Hey Ian, Is their anyway that you can create a video explaining how to learn tricks on the opposite side ? By this I mean that Im used to surf to my left side and most tricks like backflip and ARS are easier to practice on that side. But for some reason to my right side Im able to do tricks I cant regularly do to the left. Like the invert or forward spin. But yeah mate a vid of this would help a lot. 🏄🏾‍♂️🍺

Whats a good, helpful way to practice these techniques, when i try to bottom turn, I either don't get enough speed to get out of the barrel, or I just get completely pitted. Also I sometimes feel that when I try to take off a really steep and heavy barrel, I end up completely getting launched off the lip of the wave if that kind of makes sense. If you could give me some advice on these I would really appreciate it, thanks. I'm only starting to ride some of my local reef breaks after building some confidence haha.
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 3 жыл бұрын
You need to paddle a lot harder into waves. Seems the lack of speed is because you can’t get enough speed at the start of the wave. By paddling harder into waves you will have the extra speed you need. 🤙🏼

Thanks for the great insights and breakdown. Appreciate how you include good examples with the verbal cures. One big question I have is about when to transition my hips forward from the kicking position (catching the wave) to projecting forward to gain more speed for a powerful bottom turn. Do you move forward as you begin the drop, during the drop down the face or as you start the turn? I'd love to see a video on this when you get the chance.

G'day Iain, can you please do a video explaining the short, sharp near-vertical redirection turns pros manage to do but most of us average riders cannot fathom? eg. say at 4:43, if the section starts to shut down faster than anticipated, pros seem to be able to reset in a split second to instead aim for the lip above them rather than the ramp they were aiming at further down the line. I've talked with other riders with 30+ years experience who also have this issue, possibly because we grew up in an age of studying print mags and have always drawn out bottom turns. I believe I've noticed a quick flattening of the board and then an inward change of focus before resetting the rail? Almost a little like setting up for a forward spin then re-engaging with the board now pointing up/into the wave face rather than down the line? In these situations I'd just get stuck trying to turn even harder, which just bogs and doesn't redirect "vertically", I think perhaps it needs a complete mental change to the way us older folk turn, a flatten-then-redirect rather than a "turn harder"?
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 2 жыл бұрын
There definitely is a movement that we are doing to redirect. Of course the flatter the board the more speed so when pulling up on the rail like that it does effect speed. I’ll have to look into this a bit more because I don’t have an answer for you right now. 🤣👌🏼

Hi Iain and greetings from France, I have been practising some 2-3 Meter barrels in Hossegor South France recently. Had some Problems therefore I have some questions: 1. What do you recommrnd would be the perfect timing to paddle for a big barrel wave. Should it have the form as a more decent "Mountain" or almost a more steep wall? When i Start paddling the steep wall it seems almost to late as it picks me up und pulls me up to the top of the wave to Slam me down steep with the lip. Maybe you can explain some points about the perfect timing to paddle on a wave. I prefere paddling a wave as soon as possible because those steep walls rising make me feel that it's going to end up Bad for me, especially the big waves. Smaller waves are no Problem for me. 2. When you Start paddling for a wave, Do you only use youre feet? As I Was into Surfing, I like using my Arms to paddle for the wave, also I have the impression that I am faster with feet and Arms together. But the Problem it brings with it is, that when the wave gets me startet I have to reposition my Arms correctly on the Board as you once explainend (left turn=left arm 90degree Holding the left upper nose part etc.....) When I watch your takeoffs you only seem to use your feet to catch the wave and have already positioned your Arms correctly...... The earlyer I want to catch a wave the more speed I need, therefore I also need my Arms to support my feet. Maybe I am too early with my takeoffs or my leg Power is too weak. 2. How do you get out a barrel when it's a closeout wave aspecially often at shorebreaks without injuring yourself? I can not get out those barrels without getting smashed because neither there is a escape possibility on the left nor on the right side........ So it means to me getting in the barrel and then shortly after beeing in the pipe getting slamed. 3. I am often afraid to get the top of a massive barrel on my back when I get pushed out of it. What can I do to avoid this? Especially at closeout with no escape option. (technique for beginner) 4. What about typical unjuries in bodyboarding? What is there to Look after or watch out? especially back and neck? Best regards from France
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the message and all the questions. 1. When paddling for waves you need to make the decision early. Learning how to take off on steeper waves is also key. But my suggestion is always to paddle earlier in order to get on the wave and start moving down the wave. 2. The key with paddling is to use your legs and maybe one arm. The other will be on the nose of the board pushing down to get the board as flat as possible. This will also allow you to have the position ready when you have caught the wave. The technique will help you be able to position better and allow for easier and quicker start to your ride…
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 2 жыл бұрын
3. I have made a video about falling in the barrel that may help you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZaWiIR-ntWaeMk 4. Try not to go straight when the wave is closing out and you won’t worry about the wave landing on your back. If you have the speed you can do it but if not, focus on riding into the close out and not straight! 5. I wouldn’t worry too much about the back. Neck for sure as well as shoulders. When doing moves try to keep your elbows tucked into the side of your body which will help prevent injury. And always do a short warm up before you go surf. Enjoy the ocean and keep bodyboarding 🤙🏼
