Litany: The litany is a form of communal prayer, in which a prayer leader presented becomes. Probably one of my favorite songs. WHAT AN OPPRESSIVE SONG. Reminds very much of the song "Puppe" from the last album or "Wiener Blut" from Liebe ist für alle da (2009). Especially at the very beginning of the 1st sounds of the guitar but also lyrically. In this song, is about a toxic relationship between mother and adult son. The mother takes out the hate (beatings) and contempt on her son, because her relationship with the father went to pieces. The son tries to take on the father/husband role but without success. Unfortunately, the son does not dare to defend himself and even to counter violence, he lets the blows patter on him. The mother always has the man image in front of her eyes, that a man does not cry and does not show any emotion. But as the son starts to cry, she has only pure contempt left and declares him a weakling. The lyrics state: A man only cries when his mother dies, Death is strong the heart is weak, When your own flesh and blood spoils, the wiser gives in. Probably the best song on the record!!!! What a lyrical masterpiece from Mr Lindemann!!!!

This song is deep. I like it when there's a twist in the story. Litany, has reference to the Catholic Church and describes an alternate prayer with a prayer leader. I understand this to mean that the mother tells the man exactly how to behave, just as he should not show his tears in public, because otherwise one might infer the mother's abusive behavior.

In german language there are several meanings of the word litany (Litanei). First the meaning you've already explained and then there is a kind of colloquial negative meaning which is nothing more than praying the same thing over and over again to one person. Little example: If I tell you the same story over and over again, then you could say to me: "The same litany as ever." (GER: "Die gleiche Litanei wie immer.") :)

As far as i understand it, the son (single child) sings about the relationship with his abusive (single)mother. After loosing the father, deliberate or not, she circles her entire life around her role as a mother. She can't really show him love since she only imitates what she thinks a loving mother would do. Since he grows older, she sees him more as a man than a child and punishes him for not being man enough, while still forcing him in the child role. I know someone who got pregnant and banned the father from seeing his child until he gave up and now feeds her kid with hate about the father. She always keeps her son close and no one is allowed to touch or hold him except her. (She says, she wants him to have positive memories only with her) This song reminded me very strongly of what i guess, they will end up as. I don't think the "forced on her lap" line has any sexual meaning. In germany it's very normal for sons to sit in their mothers lap for comfort when their young. Normally the son gets sick of it long before the mother does and stops doing it, needy mothers however force their sons far longer to keep doing it. Litany is a prayer, but in this context has to be interpreted as complaining in a preaching tone. --------------------------------------------- What makes me uncomfortable about the song is the refrain: Der Tod ist stark, das Herz ist schwach - Death is strong, the heart is weak Wenn das eigen Fleisch und Blut verdirbt - When your own meat and blood spoils Der Klügere gibt nach - the cleverer/wiser gives in The hole song reads like a letter and the refrain as the final point in a suicide note. He isn't strong enough to leave his mother, but he can't suffer to stay. So he takes a solution that is stronger than himself, death. It could be, that i read to much into the refrain, but i can't shake the feeling.

Your analys of the song is quite accurat imho. Though, I would like to add one thing too, I think that Till does also breaks a taboo here, which could give the first part of the song an...even darker meaning. And that is, that the mother maybe even sexual abuses her son. The phrase _she forces me on her lap_ can be seen that she not only does it because of that man being her son, but also she sees him as some sort of compensation for the lost father or any other man. Another hint could be the phrase _the house has been long missing a man, I help put as good I can._ That she manipulated him so much, that he thinks it's his duity to take on that role and its tasks, of a husband. I think that Till maybe criticised here, that both cases are even in our modern society, treated differently. Most people tend to believe a woman more, when she is saying she was abused in anykind of way. If it is the other way around though (especially when it comes to sexual abuse), many people find it more unbelievable. Which is partly the fault of the media, since whenever a criminal which has committed crimes like these, is potrayed in a tv Show or series, it's a man. While people do forget, that the other way around can also happen, even if it's more rarely. At least that's my take on it.

No, a litany is a list of bad things that have, or can, happen. Usually in church, where the congregation answers three times: Deliver us Lord. And the fourth time: Lord have mercy. It goes on and on in those blocks of four 'bad things'. At the end: Lord deliver us sinner from all evil, have mercy on our souls, pray for us, support us, for we are not worthy of thy blessings... etc etc. Example: From the plundering by the Vikings >> Deliver us Lord. Most funny, mother tells him to be a man, but when he acts like one she cant stand him. Grow up! But when he does she wants him to be her boy. Get a girlfriend! But rejects every woman he gets around with as not good enough. That kind of mother!

Oh boy, really nice reaction dude! It's really hard to understand this literal translation. At first it's a story which he tells. But at first sight it's deeper you can imagine. A wife with a background and maybe a childhood where every man (her father, even mother was nasty hard) has to be strong. The defender, overall man whom words are melted into stone. Those time / area we know from our parents or grandparents live in our minds. And his mother, even though if he is a child, she has a perspective from childhood which is stronger than the reality. And she want's that every man has to be like back from her believing (mother, history). His father was not like that and broke up to committing suicide 'cause of her. But then he has to live along with his mom. As a child, it's just your mom and you don't even care how her mindset is. But when you don't have a father anymore you'll be replaced as a man figure. Regardless if you are a boy (child) or an old man. His mom had her mindset and he know's that he can't replace himself with HER mindset even when he dies. Yeah weird story. But I like those story telling from Rammstein. Because all over this world not all is even and behave the same like in other families.

Litany means a little argument here. I wonder if there is secretly an even darker end of this story: She says death is strong and the own blood is spoiled, "the wiser head gives in". This could mean that she is willing to kill herself or him, to put an end to the misery and free herself or her son. She seems to take the evil part in this but it also takes the other submissive part to keep such an unhealthy relationship going and her inner demon seems to be rage. So she is not a feminist, she became a man hater, a sexist.

The lap thing probably isn't an outright sexual abuse reference. It's a smothering or codependent maternal relationship. It's a contradiction: your mom's lap is supposed to be safe and comforting but this mother is the opposite. Dysfunctional maternal dynamics with men can be very odd as boys aren't supposed to emulate their moms but if they lack an active present dad then how can they learn to be a man when it's taught and not innate knowledge? Yeah I can see how one would be fucked up if they grew up without a loving and nurturing mother. Just don't be cruel and treat the child like you want him as a son and that you'll always help him out if he's willing to help himself. It's really not that hard to fulfill that emotional guarantee with a child.

And "Wenn das eigen Fleisch im Blut verdirbt" -- on many lyrics sites it's misheard as "Wenn das eigen Fleisch und Blut verdirbt" -- "when your own flesh and blood spoils/decays" instead of "when your flesh spoils/decays in blood" exactly because it's so suggestive of incest. "eigen Fleisch und Blut" -- "own flesh and blood" is a family, especially children. "Verdirbt" also suggest both physical and moral decay, to say that human flesh is fallen through Adam's sin is "Fleisch ist verdorben durch Adams Fall".
