Remaining 5% gang! I wanted to personally thank you for this video. As a small KZbin creator focused on DnD, I've found that the high energy, or at least highly edited content, does bring in more viewership. But like you said, I don't naturally go that fast or that hard. So I include slow chapter breaks, slowing my verbal tempo and doing videos that are just talking head to camera. That balance makes it more sustainable, especially with a full time job! Still learning that balance though. Excited to see what you do next with the job change!

I started watching your videos just before DMing my first module game of Wild Beyond the Witchlight. I need to preface this by explaining that we use discord for voice and in the server I made I gave each player a character journal to do whatever they wish with. Anytime we can't have a session I propose an optional writing prompt for my players to explore backstory and other fun activities. This video has encouraged me to give them the prompt "What would you like to see happen during our adventure? How do you enjoy DnD? As a player what are your strengths and weaknesses?" I try to communicate as transparently as I can as a DM and I thought this video was super helpful to help guide me to not only focus on my player's characters but my players as well. Thanks Bob!!

I usually don't find silences awkward. I thoroughly enjoy them! Once, I drove my parents in law with my wife (then, girlfriend) to a mall. And while her dad and I looked for a parking place, she and her mother left the car to go seeking what they were going to buy, in order to gain some time. It took us like 3 minutes in which her dad and I remained completely silent, before we found where to park. Later that night, I told my girlfriend: "Honey, I think your dad and I made such a connection! It was so awesome!".

As for my style of GMing I mosty fall back to me routs of playing pretend with my friends and ask the players "What do you what to do?" And I find my fun building a world as resaults of my players actions but it normaly takes having a big world... Which I play ethier with the guys/randos at my local table top shop or just a solo RPG show and while I'm not flashy I make the mostly 8player involded in the world with my main issues with getting to everyone... Still I know I can hold 1 guys attention for atleast 1 hour on livestream just playtesting my game in a solo RPG show... Mainly by not hiding the fact everything is off the cuff and inprove and is just to test balance or a new rule... Still this is a great discustion to have thanks for the video!

I personally prefer this format a lot of the time. It makes it easier to listen while at work as I don't have my attention being pulled away from... Well, work. It also tends to lean towards longer form content and I'm in the KZbin minority who LOVES longer, well written, highly thought out videos.

Ill see if I can apply this in my current home game. I've been struggling to hold the party's attention for some time now, and I followed along with what most people tend to say. You know, the usual of "make the game around your players, give them multiple options for quests and outcomes, ask them what they want in their game" etc etc, and even though each of them says they love the game, I can rarely hold their attention for more than 5 minutes before one or two starts a conversation, starts floating over to the couch, or stuffs their face in an art book. Just feels like they don't actually come to play d&d and playing with a table of turned down heads and one enthusiastic sorcerer is starting to get pretty depressing. I think I've been pretty genuine in my dming but who knows
@boskone2 жыл бұрын
I gotta admit that I like simple, straightforward videos because I generally don't watch most of the video. I listen to it while doing something else, then look down at the screen when something is said which seems to require visual aid. I don't sit there and give it my undivided attention for the full duration. I would liken it to D&D. You don't always need a full-up, detailed map with minis. Sometimes just describing it, or scratching a quick map so as to avoid constantly re-describing a location, is both narratively sufficient and advantageous from the perspective of actually playing the game.

Although there are parallels and transferable skills, there are significant diffrerences in a DM holding player's attention during a game (live), holding player attention during a game (using online tools), and a presenter trying to hold viewer attention during a video about games. I would be most interested in a discussion about expected differences between live and online play - and how to make the best of what each situation offers.

Your channel has been helping me get back into being a DM quite a lot, and is one of the only D&D advice channels that I'm subscribed to. Your videos are informative, entertaining, peaceful, and all the advice you give is kind, useful, and enthusiastic. I prefer a less overwhelming style as opposed to the fast, loud, and overly energetic style which you mentioned in this video. Your authenticity is refreshing, and it enhances the impact of the messages and education you impart through your videos. Hell yeah! Glad to see you coming to the scene full time. You reminded me of Matt Colville before you ever mentioned Matt Colville. So many D&D resources online are about "fixing" things - as if D&D is broken. I think the "how to fix" D&D content can really lead DMs astray and get them in a negative mindset, fixing problems that aren't present at their table. You, Matt, Satine, and Dael talk about D&D with positivity and wonderment. And that's why I subscribed. Keep being yourself, you are most definitely on the right path.
@BobWorldBuilder2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, I've definitely slipped into the "fixing" approach before, and I'll say that it really works on titles on thumbnails, but I definitely aim to present my ideas in the videos just as fun things you could try, rather than saying I somehow came up with a better idea than a team of game designers :P

First, congratulations! Odd aside: is it possible for you to combine some of your outdoor education stuff with this? Your videos about travel etc were really engaging because I could tell you really enjoy being outside and sharing nature with people. A small series on what different natural environments are like could let you take advantage of your nature education skills and bring something unique and super interesting to the audience. Plus - as a formerly rural Canadian I can talk Boreal forest or Prairie issues or rugged coastlines with cliffs or cold beaches, but I have a hard time describing swamps or warm beaches or any of the other environments further south. From my pov, knowing what that stuff feels and looks (or even is!) so I can describe it in a real way would be very valuable.

it's really important for presenters, video creators and DMs to realise that not everyone on the internet or playing has the attention span of a gnat(!). some people (maybe especially neurodiverse people like myself) find the constant jumpiness of videos from people like DnDShorts (awesome though he is) almost over-stimulating and it becomes hard to take in his message. appreciating your gentle and absorbing presentation style bob! it takes time to inspire wonder and curiosity...

I shared your passion for outdoor education and was a member of AEE, Association of Experiential Education, for about 8 years. This was from the early 90s until 2001. I've been a D&D player since 77, and I found out working with kids on initiatives and tasks in the outdoors really improved my game by describing the expressions, emotions, frustrations, excitement, and environments for npcs or players during a game. I could describe npcs, monsters, and beings that connected better because I could convey emotional content in a better way that connected with the players better. Excellent video with great incite and purposes!

You're one of my favorite d&d content creators on KZbin, looking forward to more videos to come!

I only found your channel recently, but I really do love what you make. Your genuine, calm, and human approach is refreshing compared to a lot of the jump cut/sound effect riddled KZbin I see now. Your content has already made me a better DM, and as an experienced DM struggling to keep the attention of a new player, this video in particular will be great for me I’m sure. Thanks for everything you do, and congrats on being able to make this your full time thing!

Welcome aboard! Yeah, I like producing a videos in a variety of styles, but I ignored the slower-pace style for too long. This will gradually become more common again for me. Thanks for your encouragement! :)

I've just started considering DMing, and I'm not very confident about it. But videos like yours have really been helping. Thanks!

You can do it! If you just aim to keep the game simple and fun for everyone, it clears away a lot of the other "advice" you'll see about running the game

I see what you did there. In all seriousness, Bob: This was an exceptional video lesson. Thank you for sharing your feelings, opening up, and helping us all connect the dots in our own games and lives. You continue to surprise me with great content and lessons that apply to so much more than just D&D and RPGs in general. And, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Please keep doing what you're doing for the community!!! 💜

I hope you take this as a compliment, but you are like the bob ross of DND youtubers. Your videos are always calming to watch. Others feel really in my face and really loud about everything.

I think keeping your players attention really depends on the group you are working with. High energy and constant action may be suitable for those with lower attention spans but for most D&D players this is not quite as important since if you are patient enough to read through the rules in the book and create an entire character from scratch then 4 seconds of silence is likely not to be any sort of problem at all. That being said, a good DM should try to not keep their players waiting unnecessarily but this is something that requires a few DM tricks to prevent things from getting bogged down. For one, if as the DM you don't know the rule for something usually you can make a call and let the group know that you will look up the rule after the session for everyone. Having players roll dice is a simple way to get players busy doing something while you as the DM can make other preparations "everyone give me a perception check". Another effective method is to get players to describe what their characters are doing. Actually when I hear about flashy attention grabbing videoes on how to make the most powerful character within the rules then the first thing I think of is an audience of very young people since I think most older mature players would just find that annoying.

Great video Bob! Bringing up the audience watch time was a clever way of attatching the subject matter to the act of watching the video itself. Although I have to say I usually dislike when videos bring watch time up as a way to make me feel obliged to keep watching, so I hope it doesn't become a running gag in future videos.
@BobWorldBuilder2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And yeah it just made sense for this subject, so I don't have plans to talk about it in other videos

The reason you've kept my attention for last few years is that you prioritise the fun in the game. If its not fun then why would we play in the first place?

First off, congrats to you and Grace. I always get anxious when I see a cute couple that vibes on KZbin; I've been rooting for you guys to seal the deal! Second, I think this may be the video that gets me to become a Patron. Authenticity is absolutely key to meaningful experiences, I could feel it here my dude. You really are the Bob Ross of DND.
