Body mounted means that when propelling around a curve the forces are angled at a tangent away from the curve and thus more likely to lead to derailments. Bogie mounted keeps the forces more aligned with the direction of travel and thus reduces the likelihood of derailments. If you have terminus or do a fair bit of shunting of bogie vehicles then propelling over points or around curves is a frequent occurrence.

Many thanks Nigel for sharing this video. I will be looking at replacing the couplings on my Heljan CarggoWagon's and have had a couple of issues with my Mk1 Bachmann coach stock even when fitting Hunt couplings, regards Barry..

Great video Nigel. I fitted quite a few bachmann mk1s with bogie mounted couplings when they first came out 20 odd years ago. My current layout has easier curves but a few gradient changes which initially caused derailment. Nowadays I leave the couplings as the were but slacken the centre casting screw to give the bogie more vertical movement and they very rarely derail. Cheers Russ

Loosening off the bogie screw does help a lot especially with the Commonwealth bogies! 👍

I've done the same to my Heljan vans, but I need to replace the wheels on mine, as they're the brass ones which get filthy very quickly.

Sorry to see you have suffered the problems seen in this video. Have you tried the NEM Kadee couplers available? Because when fitted correctly. The coupler heads allow lateral and vertical movement of your rollingstock and dont bind like tension locks do, restricting the movemnt of coaches and wagons leading to the derailments you encountered. All the buffing and tensing forces in your trains are transmitted through the Kadees thence through the body mounted ( on my stock) pockets. I havenot suffered the problems you have highlighted in your video. If you want any screw on the bogie couplers I have a load of them you can have.

I plan on investing in a 3D printer sometime in the remainder of this year; many of the hobbies I engage in require things that don’t exist on the market, or aren’t readily available. Besides that I’ve a lot of ideas for things that I can’t put out so easily without a printer. Coupling mechanisms and the like are certainly on the list of things I’d like to try putting together, being that most of my models these days are old Lima and Hornby’s pulled kicking and screaming into the 21st century, or kitbuilt. I know a friend of mine would like to see a NEM attachment for the later Lima coupling (seen on classes 60, 67, and 92, etc).

This is an issue I face having a H0 layout with R1 curves (which are sharper than 00 R1 curves). My British models derail every-time do to the coupling mechanism, could try these parts in the video to fix it.

Totally agree with having coupling on the bogies not the body.

Great video there, thankyou for that. Some really good information. I have a question though. Do you (or anyone) know what the NEM pockets stand for or is it just they are called. Cheers from John in Australia
@RobA500 Жыл бұрын
NEM stands for Normen Europäischer Modellbahnen which is German and translates to European standards for Model Railroads.

NEM pockets were devised to allow interchangerbility of various coupler heads ie Marklin, Roco et al. The best coupler head for british outline with NEM pockets is the Kadee one. There are four different lengths of tail that clips into the NEM pocket. I have been using these for years and not had any of the problems that Nigel has. Perhaps modellers should trial different systems before condemning any out of hand. One thing that might help is to understand how buffing and tensing forces work and interact in prototype trains in the real world.
