Was trying to figure out what is so comforting about Steve’s videos. I think it’s that no matter the inclement conditions (be they weather or people), he is always calm as he goes through the familiar pattern of setup, step 2, meal, and bedtime (with some variation). He brings order where there is chaos, and inspires a sense of ease in his viewers, assuming I’m not the only one. The Mr Rogers of camping

I think what is comforting is that he is just an average joe like any of us and we can relate good with him in a sense that the average camper is not an expert. This episode remind me of when me and my brother went camping to the lake when we were teenagers, it was a perfect 70 Degree evening when we set up the tent .The weather drop 40 degrees there was front all inside the tent. Your story you told about getting scared reminded me of mine. I went camping in a park with some friends on Halloween night of this year. We were about a 3 mile hike from the parking lot to the site. We had been there most of the day but around 1030pm my friend needed to go back to the car to get something he had forgotten so I went with him. As of 1030 we were the only cars in the parking lot. This was also the only parking lot that had access to the trails as the park is on a peninsula created by a river much to deep to just cross. It had been raining a lot the days prior and the trail was flooded in some sections and was nothing but mud which made it hard to traverse. We get back and all is well. We are having our step 2's as we watch the fire burn and before you know it it is time to turn in. I wake up the next morning and get up to see one of my friends by the fire. I go over and I am talking with him and he asks if I heard the voices and foot steps around the tents last night at approximately 230am. I'm alarmed but I assure him someone probably just got up to pee. He wasn't so sure and said he heard someone say "Oh so this is where they're at" A half an hour passes and my friend in the third tent awakes and comes and asks us if we heard the voices. Now I'm shitting myself. We go around and ask the group if anyone got up last night but everyone reported staying in their tent throughout the entire night. Nothing was amiss from our site and it's hard to determine if the foot prints around the tents were from us setting them up or someone snooping around in the dark. Eventually we pack up and all head our separate ways but I can't shake the thought of someone creeping around our camp while we were all sleeping. I ended up calling the park ranger's dispatch station to ask if there was any chance a ranger was out patrolling and checking in on us to make sure we were safe or were permitted to be at that camp site. The dispatcher informed me that the rangers stop patrolling at around 10pm and the last time a ranger was reported to be at that park was 945pm. I told her what had happened and her tone quickly changed and she took my information because she wanted me to file a report with a ranger. A few minutes go by and I received a call from a park ranger. I give him all my info and tell him the story. He told me that we were the only ones who were registered to be camping there that night but he did not want me to worry. I get the impression that this isn't the first time they've received a report similar to mine at this park. In the end nothing bad ever came of this but still I can't help but feel like we were being stalked that night.

You can learn a lot about stealth camping by what fails. I have an example. A young homeless couple had a camp in the power company wooded right of way in my subdivision. It was close the the community center so they had access to fresh water from the outside hose spigots. In addition there was a laundry room open 24/7 so the could, and did, wash clothes. But one day the police were called and rousted them out. So what went wrong? Before what they did to bring attention the failure at their camp site. They had a yellow tent in the woods in a large clear space under the tree cover. The mistake here was they positioned the tent near the edge where it could be seen by anyone walking in the right of way. The police were called because they got over confidant and brazen in their activities. The community building had security cameras and at night they were hopping the fence to swim in the pool. That alerted management that someone that did not look like they were part of a 55+ community were on the grounds. The final act was they were not content to carry water back to their camp area to wash themselves. So they found a weak point in the lock for the outside entrance to the ladies room. A resident lady walking by tried to use the toilet and found the naked man washing himself in a sink. She ran off and called management. I was walking by and saw a young man on a bicycle peddling like demons were after him ride off to the right of way. Well the community manager and two employees showed up. We found some wet clothes in the laundry room. Walking the right of way with a flashlight saw he had parked his bike at the edge of the woods making the tent really stand out. It was an ideal camp spot and they could have stayed there for many months. The lesson is do not make your presence apparent, leave no trace and do not get over confident.

Ok so I've found that you can stealth just about anywhere with a body bag. First sprinkle some used brass around, mark each casing with a plastic cone with a numbers on it, string up a "CRIME SCENE" tape around you before climbing into the bag. This works just about anywhere. The biggest problem is with the gawkers who take selfies with you in the background. The second biggest problem is when the "Morgue" truck shows up. Happy Halloween.

Morgues are actually quite safe for living people, its very very very easy to differentiate a living body from one that has been dead for several hours, the likelihood that you get treated as though you were dead by a mortician is basically none. It does happen occasionally that living people end up in the morgue, the only real danger of this is that those people usually needed medical attention and didn't receive it promptly, sitting around in the morgue. The body bag itself could kill you, but I think those are less common than tv shows make them seem, at least theyre uncommon enough for a few real stories of people waking up in morgues to exist

Spooky story. Reminds me of my own experience when my brother and I, after landing in Australia back in 97 bought a kombi van with the intention of exploring the outback. On our first night in the bush we pulled off road and got ready to sleep when after about half an hour or so we heard someone banging loudly on the side of the van. Needless to say we were bolt upright in our sleeping bags. We sat there for a few minutes in silent fear when came 3 more loud bangs on the side of the van. I felt the blood drain from my face. We had these curtains on the windows so we couldn’t see anything outside and there was no way on earth I was going to snap back the curtains only to be greeted with an aboriginal tribal face starring back at me. My brother cowering under his sleeping bag suggested I climb into the driving seat and get the hell out of there. He promised that he’d be right behind me. I climbed into the driving seat and started the van not daring to look left or right for fear of seeing something that might haunt me forever, but looking in the rear view mirror I noticed my brother still cowering in his bag. I put my foot down and kicking up dust rejoined the highway. We drove all night along the remote Northern Territory highway until morning. The following night we found a suitable spot to camp, a very remote site were we would be safe. Just as we were getting to sleep, someone started banging on the side of the van again! We came to the conclusion that it must have been the fuel tank or panelling contracting from the heat of the day. It happened every night for 3 months and after the first few nights we just slept through it, reminiscent of that scene in the film castaway. I would think that your large camp fire would have heated the panelling on your RV with the resulting bang due to cooling. Hope I haven’t spoilt your story. 🙂

A large fire close enough to an RV made of a metal could heat a section of secured metal enough to expand or flex and create the sound you heard in the middle of the night. The fact it was a single noise and not a 'knock' so to speak, lays credibility to it i think. Occam's Razor

Next time you want to camp in a situation like that is to carry a set of pruning shears (the type that will fit in one hand). It will help to trim off some of the little dead twigs from the evergreen branches. Then if you are careful you could use it to start a small fire.

Spooky sasquatch stories from Steve-in-a-sack for stiffs? That's the content I love! Also, soon as I saw that body bag roll out, I was like, man, he's gonna be cold and wet tonight.

Curious if the noises he heard weren’t the sides of his camper flexing due to the heat of the massive fire he had going?
@chuckn4851
@chuckn4851 2 жыл бұрын
@@2010SLP Considered that myself, cause something like that happened to me and a friend once. But it was more of a creaking/groaning sound, not like what Steve described at all, which were huge smacking/hitting sounds and someone walking and leaving step impressions in the snow. Plus, gotta figure that like us Steve didn't make the huge fire *that* close to his RV. So I'm leaning towards it being something lol

As soon as I saw him trying to cook stew meat at a high heat boil I got a feeling his meal was going to be like eating plastic and he wouldn't last the night. Lol and the body bag is like trying to sleep in a huge trash bag.

This is a great stealth. It combines two of my old time Camping with Steve favorites: camping in the median of the highway and camping behind the road sign, but is even better. I love the cheesy references to Halloween, too. You were able to top a great stealth from last week with one even better. Great stuff.

If Steve ever decides to make a trek to the more eastern part of Canada, I've got the perfect freeway median for him - right in the middle of Canada's busiest highway (401) - there's a nice treed area right at km 666 (hmmm... perfect for another Halloween video in a future year!). These are some of my favourite Camping w/ Steve vids! (I think the culvert under the highway was my all-time fav)

If you cook the beef in with the food and don't brown it, the meat is more tender. Plus saves you a step and saves the need for more pots. :) I make similar with my family, and sometimes the beef is to tough. Boiling it with them instead of browning it helps a LOT. We just toss in a tablespoon of beef base.

Nah, some people allow their sensitivity to overcome them and act on pure emotion. If there’s an aspect of something thats gonna bother someone, like a body bag, you put it in the title, they didn’t have to watch it. If it truly bothered them, just like any mature adult, they would have simply moved on. Awesome video steve, no where near over doing it in my honest opinion, quite creative. Creativity scares people, remember that
