Lyrics:
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

As an old soul 28 year old, sometimes I switch between that being a good thing and a bad thing. The young will always make mistakes, and will forever change the dynamic. I've been lucky in keeping apace with the times, but I fear one day that won't be the case. There's also old people with new ideologies, and young with old ideologies. The best we can do sometimes is adapt, and let people make mistakes.

Mr Dylan has gone to great lengths to disassociate himself from the songs he wrote and be labeled as the voice of a generation or anything else. He seems to know the truth behind what he writes, but doesn't want any recognition for it. That's the mark of a prophet. There are others, too, some still living to this day.

This, plain and simply, is probably the best song ever written. To write deep and profound lyrics, in which every single word is as relevant in 2021 as it was in 1964 says it all. These words will ring true in 200 years as well, i'm sure. This song alone is proof of his Nobel-price worthyness.

Exactly. This song quite literally is revolutionary. You could play it at the start of time or at the end of it. Because the only one constant fixed point in life is change it will be forever relevant. That alone is insane in it's own respect. It's quite literally a timeless song essentially by design. There is only a handful of songs that you could ever say that about.

Dylan wrote this when he was 22 years old. When I first heard it I was 12. He seemed so old and wise. Now it amazes me that this song was written by what I now consider an adolescent. When I hear this song, I am 12 years old again and he still sounds old and wise.

We certainly don't live in a perfect world but it is better now than when I was a young man in the 60's. As for Eisenhower's 'military-industrial complex' term. He was right to warn but if you think the 2020's are more militaristic than the 1960's... well you obviously weren't there when I my draft board met. Military spending 1960 = 8.9% of GDP 2022 = 3.4%. Economically, politically, socially, and scientifically, there is no comparison. 1960 loses. Ask any 70+ year old vaccinated, voting, medicare recipient, minority, woman which year she prefers.

@alileevil Жыл бұрын
@@halseytaylor9522 couple of misconceptions. In the 1960s, the US was in an arms race with the Soviet Union and the high military expenditure could be explained. But what cannot be explained is the gradual increase of military spending even after the Soviet Union collapsed. New threats seemingly emerged from nowhere. Regarding minorities, while things have improved, they still haven’t got their reparations and are still fighting for racial justice. Oh and btw most minorities are not vaccinated as they do not trust the people in charge. Not much has really changed except divorce rates, teenage pregnancies, single parents, school shootings, depression, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse. Welcome to the new world :)

Come gather 'round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'. Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin'. For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin'. Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled There's a battle outside And it is ragin'. It'll soon shake your windows And rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin'. Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is Rapidly agin'. Please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin'. The line it is drawn The curse it is cast The slow one now Will later be fast As the present now Will later be past The order is Rapidly fadin'. And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'.

It's funny, when I was younger this was a revolutionary song, now I'm older and more ground down it's a reminder to not become the people I once hated. "Don't criticise what you can't understand." I don't really understand Trans, Non-Binary and many other things, but I don't really need that understanding to be decent and accepting. I'm not going to knock someone else's Tea out of their hand because I drink coffee. "The present now will soon be past." Poetry 👌❤️

TheRickay That’s because when they recorded songs in the 60s in the studio, they would sing the whole song all the way through and then would take the best version of it and release it. It’s not like nowadays where the “artist” sings a line they record it, then they’ll sing another line record it and mix which ever lines were sung best. There was no auto tune, there was no let’s take half of this take and part of this take. There’s a great story that Al Cooper (the accordion player for “Like a Rolling Stone”) said. He was in the recording studio with Bob Dylan and they recorded the song 11 times and the studio manager released the song that we all know and love today- yet the accordion player said that on take 1 of recording, Bob Dylan nailed the song and did it so well that they didn’t even think they needed anymore takes and thought that that was it and that should have been it. He said “You don’t mess with magic and that first take WAS magic“ but he said the song they released was like take 6 or 7 and doesn’t even think it was the best version of the song. So you’re always going to hear infractions of his voice in every single one of his songs pre-80’s. That’s what makes the artists of the 60’s and 70’s amazing, authentic, real, and superior artists.
