He was a class act both on & off the ice: loyal, tough, humble, always hard working, & talent reaching to the nose-bleed sections.

Years back, Gordie Howe was talking about the game, and somehow the conversation got around to discussing Orr, and Howe said that the greatest blow to the NHL as a league in his lifetime/career was the premature retirement of Bobby Orr due to injuries. That's quite an endorsement from the man they call "Mr.Hockey," and himself often mentioned as the greatest player ever. Gretzky and Lemieux may have been the greatest point-producers of all time, but the greatest all-around player in the history of the game must be either Howe or Orr. The nod probably goes to Orr for the manner in which he utterly transformed and modernized the game.

being a hockey player my whole life growing up in minnesota and then working in the golf biz and playing a lot of golf with former NHL greats, every single one of them said Orr is the greatest to ever play the game ,not gretzky. And these guys thought gretzky was incredible but Orr changed the game and could do every aspect of the game is the reason he was the best ever in their opinion. Defense, Offense, Speed, Toughness, he was as good as anyone ever in every key aspect is what they looked at. Gretzky was phenomenal but truly just an offensive player, so Orr was hands down the greatest ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim Wade Orr is very overrated. The Flyers bullies him out of two cups and the Habs lifted 8 cups in his face! Potvin stoped the Habs Dynasty - created an Isles Dynasty - and it took an Oilers Dynasty team to stop Potvins Isles! The word Dynasty never applies to Orr! Potvin stopped the Flyers team that beat up on Orrs Bruins and also easily put the Bruins in their place! Potvin is Top 5 as Orr is not even top 20!

The saddest thing was that Mr. Orr's career ended at age 30--there simply weren't the advancements in orthopedic surgery for knee injuries there are today--to repair a cartilage injury in those days was major surgery-where as today a player can get back to playing much sooner

@johnrussell5937 жыл бұрын
Jon Saw Check your stats on fights before commenting. If you add the number fights that Gretzky, Lemieux and Gordie Howe had it still would not total the number BOBBY ORR had. The problem is that he was so great at real hockey very few even noticed his fights. Real hockey doesn't have fighting. Go watch boxing or MMA and hopefully a hockey game doesn't break out in the middle.

Mr. Orr, Today May 10, 2020 marks 50 years since "The Goal". I grew up in Massachusetts and had a front row seat watching your incredible career. It was very thoughtful of you when the opposition was on the power play to skate around Boston Garden a few times. It gave the fans at home time to go to the kitchen and make a quick sandwich. I also had the pleasure of caddying for you in a pro-am golf tournament after your career ended. Yes, I was awestruck! The years have flown by. I want to thank you for mailing the (30) 8" X 10" photographs of yourself and personalizing each one to a list of friends I gave you. I also appreciated the phone call you made to my home. I'm sorry I missed the call but you spoke to my Mom. It kind of seems fitting it happened that way. Today is Mother's Day. I haven't forgotten the trivia question you asked me that day. Who was on the ice when the Stanley Cup winning goal was scored. I messed it up at the time but you schooled me. Bobby Orr, Don Awrey, Derek Sanderson, Ed Westfall and Wayne Carleton. Thank you for the way you treated me that day. You made me feel comfortable calling you Bobby. I hope the years gone by have been as good to you as you have been to humanity. I hope your golf game is in a good place. Happy 50th

Bobby Orr was not only the greatest hockey player in the history of the game, he was the greatest athlete in the history of organized professional sports. No other athlete in any other sport did what he did. He was a true visionary, totally re-defining the sport he played, taking it apart and putting it back together again, re-creating it in his own image. The hockey we see today should be given another name, so fundamentally different it is from the sport as it was before Orr.
@alanbarnett69934 жыл бұрын
"No other athlete in any other sport did what he did." Not true; Babe Ruth did. In 1920, Ruth led the majors with 54 home runs; George Sisler was second with 19. In fact, he hit more HRs than any other TEAM in the AL (and 7 of the 8 teams in the NL).

Stop. The NBA has an active player who has changed the game in his image. Bo Jackson was a legitimate two-sport athlete in two of the four major sports. Tom Brady? Tiger Woods? Michael Jordan? I think Bobby Orr is in the top 3 NHL players ever, at worst. But plenty of other athletes make the final cut as best ever.

Well well, many opinions here. Even Wayne Gretzky himself said the greatest player ever was Bobby Orr. And they used heavy wooden sticks back then. Not these laser shooters used today. Oh really, ghytgb? Orr was a pussy and couldn't fight? Hahaha! Not sure where you got your information, but that is a "flat out" lie. Bobby Orr could fight and did so, many times. He just wasn't a goon. Bobby Orr was, and is, to this day, the ONLY DEFENSEMAN in History, to ever lead the entire NHL in scoring, and he actually did that twice! And check this out. - Bobby Orr is the only player to ever win a Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe trophy, the Hart trophy, the Art Ross trophy, and the Norris trophy in a single season. He is the only defenseman to have 9 career Hat Tricks. He set single season record for assists (102) and points by a defenseman (139) and plus/minus rating (+124) Gretzky was awesome, no argument here! But, he was not only surrounded by NHL All Stars, he was surrounded by NHL Hall of Famers. And here's some additional info for everyone to ponder. First off, Hockey was traditionally a Canadian and Russian sport. American's played Baseball. Bobby Orr was so good, and so popular, that many American youth wanted to play hockey. And more, and more ice rinks were being built for that purpose. And it is actually documented that some of those youth grew up to become the 1980 US Olympic, "Miracle On Ice" Champions. Those players admitted they got into hockey after watching Bobby Orr. Pretty impressive stuff. That Russian team was so good, they literally beat some NHL teams in exhibition games prior to the start of the 1980 Olympics. And those young college kids, (No Pro's allowed back then.) defeated that amazing powerhouse, USSR team. . .

@ghytgb7 жыл бұрын
His scoring was done against washed up old garbage goaltenders and also against AHL quality / expansion era goaltenders. Nothing to be proud of. The high lite videos of him making toast out of washed up bald headed defensmen seals the deal.

So.............Just a Bruins hater and a NJ Devils fan. Too bad the Devils suck. Scott Stevens had zero offensive skill. Zero! One dimensional player. He could not even hold Orr's jock strap. The Devils only won their Cups because of the Neutral Zone Trap and the 2 line offsides pass rule back in the day. Their Stanley Cup wins were a joke. The NHL took out the 2 line offsides rule because of the absolute boring (neutral zone trap) hockey played by the Devils. The Devils play the most boring hockey I have ever seen in my entire life. It was ruining the game of hockey. Huge mistake to trade Larrsson for Hall by the way. Rangers are better than the Devils. Heck 30 teams are better than the Devils.

Yup. By about the 71-72 season Bobby Orr rarely even raised his hockey stick. It seemed the more he impacted the game, the less attention he wanted to draw to himself. Quite a humble guy. But the greatest foe on ice. IMO, nobody has ever matched the overall all-encompassing talents of Orr. In high school I studied everything about him, read his books, watched him on tape, etc and tried to model his defenseman playing style. Even down to the 2 strips of tape on my stick and no socks (my skates were 3 sizes too small anyway). But it was only a year or two ago I discovered that Orr was also the fastest skater in the league.
