Initially, I had absolutely no interest in this video; 20 seconds later, I was hooked! I loved your "quick" sketch that was so accurate as a mechanical blueprint, and your craftsmanship is amazing. I loved this video. Thanks. DD

I could hear you much better in this video. Thanks for addressing the vocal volume. Awl looks pretty good. Maybe a square awl next? They work great for poking and for drilling points into wood for a better mark prior to drilling, screwing, or nailing. Just a little wrist twist and you're all marked. Square awls work well for plastics and leather as well.

Very nice, I really like the way you used the bolt for the metal shaft. Mmmmm something to make on a rainy day but alas I don't have a lath. Time to improvise and over come
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 5 жыл бұрын
Do you have a drill press? If yes, then you are 80% of the way to having a lathe. Loads of videos out there on using a drill press for or making a lathe. BTW, a lathe and lathe tools will do the brass too. Carbide lathe tools are slightly better with the brass, but HSS will cut/scrape brass beautifully.

Great design. Love your idea using the long bolt. I had made an awl similar but not quite as nice. Can you recommend how to resharpen the point? I can't figure a way yet to get it spinning to file or honing stone. Just came across your channel and it looks great. Thanks.

Genuinely beautiful project with a wonderfully documented process. One question though: How much larger should the diameter of the wood be than the ferrule which it accepts?
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, I made the wood diameter slightly larger (1/64") than the inside of the ferrule. It is threaded so one could screw it on instead of heating it the way I did. Thanks for watching! Bob

Very nice looking awl. Your other one looks quite unwieldy by comparison, especially for fine marking. Stainless is a good choice for the job too, rather than tool steel.
