" The day Buddha died, in the morning he gathered his people, the way you are here; perhaps it was just the same kind of morning. Buddha every day talked to his disciples, but that was a special day because he said, “Today I am going to die. I have been hearing the steps of death for a few days; now they have reached very close and it is only a question of a few hours. So if you have any question to ask, ask, because I am not going to come again - this is my last death. The wheel of life and death is going to stop for me. “So don’t feel embarrassed even if your question is stupid; otherwise later on you will always feel sad that Buddha was available, a man of total awareness, and still you could not gather courage to ask the question.” It is not that there were not questions in peoples’ minds - they are always there. Just as leaves grow on trees, questions grow in the mind. But at the moment when the master is going to die, nobody was going to harass him. For forty-two years he has been answering their questions, and if in forty-two years your questions are not solved, what is the point of torturing the old man who is going to die? Nobody asked. His closest companion and caretaker, Ananda, said, “Bante” - Bante is Pali for Bhagwan - “we don’t have any questions. You have answered all our questions thousands of times, and we go on asking the same questions, phrasing them differently…. At this moment we would like to just sit silently with you.” Buddha said, “That’s good, because death has reached very close. So you allow me to die.” There were tears, people were sobbing…. They have loved this man their whole life, and it is very rare - once in thousands of years such a man comes into the world and rises to such heights of consciousness, love, blissfulness. And they were also crying and weeping that tomorrow morning all that they had - a master - would not be there. And they have been stupid, they have not learned anything. Buddha said, “I will be dying in four stages. First, I will close my eyes and remove myself from the body. In the second step I will remove myself from the mechanism of the mind. In the third step I will remove myself from the world of feelings, the heart. And in the fourth step, the dewdrop will fall into the ocean.” A man of awareness does not die in a coma. He can even give you a description of how the death is going to happen. Buddha closed his eyes. At that very moment a man came running from the town nearby, and he said, “I have just heard that Buddha is dying - and I have a question. I know I am an idiot. For forty-two years he has been passing through my village, but there was always something holding me back. A customer would come to the shop and I would say, ‘Buddha is always available - tomorrow I can go to see him. But this customer may not come tomorrow. He needs things now. He will go to another shop - and nobody wants to lose customers.’ Sometimes there were friends and we had met after years, and I would say, ‘I can go to Buddha anytime, but these friends have come to see me after many years; it does not look right to leave them and go to Buddha.’ And so on and so forth. Sometimes it was a marriage, sometimes it was a party…. But this morning I heard that Buddha is going to die - I had to close the shop. “My wife was shouting, my children were asking, ‘What is the point? - you had just opened, and you are closing!’ I did not hear anybody, there was no time left, there was no time to answer all their questions. I said, ‘When I come back I will explain. Just right now get out of the way and let me go!’ So I have come with the question.” Ananda said, “But you are a little late. We have given our permission that the master can disappear into the whole, and he has already entered the first stage. So please forgive us, it is not our fault. Forty-two years you have postponed; now wait a few thousand years more. When another Buddha appears, another enlightened man, then don’t be so foolish.” But Buddha opened his eyes. He said, “Ananda, this will be a condemnation for me - that a man had come thirsty, and I was still alive and I could not quench his thirst. I can delay death a little bit, but his question has to be answered; otherwise the poor fellow will feel guilty his whole life.” A conscious man dies in a totally conscious way, step by step. And if he wants to return before he has taken the fourth step, he can come back. His death is simply dropping the body, the mind, the heart, and finally, the individual center, into the universal whole. Each thing is perfectly done in alertness."

His soul left Earth and went to nirvana, aka the Pure Land, aka 極樂世界。There, there is no evil like on Earth, and life is much better. That is the real reason to follow Buddha. As a black girl from the Caribbean, Christianity was all I knew. As I got older I started to question things, found myself going down a rabbit hole…a spiritual journey. Of all the religions/doctrines/philosophies I have dabbled into, I can say that, the teachings of Gautama Buddha has transformed my life in a very profound way. Even if I never become Buddhist, I am so grateful that I came across the knowledge & I hope to share the principles of Buddha with my fellow Caribbean family and friends. Peace and Love to all 💞

@hungdiepnguyen6212 Hmm..Couldn't understand what your point is. Yes, you are right in the sense that Buddha said that teachings are vehicles to find the truth but not the truth themselves. We must just use them to support our efforts to find the ultimate truth. He isn't necessarily referring to a superhuman entity. In fact, rationally speaking, we can never be sure that a never-changing infinite entity actually exists. Even if such an entity exists, it could be the limitation of the human mind to apply only those qualities that we, humans consider to be greatest such as wisdom, power, etc to God, which are strongly subjective and not absolute. And yes, salvation doesn't arise from believing fairy tales 😄 it's a journey on its own.

I have been to Kushinagar so many time. My father was posted at Gorakhpur. For 4 years we use to go to Kushinagar often. I was pretty young...started going there when i was 5 and last visit was when i was 10 years of age. I wasn't aware of Kushinagar being the place where Buddha died. I remember visiting the chamber where statue of Buddha in parinibbana posture. I don't know why but it use to evoke such fear and uncomfortableness in me. I couldn't wait to get out of the chamber. I also remember there was a place right behind the chamber, an open courtyard, where lots of Buddha statues were kept. There was a statue of Buddha sitting in lotus position which was placed in beautiful stone carved chamber. It made me feel so calm and peaceful.

His stomach pains after consuming 'sukara-maddava' shows us two things: 1. The body, even that of one who has attained Nirvana, has to go through its own cycle -- birth, growth, aging and death. The fact that the pain that Lord Buddha suffered was recorded and transmitted to us means that He wanted all of us to know and accept this truth. 2. Lord Buddha accepted the meal that was lovingly prepared and offered to him by a poor cobbler (Chunda), knowing fully well that it would cause Him pain and death. That is a lesson as important as, maybe more important than, any of his sermons -- for all His devotees and followers.

There are versions of this story where Lord Buddha self-immolated himself rather than being cremated. The relics were diamonds taken to various locations. One diamond is in the Hong Kong Monastery. Very beautiful.

The Buddha did not die for he lives on in all sentient beings as Buddha nature. Each one of you has the seed of the Buddha within you and the potential to realize enlightenment in your lifetime. The Buddha made this clear to all in the Nirvana Sutra. May you all have oneness with the Three Jewels.

@tan5440
@tan5440 2 жыл бұрын
He didn't deny the existence of gods. Then why there is mention of gods coming to visit him at night to ask questions and clear their doubts in almost every sermon? He said that going after a God, can never help you to attain Nibhana, redeeming your self from the illusion called life. I wonder why so many non-buddists make so much assumptions about Buddha even without studying it properly. We never assume anything about Jesus or other religious leaders because honestly we don't know about them and didn't actually feel the slightest need to do so after studying Buddhism. But as Buddha said, true Buddhists can never disgrace another religion. So we respect all the religious leaders for their efforts to make people good and kind.

Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you. To come back to the topic. I have identified all the places Buddha stops in his Mahaparinirvana story. Please view the video, 'Mahaparinirvana story, Buddha's Last Journey'.

As a Hindu, Buddha is the highest order of human existence for me along side Shree Krishna and Shree Rama- maybe a reason why we Hindus consider him to be one of the 10 avataras of Lord Vishnu.
@tan5440
@tan5440 2 жыл бұрын
Hindus did that to destroy pure Buddhism. Buddha is not an avatar of anyone. Some say thaat Krishna and Vishnu are avatars of Mara, the mightiest God who controls the world and makes sure the living beings are bonded to this illusion called life and world. However I am not sure about that.

@@tan5440 you should shut your mouth when unsure of things. Buddha never created any separate religion- all he did was rid Hinduism of it's social evils, and secondly had we Hindus wanted to destroy Buddhism, it'd have been much earlier not the late 7-8th century. Third of all Hindus have assimilated the good of all things, never shying away from reforming and remoulding- we are not ones to dishonor any thought- which is why we've had 11 different schools of thought, 5 heterodox and 6 orthodox with sub divisions of their own and yet here we are- modern yet steeped in our glorious and the only eternal culture.
