I’m so glad you elaborated on the kettle drums. These are powerful instruments, perfectly suited to this version of the song, but it takes a special singer to have them within a few meters of him, and not be overpowered by their power. Speaks to the pure, natural power of David’s voice.

What’s crazy is he was sick and specifically told them NO auto-tuning, PERIOD. They did it slightly and he was not happy. But in all honestly his classical training being a Cantor shines through in this performance and gives you both the gentle start, the warning, and then the distortion drops in to reiterate “we have missed the warning of the song originally”. He is just barely nasally but that’s after listening to it 1000s of times. See him live earlier this year on their tour was awesome to hear this performed

Apparently, and I can't remember where from, Paul Simon said their version was a warning, and Disturbed's version in anger at what we've allowed to happen! I love this version, the acapella is somehow even more 'disturbing' and I love that just as much.

YES! I was still in elementary school when this song was first released by Simon and Garfunkel. I always loved the song because it brought to mind the anti-Viet Nam war protests and the inability to stop it with all the protests and political fighting. This version brought tears to my eyes because when my generation was young, many of us fought hard for justice and equality and love for all. The song reminds me of how little we accomplished. I really hope young people do a better job than we did. This song is a cry for people to wake up because things are so bad for so many today.

Everything tearing our country apart. I hope we are better able to weather what is happening now than we were then.

His guitarist is who is playing the piano for this song. David trained as a Canter (Jewish prayer leader) as a child. David also trains with a vocal coach to keep his voice the way it should be.

Disturbed is a heavy metal band from Chicago formed around 1994 and singer David Draiman joined in 1996. David had actually been a cantor at his synagogue in the past...to end up in heavy metal was a jump for sure. Then for this heavy metal band to come out with this remake of Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel...wow. The original meaning of the song (written during a time of a lot of unrest and change 1960s) was about people being unable to effectively communicate with each other, especially on an emotional level and kind of a warning of the effect if it didn't change. Fast forward to now and the meaning is even more profound and true today, and this version by Disturbed is driving that point (the music video is really good....but the intense emotionality of David's voice in this live performance is so much more). People have said that Paul Simon's version was the warning, and this song was the anger because no one listened. When they did this live performance, David was very sick with flu, which is why he was sitting. To be able to sing and perform like this while so sick is a testament to his incredible and beautiful baritone voice. Reply

David was furious afterward because the engineer did sneak some in. 2- Paul Simon heard this live in his living room for the first time. Paul went to the floor crying by the end. They're friends now.

David was recovering from the flu and had lesions on his vocal folds. His surgeon told him not to do this performance. That's just further testament to his talent. He did a great interview with Elizabeth at The Charismatic Voice where they talked about this performance.

Right lyrics, right set, right arrangement, right band, right artist! The synergy is undeniable! One of the best covers of all time, this live version the best of David's best of The Sound of Silence. Still have to say Paul Simon wrote a masterpiece and I've loved it since I was 22 when it first came out and can't say anything bad about the original but this cover, oh my, different and better in it's own way. The simplicity, the set was perfect, that cold blue lighting slowly going to warm as the song progressed added to the ambient feel of the rising emotions. Impressive, classic, timeless, it will be on my playlist until the day I die. I have a playlist with extraordinary covers and this is going right there along with Eva Cassidy's "Over the Rainbow," Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou" and "Desperado," and others.

My understanding that he had enough fever to be measurably sick, not just feeling unwell. It wasn't certain until quite late if he could make it at all, but they gave him a chair to sit on and he pulled it through. You can see it in his eyes, too. But he pulled through, and on the voice the sickness is apparently only in slightly more nasality being present. A real pro.

I saw an interview with David. He mentioned that he had a lesion on his vocal cord, which if you don't control things just right, becomes extremely painful. I grew up with clasical music, and nheavy metal. Me mother loved Carmina Burana from Orff and Black Sabbath. :D Both she and my father played a lot of instruments. And sang in a lot of choirs. I learned very young to hold a notefor a long time in front of a candle without blowing it out. ;) But I never had the VOICE. :) And the changing between head resonance and the diaphragm, the thing rigth above your stomac (hell, I'm Norwegian :D ). Anyways, I know all these things....but Davids voice. :)

He is a classically trained Jewish Cantor. That takes talent to a new level. His life history is very interesting. I believe his grandfather was a Jewish cantor in a synagogue in Jerusalem. Interesting family history and his schooling.

David has an incredible voice, no doubt. I love watching vocal coaches and similar folks analyzing the amazing things he does. But I have to say I cringe when reactors go to listen to this performance without knowing that autotune was involved. I know David was unhappy about it, but it still affects the overall sound and sometimes it feels like "cheating" if the listener isn't aware. Once you know you can hear it, but you can also hear the raw talent behind it. Thank you for your videos. I love the insightful comments you have on the accompaniment. It makes me miss my highschool band days. (Except my band teacher wasn't as pleasant as you are! Haha!)
