Nose nostalgia is a real thing! There’s been hundreds of studies on it, think about it. When you smell something that you haven’t smelled in years, but the second you smell it you’re instantly “brought back” to when you smelled it for the first time. It’s fascinating

OK, so, about the horse testosterone in AXE: i'm like 68% sure i know exactly what mark was thinking of. Back in like, 2010, when Monster Energy drink was at its peak, hysterical white "Satanic Panic" type moms misread the ingredients label and sincerely believed that *"taurine"* was *literal bull urine.* Hence, i heard from more than one friend's mom, "Don't drink that!!!! it's got BULL PEE in it!!!" Tangentially related to Mark's rant enough that I think he might have heard it and got the wires crossed. (Yes, I am being serious. Fun fact with the smells being objective/subjective: some smells are instinctually bad smelling to most people, ig a decaying body, feces etc. That's probably from those with a mutation thinking those smells are bad were more likely to survive, probably from not living near corpses or feces that were hives for disease. Some other smells can be subjective like an individuals smell which some can be attracted to or pushed away.

I've been told that the more genetically alike you are with someone the more their body odor will stink. Its supposed to encourage reproducing with someone with very different genetics in order to create a more genetically diverse offspring. For example the body odor of family members, especially full blooded siblings will probably be the strongest and most bad smelling. I was told this after questioning why my pregnant sister who decided to stop wearing deodorant in the summer smelled so awful to me.

Lixian's art style is so adorable xD And this Podcast is the best thing ever :D On that case of bad smells being integrated by our societal upbringing... I think there is something to it. Many people from the city love the smell of car fumes and are not appalled by it. Meanwhile, I cannot stand it at all. I grew up in small villages, outside the outskirts of bigger metropolitans. While they like car fumes and I do not, I like the smell of fertilized fields and barns, which they say smells worse than their sewer grates. I think there is something to it, whether you consider a smell bad or not.

The thing that makes the "upside down googles" work is because the human eye works like a camera lens.(I was taught this in photography class!) So this means that every image we see is projected to the retina upside down, but our brain flips it for us to see it non-upside down. It's the same if you make a camera out of a shoebox and put a square of film in the back, which we did in that class. After I developed the film I saw that the image had been upside down in the box. So thanks to actually putting the theory into action it helped me to remember. Real cool! I loved that teacher.

32:40, it's more scent--memory related. It causes nostalgia due to the various memories or people in your life that certain scents are connected to. Your brain can compartmentalize these things so when you smell specific scents, they can automatically draw your thoughts back to a specific person or event or location in your life, even if you haven't thought about that specific thing in *YEARS.* It's the strangest thing, but it's so damn fascinating. ^__^

To touch on Bob’s point from the Zoidburg thing, my husband works a lot and (unfortunately) doesn’t get a chance to shower every single day. There have been times where he hasn’t showered for like 3 days… he NEVER smells bad to me. If his breath stinks it does bother me, but I never get a sense of body odor, I only smell HIM, his particular smell. And his smell is genuinely calming for me. On the other hand, if I can smell myself at ALL, I feel repulsed and I need to shower immediately. I myself am a self-hating kind of person and have come to grips with how much I dislike myself, so no worries there because I am fine, but I love my husband more than anything, so I do think Bob is onto something in that smells from someone you love will at the very least not bother you as much upon pure reaction.

About the eyesight and the guy who had it flipped while wearing the goggles: I learned at school(I think) that our eyes actually receive all the information upside down but had been trained to relay that information to our brain as right side up. 32:00 about Bob's questions relating to smells, we do have pheromones and we do know what smells good or bad (such as scenting disease or mating potential). People with "bad" B.O. have immune systems closer to our own, while people whose B.O. has no smell/smells good have a very different immune system and would be great to mate with in order to produce genetically healthier children (in terms of immune system). Basically people who are stinky to you have similar immune systems to you. It's not a "social construct", as smell is one of the most powerful senses.

you actually technically get more and more acquired to a smell the more you are subjected to it. It's the same reason why our houses smell normal to us but different to guest that comes into it. But once your exposure is removed or decreased you tend to go back to a regular state. Our smell is based on proteins that, special receptors in our nose & tongue; fit into like key slots of different smelling compounds. I'm not a professional but I have read that these receptors can change over time just like our taste buds(which a lot of our smell is based upon) so it is totally possible to love the smell of a normally smelly thing, or just not know its there.

32:20 Traditionally "bad" smells don't bother me hardly at all, and I think that might be because they remind me of my childhood growing up in the woods with a bunch of dogs. I used to live about 10 miles from the nearest town in a place you probably couldn't find on a map, so those dogs were essentially my only friends, and we did everything together. And after a day of rolling around with them in the dirt, we smelled just about the same (terrible), so the smell never much bothered me. It's been years since I moved away, and I generally maintain a much higher degree of physical hygiene, but I still don't find "bad" smells all that terrible. Maybe it's just because I got used to them, but I personally think that it's because, at least to some degree, I subconsciously attribute bad smells to all the fun times I had with my dogs, and that affects my conscious evaluation of smells.

Man, people talking about smells bringing memories back is wild. I can't smell, or at least, not a lot. I've help dog poop to my nose and took a whiff just to prove a point that i literally can't smell it while my dad couldn't even approach it from across the room. Now, I think i can "kinda" smell but only specific things. usually its entering a Dunkin Donuts where there's this smell that just makes me feel good. I think I can also smell pasta cooking, but since I can't really smell I really feel like I'm just hallucinating whatever I think smell is. Oh, also maybe "wine body odor" idk how to describe it but sometimes that's just what my dad smells like (this is a recent one). Those are the only three things i can say i "smell", nothing else. People often ask if i can taste things and I can, or, at least i think i can. Thats the annoying thing, to my perception everything's normal, i don't know if what I'm tasting is as flavorful as someone else's. At least with smell I'm confident i can't smell like 99% of things. Maybe it's something that can be trained, idk

A few comments I've got, so apologies for the long text: 1. I remember at my one job, there was this customer I served that had such bad B.O that whoever was standing in line behind or in front of her were spreading outward to try to avoid her. And when she approached me, I felt dizzy and nauseated. It was probably the worst smell in my life. You can tell she hasn't showered for awhile 'cause her hair was really greasy, and she was purchasing hygiene products with her groceries. 2. About people smelling nice, when I used to go out with my ex, he would comment about how nice I smelled. I've always been curious of what I smell like, even if there was a perfume made out of my B.O. What's pretty interesting is that there are all of these perfumes made from celebrity B.O that's being made. Of course, they would mix in some other scents like flowers and spices that represents them personality-wise. They even make perfumes based on fictional characters. 3. About the different smells people like and don't like, I can't stand the smell of vinegar but there are some people out there that love the smell of it 'cause it reminds them of french fries. 4. About the fart thing, I read somewhere that smelling your own farts is supposed to be healthy for you. I can't remember the reason why, though. I think it had something to do with the methane.

Actually we have a LOT more than five senses. One example is our sense of time. If you are sitting down and look at the time on your phone you usually have at least some idea of what the time will be.

The perfect “one-liner” for a clown assassin, isn’t him saying anything at all. It’s just the clown honking his nose before the kill. So imagine…. if you will: Honk-honk *snap*

if we gonna talk about stank here's a short story so I was going on vacation to Florida, and we stopped off at this motel for the night. I was thirsty and we didn't have anything, so a drank the sink water. worse decision I ever made, I smelt like farts and it was foggy and (as I type this out im becoming sick) the next day I woke up throwing up, apparently the water had became tainted and it was just disgusting

Oh god! 🤮🤮 The filtered water at my hospital smells weird to me, like vaguely fishy. I’m not the only one who thinks so, the filter gets changed regularly but the smell never changes. I drink from the tap instead because I can’t. 🫢

Watching this while I can't smell, due to allergies. Just a reminder that you can't taste if you can't smell. I had pizza last night and I am extremely sad, because I couldn't taste any if it. 😭

@zafireshadows90602 жыл бұрын
@@oldveryveryoldmanfromthe1900s No, I don't. This happens every year. My allergies kick in, then I can't smell or taste for a month. It's happened every Spring for the past 6 or so years.

It’s a bad idea to listen to these late at night while I’m drawing and everyone else is asleep, I’m only on the second ep and it made me laugh so hard except I had to hold it in so I didn’t wake anyone up-

Fun Fact: You can actually hear and feel every single thing that happens within your body (ie. heartbeat, digestion, etc) but your brain automatically tunes those sensations out. I don’t know why, probably because if humans were constantly aware of the inner workings of their own bodies, they’d go insane.
