I'd ridden and owned hotbloods and warmbloods all my life before I got my Clyde on her second birthday. So chill. She may have missed the memo she was a horse. I've also worked at draft barns with Percherons of all ages. Pretty similar deal, even the foals. They seem to come practically bombproof. Very little rattles them. I was worried my girl would make me lose my horse sense until I ended up working at a large eventing barn. Young OTTBs galore. Fortunately, I still had it. My big girl definitely spoiled me though. The big un's are often the sweetest. The ponies and minis are the real challenges. :D

Seriously? You are mad because they aren't praising the horse enough? Some people show affection in different ways other than praising, I have seen many owners that do all that baby voice praising stuff and still treat their pets badly, at least the horse is treated well 🙄

Everyone keeps pointing out stuff like "why are carriage rides a thing horses are treated so poorly" "it's animal abuse" "he's in pain because his hooves need trimming" "he's so thin" "horses should be free to run around". This horse is well looked after, first of all he is not in pain he has been trained to walk like this from a young age. Some horses enjoy working because eating all day is just completely boring for them so it's not "abuse" to make them pull a cart. Most horses generally don't run around because they're too busy eating unless they see a new horse or it's windy or lightly raining etc and because of this they can get colic and become in pain and can get obese, then it can be hard for them to walk.

oh how I wish my dad was still around. as a kid (I'm now 65) I was taken to the shows. dad could plait! many asked him to do my horse.He turned out top class show harness. drive any thing from single to six in hand and was big mates with the boys that did the shows. won many top rosettes and cups. a lost art. the sawdust is or was a well known practice. the show box at home was full of spares like canoba wax raffia grass and the many other things.yes a real past art.

I own a Percheron and a Clydesdale, and their hooves look like that. The front hooves will always pancake out like that, they are draft horses and more weight is being forced onto them. But keep in mind that it is ONLY the fronts that do that. The bigger the horse, the more they will pancake out like that. My Clydesdale is 20 hands, his are more flat in the front than my 17 handed Percheron. As for the walking, they are taught to walk that way at a young age, most of the time. My Percheron is ridden and showed western pleasure, and she doesnt pick up her feet real high like that anymore. While my Clydesdale is new under saddle and still has that high step walk about him.
@AzureHeartSong
@AzureHeartSong 9 жыл бұрын
Not true. Both my 17hh Belgian and my 19.3hh Percheron have normal looking feet. They look exactly like a smaller horses hooves, only they are bigger. They are also kept barefoot and are riding horses. The Shire in the video has Scotch Bottoms on. These are a traditional shoe and are meant to stretch the horse's foot out. Not because the horse needs it, quite the opposite is true actually, but because it causes an exaggerated leg lift which people find attractive.

8literbeater they are not overdue for any trim Clydesdale tend to have longer feet then other breds. My friend who is a vet and the farrier we use says they look fine it is the owners prefrence but that length is very common on that bred. those horses are treated like kings and very well cared for. I saw them in person so i would know

Gingersnap27239 I may not know much but I'm pretty sure the video is about a SHIRE not a Clydesdale and I know plenty well they arnt the same thing. Just because their both draft horses doesn't mean they are the same thing. Along with that what does any of this have to do with a Clydesdale

I am genuinely amazed and impressed by the amount of Farriers on the internet. Not to mention the surprising number of heavy horse experts. How lucky are these horse owners, there they were thinking they had a Shire who was well cared for. But it turns out they have a clydesdale with overgrown toenails. Great work internet!! You've saved the day again.

EVERYONE COMMENTING ABOUT HIS FEET READ BELOW Horses that pull brewery carts etc around are more than likely walking on Tarmac roads and other rough surfaces His shoes are made special to ensure his feet don't wear down because if he was to wear normal shoes they would wear down super fast , They protect his feet and are a lot thicker and heavy duty than normal shoes , hope this helped x

Initially, I/we wanted another Morgan to be with our 4 month old Morgan filly but Olivia bonded with me instantly. Both are now 8 years old and they are best buddies despite their size differences.

I've never seen healthy hooves that long on a horse, not even a shire, and there are two shires at the stable I go to. They're so long they're starting to curl upwards! Sure, their hooves are bigger and wider than a warmblood's, but those look outrageous! He is walking very unnaturally, especially with his hind legs. It could either be the long hooves or the impact shock to the joints from walking with shoes on a hard concrete floor. The hooves can't cushion and take the impact like they are meant to when the horse has shoes on.

Exactly why, if and when I get a horse, I won't be using shoes.
@KaregoAt
@KaregoAt 9 жыл бұрын
Fatrick Stare Good to hear :) There's really no need for shoes, and if you need extra protection or traction for different terrains or for winter, you can just use Easyboots or something like that. They allow for movement in the hoof and still protect it and provide grip when needed.
@bri8482
@bri8482 9 жыл бұрын
Most draft horses wear special shoes to create a square shaped hoof. It is found in pulling and shoe drafts not so much riding drafts. It's believed to help their traction when they worked on dirt roads. And not all shoes are bad. Many horses need them due to a conformation fault or injury all obviously human error but they do help the horse and only hinder them when not done correctly. And he is walking weird because it seems to have a sickled hock and they are also trained to have an exaggerated gait. But the poor horses at your barn need some urgent care if they are curling up thats just not healthy no matter what the breed.
@KaregoAt
@KaregoAt 9 жыл бұрын
+Hedgehog Hugger I was talking about the horse in the video, his hooves are starting to curl. The horses at my stable both have very healthy hooves.
@AzureHeartSong
@AzureHeartSong 9 жыл бұрын
They are called Scotch Bottoms and they were originally designed to give the pulling horses a bigger surface area so they would be able to walk over snow or marsh ground easier. However, modern day drafts wear them for 2 reasons. They are traditional and they force the horse to walk with exaggerated movements. Drafts in show are shod like this as a rule. It's pointless, damaging, and stupid in my opinion. I ride a Belgian draft horse and she is kept barefoot and trimmed accordingly. She is a capable athlete and loves to run. None of that would be true if I forced her to wear Scotch Bottoms.

its not to do with the breed but what they do agricultural horses or cart horses often wear longer shoes ...some do some don't ..i've only ridden and cared for shires that were riding horses only so it's not something i know about so much ...but it's to with traction and also protecting their partners feet (like side by side) horses are shod for their hooves and the type of work they do. If he was to be ridden he would need a hoof make over! And they can be ridden and his hooves would change gradually for the work he does now the shape doesn't over flex the tendons ..but with other work it might ...this is why you need really really professional farriers

magnificent but i thouight tail docking was banned, or is it only for dogs? would seem a horse needs his tail even MORE to keep the flies off ..
@sfwarhawk

Big horses, such as Clydesdales, Shires, and Draught Horses get their tails docked because the owners do not want the tail getting stuck in the machinery or other stuff that the horse is carrying or pulling.

What I find interesting is the way you groomed and tacked up your horse. When I was driving horses, I put the collar on first, then the saddle, then the britching, then the hames. I would throw the tugs over its back until it was time to hook up. After my horse was harnessed, I'd plait or braid the mane. Grooming took place before the harness was put on, obviously. Our horses did not wear Scotch Bottoms either. They were shod normally with 2 toe clips.

I know everyone in the comments is saying this but if you don't get his hooves trimmed soon then you could be seriously damaging his feet and ability to walk.

Could somebody educate me on what sort of shoe Luis may be wearing, and why it causes his hoof to look ingrown? Also, does it have something to do with him picking his feet up high?

No...they lift their hooves that way because they are walking on their heels, will trip over the toe and the horses (shire) hooves are grown that way for an exaggerated action...same as Tennessee walking horses are made to have elongated toes. It ruins them eventually.

His feet are extremely flat, poor boy... needs a good farrier to do some corrective work there. The strain on his fetlock joints must be massive, especially at his size.

Working Drafts have a different style of feet work done. The splayed wall helps them grip the ground better when pulling heavy loads on non-hard surfaces(much like a camels toes splay on sand). So.. his feet are fine.

Draft horses have a different style of hoof. They're more bulky and and long for gripping purposes.
