a tension between authenticity and correctness, between emotional connection and rigid doctrine, and between myth and reality, in order to tell a beautiful story. This is the poetry of place.
In this lecture from November 2020 (part of the ICAA-Utah and UVU lecture series), Bobby McAlpine takes us on a journey through some of his most memorable architectural stories. McAlpine has been designing homes since he was a young child. He believes home is a timeless, graceful, and emotionally evocative place. He founded his firm 1983 and has built beloved, traditional homes all across the country. Bobby has also written three books and has his own furniture line.

Bobby’s firm is designing our farm, and we couldn’t be more pleased with their work, their unique vision and their palpable passion for their art.

thank you for posting. It is amazing that I can sit in for free to this lecture, the "university in my pocket". My wife and I are hoping to build a home next year and I found this very educational for me.

This is a very boring video judging by 1st 10 minutes…. You need some other visuals on screen ! I’m sure to others it is fabulous !

This is certainly not a video for anyone needing instant gratification. BUT for those who are willing to acclimate to the speaker's measured pace, the payoff is tremendous. The ending tribute was so beautiful. What an honor it would be to work with the folks at McAlpine.

Dear Nancy, you need to listen with more than the visuals. There are so many multi meanings to each of his statements. . Start by reading his books to further understand and begin to comprehend his genius. His illustration of the truth is very much like Christian’s in Pilgrim’s Progress. Reaching the river has many paths to moving forward. And he is striving to get to the truth and not the “ clutter”. Be Blessed. He is a Giant among many!
