I would say this is a gen z movie but I don't think this group of friends is as toxic as it is because of the internet at all. They are genuine narcissists, most gen z kids aren't narcissistic coked out party kids, there is a lot of self centered behavior in gen z but there's a difference between being generally self centered and being a genuine narcissist who is incapable of real empathy and will do manipulative things to get validation or is incapable of acknowledging their behavior when confronted with it. It's a gen z movie because everyone knows someone like this sure, but most healthy people don't seek to be with pervasively toxic groups like this
@elisabethschmerzler963 Жыл бұрын
I definitely agree. People like these characters have existed for decades, they’re just wearing Gen Z faces now. The internet and social media has definitely helped boost their presence and impact but isn’t the sole cause of such personalities. I feel like a lot of people don’t mention the big fact that their wealth definitely has something to do with their narcissism and behavior. Movies before this have shown a rich friend group who is actually extremely toxic, this cast just happens to have cell phones and social media, which may make their situation all the more extreme

(Spoilers) Other than technology, I feel like the movie had a lot to say about toxic masculinity and how it can negatively affect everybody. Pete's character (the embodiment of a toxic, insecure male) was the catalyst for the entire movie and the subsequent deaths because he just wanted to show up another dude. Lee Pace's character was a little weird but he never sunk to Pete's level, and was ultimately what I believe to be a potrayal of positive masculinity because he had boundaries and was never rude or sleazy to the other women. But because of the society we live in, the women were automatically wary of him because he was a ~man~ that they didn't really know, and had to grasp at straws for reasons to distrust him after the first death. Unfortunately women have to be wary of every man they meet, because even the seemingly nice ones can be the worst kind of men.

It also displayed toxic femininity pretty well too. They would talk about how such good friends they were but as soon as shit got real they were quick to air each others secrets out. I see that a lot with women, they’ll say how good of friends they are but actually hate each other and this movie gave that fakeness consequences which was cool. Literally every death could’ve been avoided if they talked and listened to each other like real friends definitely would. Also the main reason they were wary of Greg was because they thought he was a military vet but he was a veterinarian. I don’t think the message there was “women have to fear men” it was more “these people are so self absorbed that they didn’t care to ask their friend anything about her boyfriend”.

I interpreted it as if you're a phone-obsessed person (basically every character in the movie), suddenly losing reception can cause you to feel separated and alone and maybe even unable to process basic information that you've been relying on your phone/the internet as a crutch to understand. Losing service in the hurricane served as kind of a trigger too of them all realizing that they were now truly alone to deal with any problems themselves (which leads to almost all of the chaos and violence). So when suddenly their phone reception comes back it not only marks the end of this horrifying saga as the outside world is now accessible again, it also represents that they suddenly have a full vision on what actually happened that night. Just like the phone that suddenly bursts with messages all at once, they too have "downloaded" all the information and avoidable circumstances of everyone's deaths in their heads. The cruel irony being that maybe if they had service the whole time this could've been avoided and also her deadpan read of "I have reception" plays into the fact that usually that line is said in a joyful/victorious tone as a return to normalcy but she delivers it in a kind of defeated/sarcastic way since obviously the damage is done and they can't just "return to normal".

This movie had no problem calling out like 50% of its audience at least, plus that ending completely rips the rug out from under you, it was almost guaranteed to be too ambitious for its target demographic. I think that the people who would enjoy this movie the most are the exact opposite of the people who enjoy slasher movies and that's probably it's biggest issue. nobody’s talking about how much this film is about classism too…

@@mydogeatspuke the reason why jordan shot jessie?
@mydogeatspuke2 жыл бұрын
@@marblesun9669 seriously? You think she shot her because she called her upper middle class? That the whole situation and outcome was genuinely about class? Lmao kids are so stupid. Wow.

I love how all of the characters can be right about each other and yet (almost) no one is likeable in the least 😅
@superjackster0165 Жыл бұрын
Bee was actually pretty likeable. She was the only character that seemed like a genuinely good person. All the other characters were awful human beings

I disagree with this intro saying the trailer looked bad. The trailer looked good which is why it drew interest.

Yup I agree Rachel Sennott is the best in the movie, actually because she portraits the hysterical genz girl the best!

It’s crazy how I know all of these people in the movie they literally act like my old friends

this was really the butter fly effect of a misunderstanding. but i liked it anyway, amandla was nice to watch especially in a gothic look with the vivienne westwood ring

I predicted that the first "murder" was going to be what it was but I still really liked this movie and like how it subverts without being a like a hacky Shyamalan flick

Just watched this movie for the first time a couple nights ago and I just realized that everyone that dies in this movie is underwater in the pool when they’re first introduced to the audience. The only people that make it out are the ones looking down on the others underwater. I know I’m probably late to this realization but I just wanted to point out that was a nice piece of foreshadowing.

Shout out to the only KZbinr here who got it 😂. Had such a good time with the movie last night

I predicted the trust very early in the runtime, but it didn't hurt the movie for me. It doesn't rely on that surprise or mystery to be enjoyable, it's really just about seeing the insane shit these people do and say and saying 'yeah they're just like me fr'

Really enjoyed this movie. I too had really low expectations. When seeing the visuals I had a flashback to spring breakers. I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the movie and can't wait to watch it again after seeing the ending

Hi, Karsten. I never miss your videos and your opinions on film are very interesting and thought out. Recently, I watched all of the Wes Anderson films inspired by your videos. I’d really like rankings of the Coen brothers, Edgar Wright, Steven Spielberg, Ridley scott and James Cameron.

This was a fun movie! I will say however that there were certain parts that dragged and I thought the movie wasn’t, idk, dense enough. Not enough scares, not enough funny lines, whatever. By the time it narrows to the last 2 girls, I was like okay I get it, wrap it up please.

It's also kinda funny the fact that anytime a character says something like "this is just like the bodies bodies game", another one discards it completelly as bullshit, as we as an audience know that's how horror movies work
