The XD is a bit more pleasant on the ears, but a lot of it's tones can be created on other synths. The minilogue OG is a bit harsher and thinner, but is a truly unique sounding synth.

Side Chain mode is one that I overlooked for a long time, but I love it now. It is good for layering notes that have a lot of sustain, minimal filter movement. and getting clarity of the most recent note being played. The dial sets the amount of attenuation you want to give to previous notes when a new note is played. At 0 there is no attenuation and all notes are the same volume. At 100 all previous notes disappear when a new note is played. When you find a good balance you can play long and loud notes and the newest note gets the most "attention".

@Antoni Dobrzański When you increase the resonance it cuts the low end, which is super annoying. It ends up sounding quite tinny and thin, but it's still a great synth. It's capable of fuller sounds if you leave the resonance alone.

I think you’re absolutely right about the magic with the original one. I had the XD here and thought it was an update. But it wasn’t. One annoying thing was the clouding FX in most presets. But even without - it just didn’t sound celestial. So I sent the XD back and am even happier with the original. There will be nothing better in that segment. Future classic.

Did the same thing. I loved the XD. It’s a wonderful synth. But there’s truly something special about the OG. Also, the full/more versatile EG and being able to modulate the EG rate/intensity is a lot of fun.

I played with the minilogue in a store and loved it and was looking forward to picking up an XD this year. I don't think the different/missing features are enough to sway me back to an original. However, I wish they made a module version of the original. I'm limited for space and don't have a ton of room.

Minilogue OG = More comprehensive traditional analog synth including a 2 & 4 pole filter Minilogue XD = Adds a digital osc and some digital bells and whistles in exchange for limitations to the voice structure, including the loss of the 4 pole filter - Get OG if you want an analog synth that can do most everything Get XD if you want an analog digital synth hybrid and are ok with losing some things. - For me it's about if you have a comprehensive analog poly synth or not. If you don't, the XD leaves off things that are a major loss, like the 4 pole and full filter ADSR env. If you have other analog polys the XD's digital stuff can add nice things that others don't. Having that fancy digital osc is rare on a synth with analog filters, and evnen rarer on a poly. The Microfreak does but it's paraphonic making it be much more limited in how sounds can be played. I'm a little more partial to the OG myself mostly because I have an Electribe 2 that has some of Korg's weird digital oscillator types and an ESQ1 which does the digital osc with analog filter poly thing.

Nice comparison! I believed the XD made the original obsolete, but now I'm not so sure about that anymore. If I had to choose one I'd go for a XD module because I like the digital oscillator and the effects and don't have the need for yet another keyboard.

Happy to see someone diving into the world of synths. The original Minilogue was my first. Both seem to be very good choices for beginners. Although I can see the limitation of having no 3rd oscillator, and the added control over the envelope generators on the OG Minilogue lending itself to being a better initial learning tool. But you could always just not use the user oscillator on the xd and use it similarly.

I had both for a time . Had the OG when they first came out. Strings and evolving pads took much more programming time then the XD does for those type sounds. I did enjoy the the OG greatly but the 3rd osc ,user modes , and FX made the XD a completely different synth. I do not regret parting with the OG over the XD but I did wish the awesome patches I made could be imported into the XD.

Thanks for the comparison! I just had the chance to get both for a day, and to be honest, for me it was no comparison, the XD ran circles around the original. The main difference is the onboard FX, which is so good that it turns even mediocre patches into inspiring and interesting sounds. Of course you can later replace them with effects in your DAW, but you have already been inspired to make songs.

I started out with the XD and then picked up an OG (Platinum version - lovely) 2nd hand because I like the work flow and reckoned there wouldn't be too much of a learning curve - which there wasn't. I use the XD more often than the OG but there's something very special about the OG, especially building a great sounding patch from relatively limited building blocks. Adding an external reverb can make it sound incredible. If I had to keep only one I think I'd keep the OG, which is completely illogical given the additional features and great sound of the XD but there's something about the OG that I just can't put my finger on. Both are great synths but the OG would be the keeper.

@sbmphr How's the Wavestate? I snagged a Wavestation EX for $280 so I'm trying to figure out how the heck to create new patches on it. It's a great synth though, I just wish programming it was easier, and I wish the display wasn't as bright as a calculator screen. Wavestate seems to solve these issues though.

BoBeats Hey Bo is there an argument for owning both or are they too similar. I'm just looking at buying a third synthesizer already having a monologue and minilogue OG. Thank you very much Bo. And thanks for the heads up I will join the group mate

@@New_Zealand_Music so I think there are better synths to pair either of the minilogues with for more fun... BUT... They do complement eachother in a way, because as I hope my video shows they do end up sounding quite different. So its more a question of: do you want more of the same workflow or something new and fresh?

BoBeats thanks for that Bo, haven't tried both comparing them against the minilogue and monologue and I you might be right, I don't think I want to own 3 synthesizers which share the same heritage, would be nice to have more variation. Maybe I'll check out the bass station 2, now that it's been updated and you can sync it. I think I saw a bass station in one of your videos I could be wrong, do you think this would be an interesting combination. Having not tried the bass station myself. I don't want to sound too vanilla, and like yourself I love my original minilogue.

The ability to patch a full adsr to cutoff, lfo rate/intensity, and osc 2 pitch all at the same time give the original a quality of musical expressiveness lacking in the XD.

Thank you, Bo! I had been waffling back and forth on whether to get the OG or the XD. After watching this video several times, I decided to go for the OG and now a few weeks later I can say I'm still happy with my decision! The OG definitely has a slightly metallic sound that I'm not a huge fan of, but it is pretty easy to dial it out or find a way to harness it to elevate the tonal characteristics rather than just sound metallic. What I was looking for was a no-nonsense analog polysynth that wouldn't take up a lot of space, break the bank, or require a ton of fiddling and/or menu diving to create new sounds; I feel like the OG delivers on all of my needs flawlessly and I'm not looking back! I'm not missing the third oscillator that the XD might give me, but I'm definitely missing effects. Luckily I have a pretty decent pedalboard from my touring days playing guitar, and even just sending the Minilogue through the TC Electronics Hall of Fame reverb makes it sound lush and really warms it up.

Thank you for comparing the two Bo. Your knowledge of synths is impressive :D Although this is initially a close race between the original colder Minilogue which is in mono, against the XD in Stereo which sounds a bit warmer. But the effects on the XD just makes it go into lightspeed fairly quickly, imo. Thank you for two great comparisons. Where did you get the coloured knobs? thank you.

Out of the headphone jack assuming they are both set the same way, what does the stereo do over the mono? Do the differences only come out when pressing a stereo effect button on the xd or maybe the digial reverbs? Or does the sound automatically create a separated effect even when boths synths are set the same way? Cool headphones by the way, I love the HD 650
@BoBeats
@BoBeats 4 жыл бұрын
well, stereo out on the xd mainly comes into play when you use the fx. You get a much wider sound with the lush stereo reverbs and delays. Whereas original Minilogue is mono and its fx is mono.

Appreciate this comparison. Question for you... I'm interested in a simple to use, no menu diving, high quality output synth for parts in songs Im creating. My budget is up to $1000 (new or used). I should add I will take it with me to play the parts live (or at least trigger with a midi controller). What would you recommend for quality, versatility and ease of play?

Great video and comparison Bo. Thank you! I have the original Minilogue and although I would really like to be able to use the sequencer and record different layers on top of each other, like a loop pedal, this doesn't seem to be possible. Does Minilogue XD's sequencer allow this sort of functionality?

Hello, I enjoyed your video. I’ve recently bought a Minilogue XD and learning to use it. Please can I ask if the metronome sound on the XD sequencer recording on this video, is the metronome built into the synth? I’ve been trying to find a way of recording into the sequencer in real time but struggled to sync with the tempo

Original Minilogue pros: * It has an audio input. So you can use it as the third oscillator from any kind of audio source. Even from computer VST. When XD has very limited 32k multi-engine osc . Without the ability to connect external audio devices. * It has a pure analog delay effect using the second voices. When XD has only digital effects that you can apply at any DAW. (Yes, includes stereo effects too). * It has better filter (24db + 12db + hi pass filter) vs only LP 12db in XD. * It has assignable full ADSR (see video 10:10) with 3 destinations when XD has AD with only one destination. * It chipper XD pros: * Sustain pedal * Better sequencer (with visual curve automatization) * Additional CVs (only input)
@stosemcls

@Aaron Foltz You can use any audio source as a custom wave. For example, if you want to use Korg Multi-Engine as the third osc (like XD), you can connect Korg NTS-1 to your Original Minilogue via MIDI and Audio-IN.

They both make good sounds, but I was never able to get into the Korg *logue line. With most other synths I've tried, the hardware would let me do pretty much anything I could think of, even if it made no sense. But with the *logue series, it gave me fewer tools and fewer ways to connect them. Instead of trying to maximize the user's options, it seems like the *logues are more opinionated about what the user should and should not be able to do. This probably makes it a good choice for new users, since the guidance can help push them toward things which sound nice. But it may also leave people wanting more.

The Logue synths aren’t made to be able to do everything under the sun, but the way all the parameters work in tandem with each other is super inspiring. It’s a real instrument, that’s why I love the entire line so much. You can’t do it all, but it absolutely excels in what it can do. Also the sequencer is really powerful once you dive into it, and it adds a ton of possibilities.

super fantastic, really helpful video. a possibly significant tradeoff with the XD, depending on what you want to do with your synth, is that you get stereo out but no audio in. in other words, you can play your electric guitar through the original minilogue if you want to, but not through the XD (at least, not as it comes out of the box)

I’m narrowing down what synth I would like to save for and I’m looking into one of these actually! I’m going for versatility though, I want to be able to play a similar style to oneohtrix point never with the odd textures and natural sound style but I’m also a metal head and want to be able to play cinematic and epic sounds as well with the style of a band named Wintersun. I don’t know if anyone knows who these artists are but if you do and can steer me into the right direction, I would really appreciate it. I’m aware that there is gonna be effects pedals and software and pads involved to get those sounds I want but I’m wondering where to start before all that with the right synth first.
