It's not surprising the age thing isn't known because some people confuse Kazuma's actual age with his Web novel counter part. The Konosuba Web Novel and Light Novel had different ages for each character. The anime is based on the Light novel. The web novel was more of a prototype and was less of a comedy. The confusion of character age comes from people not actually reading the Light novel where they pretty much just say the characters ages with the exception of Aqua. Just know there is only like a 2 age gap between the two characters. Also we can agree on Clair being fucked up

yeah, if i remember right everyone in the web novel was older with kazuma being about as old as darkness rather than notably younger and it was aged down to appeal more to younger audiences and because megumin was aged down to match her new personality and speaking style and so kazuma had to also be aged down to avoid making it really weird.

the body swap voice thing i love and shows how distinctive the characters are where just the mannerisms and tone of voice are distinctive enough that you can tell who it is even if its a different voice actor doing it.

There's four approaches: Change the voices directly (worst option), keep the voices the exact same (second-worst option), have the voice actors swap but try to impersonate the base body character (2nd best option), or have the voice actors NOT swap but try to impersonate the inhabiting soul character (best option). The visuals help a great deal for Konosuba, the characters are very expressive.

Megumin was never 12 in the main story, I think she was 12 in the spinoff that shows her growing up, if I recall she was 14 at the start of the light novel and I am pretty sure she was 15 at the end of the novel which is definitely on the sus side but for the record 15 is old enough to get married in their world, not defending this or saying it should be that way in the real world in any way, just explaining why kazuma doesn't get much shit over it, I think kazuma is 16 at the start of the light novel and 17 at the end of it for the record. He did died to the kobolds like in this episode but the joke in the LNs is that Kazuma dies in the sidequests like killing Snow Dprites but the Winter Shogun shows up, the Runner Lizards or here with the mob enemies. But in the LNs Kazuma never dies against the Demon King's generals like Silvia or Hans

There are a lot of comments on this, "age thing" but I feel like they all leave things out or explain things poorly, so I'll give my go from a couple minutes of searching. There is some confusion due to ages not being clear, different ages in different series', as well as the web novel having different ages. Megumin is 12 in her prequel series, which is likely where the idea of that age comes from, in the show, she is 14, but will get older as the show goes on. Kazuma is 16, in the original web novel all the characters were aged up about 4 years, so that's where the older age estimate comes from (makes the drinking a little strange, I guess 15-16 is the legal drinking age in this world??) light novel (not web novel) and show had the characters aged down. I agree it is still a little weird though, especially when they frequently make a point of her being younger. But also agree it's probably best not to think about it.

That was the loudest silence I ever did hear. I always respect when a show decides to have a body swap keep the body's voice. It's how it should work and hearing a mannerism change can be pleasantly bizarre. And yes, Kazuma managed to swap just in time to eat the hit Iris would have taken. Big Sis Megumin being a splendid bad influence. I'm not surprised Megumin's age is so contentious. Ages in general for Konosuba can vary depending on whether you're reading the light novel, web novel, manga, or watching the anime. And the passage of time as the story progresses is kind of blurry. Not to mention the manga and anime are happy to use different aged designs for different characters for some reason. I think it was Yunyun who didn't start out as crazy busty, but they kept her later design while still de-aging her? She and Megumin are the same age, for whatever that's worth. Anything to do with Iris is definitely weird though.

Yunyun was in the same year of schooling as Megumin. I don't think someone as low-charisma as Yunyun would have been able to skip grades, and I don't think someone as overachieving as Megumin would have been held back them. They might be just under a year apart, and so one "year" off in ages-in-years, but their actual age difference is likely in months, not years. Yunyun was probably 13 in the Explosion side-story, which took place just before Megumin got to Axel and met up with Kazuma, who then spent two winters with him (first get the mansion/winter shogun winter, then invented-the-kotatsu-after-the-court-trial winter). Putting her at 15 as well.
