This is the epitome of a great cover. Bobby Womack stays true to the song, but totally makes it his own, so that it feels familiar but totally fresh. This version is absolutely mesmerizing. I heard this yesterday on NPR while in the car and it was one of those moments I'll never forget, like being transported out of time. And I say this as someone who loves the Mamas & Papas original rendition.

It isn't a Mamma's And The Papa's song. It was Barry McGuire who recorded it originally. M&P used the exact same backing track as Barry's version erased his vocals and put their own on. If you listen carefully right at the start, Barry can still be heard singing 'All the leaves'.
