Please see my reply to this post. You need to forget a lot of what you learned in this video because it's wrong. The use of BODMAS and the Order of Operations rule is incorrectly taught in this video. There are many incorrect teachings in this video. I have provided a very thorough correction to it and am currently part way through creating an extensive explanation of everything there is to know about the main arithmetic operations and the Order of Operations. Here is my comment: ___________ Please don't teach incorrect mathematics and incorrect terminology!!! There are many things wrong with this video. ________ Firstly, you incorrectly tell people that BODMAS is a rule. That's wrong. BODMAS IS NOT A RULE!!!!! You need to accurately tell people what exactly BODMAS is. BODMAS along with other commonly taught acronyms including BOMDAS, BEDMAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS, GEMDAS, GEMS, DMAS and MDAS are all nothing more than stupid made up misleading acronyms that LAZY TEACHERS teach their students to help them rote learn the actual rule which is the Order of Operations rule. Teachers and students need to forget stupid and misleading acronyms and learn the actual mathematical rule instead. You need to be teaching the mathematical logic and reasoning behind the actual Order of Operations rule. BODMAS IS NOT A RULE _________ What the letter O in BODMAS stands for is commonly incorrectly taught. The letter O stands for ORDERS. It does NOT stand for of or off or open or out or over or operation or other or anything else. The O stands for ORDERS. Orders are another name for exponents, powers, indexes and indicies. Order means to the order of.... The O step is not limited to orders though. What the step really is, is operations of an unary nature. Unary operations include exponents as well as their inverse operations of roots/radicals and logarithms. Other unary operations include the unary plus and unary minus, factorials, absolute values, percentages, and unary functions including the trig functions of sin, cos and tan. An operation is unary if it only acts on ONE OPERAND. Most operations are binary because most operators act on two operands. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are all binary operations because they act on two operands. Addition: 4 + 2 Operands: 4 and 2 Subtraction: 4 - 2 Operands: 4 and 2 Multiplication: 4 x 2 Operands: 4 and 2 Division: 4 ÷ 2 Operands: 4 and 2 Exponentiation: 4² Operand: 4 Root: √4 Operand: 4 Logarithm: log4 Operand: 4 Factorial: 4! Operand: 4 Negation: -4 Operand: 4 Percentage: 4% Operand: 4 Absolute Value: |4| Operand: 4 Function: sin45 Operand: 45 Function: tan30 Operand: 30 There is NO such operation in mathematics as OF. _____________ You use incorrect terminology when it comes to brackets. And it is INCORRECT to say that there are 3 types of symbols used in grouping. There are more than 3 types of grouping symbols. TERMINOLOGY CORRECTION The correct notation for "brackets" is: [ ] They are brackets. ( ) are technically termed parentheses. Parentheses are the main set of symbols used to show grouping in mathematics. [ ] are technically termed brackets. They are the second type of grouping symbols that are expected to be used in an expression after parentheses. { } are technically termed braces, or curly braces. These come third when used to show grouping after parentheses and brackets. So usage is like so with the innermost having the highest priority, moving outwards to the brackets and finally to the braces. { [ ( ) ] } BUT there are other types of symbols that are used to show grouping in math. < > are also a type of grouping symbol. They are termed angle brackets. | | the absolute value modulus sign is also a type of grouping symbol. ______ the horizontal line or vinculum is also treated as a grouping symbol when it extends HORIZONTALLY between operations in a numerator and/or denominator. The horizontal vinculum that forms the extension above operations in radical sign is also used to show that those operations are to be treated as a group. More importantly you don't explain the use of brackets correctly or thoroughly enough. And you really should be using the term grouping symbols to refer to the first step in the Order of Operations rule. Because operations that are GROUPED together and placed inside one of the sets of symbols that are used to show grouping are what the first priority is being given to. Also you need to emphasise that the contents found inside of a set of grouping symbols only have priority if and when they contain a group. A group of operations. If a set of parentheses is used in an expression and it does not hold an operation to calculate then it is NOT treated as a grouping symbol and it does not have priority. (4) is just a single number. The parentheses used to hold the 4 do not have any priority associated with them. They are strictly notational and if preceded or followed by another term then they denote the operation of multiplication implicitly. But that multiplication operation has no priority. It is just normal multiplication. So only what is contained INSIDE of grouping symbols are any kind of part of it and they only have priority when they contain an operation. IF IT'S NOT INSIDE IT DON'T PRIORITISE IT. _______ You very INCORRECTLY tell students that division is calculated before multiplication. This is SO WRONG. YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE MAIN ARITHMETIC OPERATIONS!!!!!! * Multiplication and division are the inverse operations of each other. Multiplication undoes division and division undoes multiplication. They are opposite or reverse in nature. The idea of multiplication does not exist without the idea of division. They are inextricably linked. If you can multiply something then it logically follows that you must also be able to divide it back up. 5×4 = 20 20÷4 = 5 5×4 = 20 20÷4 = 5 5×4 = 20 5×4 = 20 multiplying it 20÷4 = 5 undoing it by diving it back up Or you can start with the a number and divide it first and then multiply to get the number back. 20÷4 = 5 5×4 = 20 20÷4 = 5 5×4 = 20 20÷4 = 5 dividing it up 5×4 = 20 undoing it by multiplying to get it back * The LAW OF INVERSES can also be applied. Division is really just a form of multiplication and so it can easily be written as nmultiplication of the reciprocal or inverse operation as per the Law of Inverses. A division operation can be rewritten as multiplication by changing the division sign to a multiplication sign and flipping the numerator with the denominator in the dividend of the operation. The divisor remains unchanged. Algebraically: a ÷ b ≡ a × ¹/b Numerically: 4 ÷ 2 ≡ 4 × ½ We can verify this by performing both calculations to check whether or not they produce the same result. 4 ÷ 2 = 2 ✔︎✔︎ 4 × ½ = 2 ✔︎✔︎ So what does all of this mean?? It means that multiplication and division are equal in priority and precedence. Multiplication and division are calculated together in the same step, whichever comes first, one after the other, across the page from left to right. Division does NOT have priority over multiplication and division is NOT calculated before multiplication as a rule. It depends on the expression you are calculating and which of the two operations come first in it. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION are also inverse operations of each other. Addition undoes subtraction and subtraction undoes addition. Subtraction can be rewritten as addition of the reciprocal or negative addition. 4 - 2 can be rewritten as addition of the negative. 4 + -2 And 4 + -2 = 4 - 2 Because a positive and a negative result in a negative. This means that addition and subtraction are also equal in priority and precedence and as such they are calculated together in the same step, whichever comes first, one after the other, across the page from left to right. _________ And so writing BODMAS vertically is misleading. B O D M A S Writing it like that makes it look like there must be 6 corresponding steps in the Order of Operations. This is WRONG. Also writing it vertically like that with the D for division above the M for multiplication is badly misleading. As is writing it with the A for addition above the S for subtraction. If you insist on using BODMAS you MUST show it like this: B O DM AS B O DM AS _______ PLEASE CORRECT YOUR VIDEO AND STOP TEACHING INCORRECT MATH.
