Most players with these skills seem to opt for saxophone or clarinet- instruments that project easier and are a little more malleable. You are correct though! There is no doubt that this slaps.

@@XanDubs I've always been a huge fan of the larger woodwinds (especially double reeded) as they have a more relaxed timbre than most brass instruments, which fits some styles of jazz like a glove. Oboe and Bassoon especially.

To be fare, if they made the bassoon any bigger, the instrument would likely have a different tuning.

Wow, there is actual language and this bassoonist definitely has a “jazz tone”. His sound is spread out and projects with a warm tone. You can definitely hear jazz articulation and shaping in his phrases, you can even hear doodn tonguing and ghost notes. Bassoon is definitely a genuine serious jazz instrument that shouldn’t be looked down upon.

Somewhere in my wanderings I came across some jazz viola. As someone who's always had more of a soft spot for strings and winds than for brass and keyboard instruments it put me in mind of assembling a brassless, keyless big band, akin to how Philip Glass removed the brass and percussion sections from the orchestra when he wrote his opera "Satyagraha."
