I'm new to chicken ownership. I have also been a wild bird feeder and identifier especially since buying a farm very close to the Mississippi River. We get migrating birds from the southern tip of South America here for the spring mating season. My heart is so hurting now that I have to stop that because my birds just infested my 8 chickens. One of them has died and it was a horrific slow death because I didn't know what it was or how to treat it. Thank you so much for this video on his taught us an immense amount of how to protect our rooster and remaining for hens! With all the research we've done, even though I was leaning towards prefering my oils and garlic, they just can't compare to this simple and eradicating solution. Thank you thank you thank you thank you so much you 2! We're very grateful! We're buying it online today from a company we found the cheapest so far at 150.00.

I've never had an issue with chicken lice (thank heavens), but my go-to's for mites are diatomaceous earth and neem oil. I mix the neem with a quarter cup of Apple Cider vinegar with a quarter cup of vegetable glycerine to (prevent separation) in a 500ml spray bottle with very hot water. Spray the living crap out of the coop, let it dry, then dust the coop with DE. Had an infestation a year ago after adopting 3 girls from a small hobby farm. It may seem like overkill with using both DE and neem, but we haven't seen one mite ever since.😊

I believe you saved my chickens. We had a family of mice move into our chicken yard and they gave almost our whole flock lice. We spent all day yesterday cleaning and spraying the coop down, and wrangled all twenty chickens to spray them with the Elector PSP and today it was a brand new flock. Behavior was calm. Preening was down. Everyone was energenic for food and not as much squabbling and feather pecking. Have you ever had lice that survived this treatment? First time I used it so I worry if I missed any. We had pretty drenched chickens and a drenched chicken holder (my husband😄), so hopefully they are all dead. I am so thankful they seem to have relief! Thank you so much.

@usernamedaniedmrg2 жыл бұрын
I've found plain wood ash works really well too Throw a big bucket in the area your chicken takes a dust bath and they'll do it themselves The chickens really like taking a bath in ashes anyway I usually just take a whole bunch of pine shavings in a clean fire pit and set it on fire and use the ash from that

We always used nicotine miticide/pesticide because it is highly effective and all natural. It is organic and extracted from tobacco, so there are no petrochemicals at all. It's applied to the roosts and nesting boxes but not directly to the chickens. You don't want skin contact either. Regular annual treatment is required for all treatments as wild birds can bring the pests back. Good to see you found another effective treatment. 👍

👍Good info. Thank you. We’ve been fortunate. We use lots of diatomaceous earth & redwood shavings in the chicken house. The older hens teach the chicks to avoid eating the wood pieces. Their coop smells good & they have no bugs. Plus we provide a plastic tub with the powder (diatomaceous earth - Amazon) so the hens can give themselves a nice dust bath. It’s like tiny razor sharp particles that cut up the tiny blood sucking insects. We even put some mixed in with their food. Once you get the infestation under control keep it away with diatomaceous earth.

Concentrated Liquid Spinosad either in the garden center, farm or feed store. Dog fleas and ticks, ratio 1:13 add to something like gravy. Once a month. Chicken lice and coop spray. Ratio: 1tbs per 2 quarts of water. This stuff is alive and is temperature sensitive. Mix with tepid water only. Cannot use in the coop or on poultry when temps are 85 to 90 degrees or higher. Light kills it. Apply it at sunset for greater efficacy. In the coop, close the door so it will be dark or apply at sunset. This also kills human lice AND nits in one shot. Fair warning: Over use or long term use can contribute to ecological immunity. It’s a bacteria, after all. I love the stuff!

MaryAnne Rigo. They can’t survive long term, but they can survive for at least a week without the chicken and as I say they bite you and the itch seems to last forever, depending on how sensitive you are to the bite. You have to be careful not to reintroduce them, so that means not even patting the chickens if it is a bad infestation. The mites then stay in your house until they die off. You can see them running across your screens of your iPad or mobile phones sometimes. (The light seems to attract them). We are talking about something not much bigger than the size of a full stop “.” Remember, so they are hard to find, until they bite you.

Welcome thanks for watching! ❤️ I also could not find much information on Ducks but what I did find is waterfowl are not prone to lice infestation. Their thick feathers and down and so much activity in water repel them. We treated our entire flock of chickens and not our 12 ducks who share the same coop and we are still lice free. It’s been over a year so it looks like the ducks didn’t have any lice or the chickens would have surely had a relapse and gotten lice again. I think it’s safe to say you do not need to treat your 2 ducks, just the chickens. Hope this helps

Blend a few cloves of garlic in some water, strain it and pour liquid into a spray bottle and do the same thing. Spray the chickens and the coops and roosting bars. It’ll be fun trying to treat the girls as our roo is very protective of them despite being the newest member, but I’m desperate to help my poor babies before they end up getting sick. I’m not sure how severe it is as this is my first ever time dealing with lice. A few have dirty vents so I’ll Trim their feathers first. I raise Hawaiian wild chickens, I so wish it was that easy for me. My best defense has been diatomaceous earth. I use it in there feed as well, so when I broadcast the feed it goes on the ground, and the dust drifts into there body. This also takes care of worms. Also use Neem as a spray to clean with, it also does a good job of killing mites and lice, but does not kill the eggs, and has to be reapplied. Currently in the fifth, to sixth generations and they are becoming more trusting. Many have befriended me. So hopeful over time they can become more tame. They are beautiful birds, and truly worth preserving.

Katie, dontcha just love (sarcasm!) those who pass on chickens with parasites?!? Even my sister told me to do this, get rid of the headache by giving them (the girls) to someone else (implying I don’t tell the new owners as to why)! I think the former owners of mine didn’t understand their (now mine) chickens had them because they just overall neglected them & didn’t seem to be much interested/cued into them. Upon deep cleaning the coop (they hadn’t cleaned at all for like 6 mos!) after ‘inheriting’ them, I found in an obscure location a pile of 49 eggs!!! And that was after prying a brooder off 21 eggs! (Btw, when I took that hen out of the laying box, concerned she wasn’t eating or drinking, & brought her out to enjoy treats with the others, she never went back to doing it! She protested at 1st [pecking me if I got near her], but once I removed her, no longer a problem ever again. I was surprised how immediately that worked! But I probably have to give most the credit to the treats - mealworms & frequent fresh watermelon when it was so blazing hot last summer! 😉)

So after treating the chickens and their coop, what can I use to prevent another infestation? Should I mix something in their dust bath?
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
The best way to prevent an infestation is to not introduce any new hens that are contaminated. It’s usually spread from buying older hens from another farm to add to your flock. Wild birds can spread but there is less exposure so less likely. Hens dust bathe to natural repel pests and having a dust bath area option always available to them is the best preventative. So if a rainy muddy season, try to make your own dust bath area for them always available. Diatomaceous Earth is a good preventative but can be dangerous to their sensitive respiratory systems. Wood ash is the best thing you can add to their dust bath, they absolutely love it

Can you use this as a preventative method? Also can you use this as a preventative if you use the deep litter method for compost? Can it kill the microbes in the bedding if you just spray the chickens?

@BockBockBouquet3 жыл бұрын
Yes it can! After a foot soak I would smother the legs in Vaseline or coconut oil to finish off the scaly leg mites and suffocate them

Good morning, I live in Greece, I have a small hen house with a few hens. The issue is that I have been dealing with lice in the hens here for a long time, going back to two years, and I am really tired and I want something permanent, something active, something cheaper. That is why I wanted to ask you where I could find this product?

Hello! Can you tell me if i need to treat my ducks as well? They share a coop with my chickens.... i am concerned because i live on a lake which my ducks use every day.
@AngelaQuirion Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video; You LITERALLY saved my girls. That being said I've found an even better natural treatment that doesn't involve any chemicals or sweat off your back and I figured I'd share with you: Androlaelaps casalis! Predator mites are the #1 treatment I've tried so far! You simply order the predatory (they come in a big plastic tube) and you release them into your chicken's sleeping quarters. The predatory mites are so tiny and look almost microscopic,but they won't hurt you and they won't hurt your chickens. When they are done eating all of the red mites and northern fowl mites, they will simply cannibalize each other or move on to eat more mice somewhere else. They are amazing and I hope you try this with your hennies if you get another break out ❤️

Thank you so much for the information it was extremely helpful, but after spraying my coop should I put down the DE as well, and will I haft to spray my entire chicken yard with the psp?
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Are you dealing with lice or mites? If lice they live on the bird. If mites it would be a good idea to spray the poultry housing very well. The yard shouldn’t have mites, they like to hide in the coop walls roosts and nests. DE is a great preventative just be careful to not inhale it when airborne, good idea to wear a mask when putting down

You're information is great, you have actually used and tested the stuff, you're demonstration is great, you vocalize/pronounce words very clearly and speak loud enough to be heard, and your flock is just gorgeous!!! Very well done!!! I definitely subbed, liked and rang the bell!!!

Great video. I am currently battling a mite problem and I am going to use elector psp. It’s shipping now. If the mites get on you while cleaning or treating do they stay on you? Are they host specific? Do you have to worry about them hitching a ride into your house etc? Thank you!
@BockBockBouquet3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes they are host specific, but can live off a feeding for months. They can bite you but will not live off you. They could hitch a ride in your house but will not survive long term. Not to scare you! Make sure you treat your coop very well and get every nook and cranny where they hide

The best treatment for scaley leg is messy and annoying but dip their legs in cheap vegetable oil every couple days for 2 weeks. They will get so dirty but it is worth it and very effective. Maybe do it at night before bed. Just pour in a big bowl or bucket and dip their legs one by one and set them back on their roost bars

@sweaterdoll2 ай бұрын
How soon before treating chickens can you mix the solution. I've heard you can't store it once mixed but I don't know how long it will be okay in the spray bottle. I want to clean the coop in the Kate afternoon, but didn't want to treat the hens until they were roosted for the night so they'd be more calm. Can I mix it and use it within a few hours?
@BockBockBouquet2 ай бұрын
I can’t say for sure but I would think that would be totally fine! As long as it’s for multiple days or week it may lose potency or degrade with the sun or elements

Lol I’m sure you’ll find the right product that works for you and your flock. Dipping is also an option with Spinosad (elector psp) but there are other insecticides that will kill lice and mites. We love the elector because it kills the lice and mites eggs and no retreatment to wait for the lice to hatch in 2 weeks

Have you noticed a loss in effectiveness after having it for awhile? I see it doesn't have an expiration but I've heard people talk about the shelf life and that it discolors and less effective after a year or two.

Thanks for tuning in! Our chicken coop was custom made to be 5x6' and fits 18-22 chickesn, I swear sometimes there is 8 or 9 of them bundled up on one roost bar (even though there is 3 available). I treated my hens today after receiving the 9 ml bottle of Elector PSP. I needed to know how long the solution will be viable after mixing - hours? a couple of days? - in case I couldn't get all the birds done by myself. So I called ValleyVet who sells it and they had me talk to the vet, herself. She was amazing! Turns out, as long as it is out of sunlight, it will last 24 hours once mixed with water. Also I asked about this "one-time application" that every KZbin chicken lady is advocating and the vet said that is NOT true. The directions clearly state the treatment has to be repeated in 7-10 days, although she recommended 14 days. Still, I did some research in scientific studies and there is some indication it works as an ovicide (kills eggs) but not 100% of the time; only about 63% of eggs were consistently destroyed. The problem is that the developing insect inside the egg doesn't have a nervous system yet and the bacteria affects its nervous system, so there's some distinct moment the bacteria has to come into contact with the insect as it develops. Anyway, it's not 100% or one-time only. Anyway, I thought folks would want to know. Normally use coconut oil to repel and destroy lice AND the eggs, and it works a charm annually on the few that get it while foraging on an acre around wild birds and their lice, but this summer was super hot and humid so the hens been lying around more which made it more difficult to control. Coconut oil is the only thing that actually breaks down and destroys and eggs of both mites and lice. It's the caprylic acid in it. Also continues to repel them and soothes their skin and promotes healing.
