I remember when this first came out and the criticism of how the cops were "quick to violence" and that they "escalated the situation" were met by very few people who actually knew what happened. I'm glad that they released the footage this way, so that you can see that the officers tried very hard to get this man the help he needed but he was just too wound up and probably drunk to understand what was happening, and that made him a danger to everyone.

I don't think the police are the problem. The police follow the directions provided by the DA and City Council. If they say don't arrest for these lists of crimes because the person arrested will not be prosecuted, then the police aren't going to waste their time arresting people or potentially getting injured or killed arresting someone who will just have the charges dropped. Good policing requires police trained and willing to perform the job, DA and courts willing to aggressively prosecute criminals, a political machine willing to endorse and support that system of holding people accountable, and a population willing to pay for and support all that is required, including with tax dollars. California pays a lot in taxes, mostly for policies that are actively working to prevent sending people to jail if they are seen as marginalized members of society, like the homeless. California politicians will tell you everything would be fixed if we provide free shelter, free food, free drugs, free medical care, etc. to the homeless. There are so many services and programs that come before arrest, including (unfortunately) services for those people who seem obviously violent.

That was one of the few 911 calls I could listen to. It was clear, the caller was calm, the operator asked short, pertinent questions. He responded in short, direct answers. I know it sounds weird, but some of these I can't listen to.

As someone who’s worked around 5150s in my line of work, I heard multiple instances where Francisco could be admitted under a 5150 hold. I heard him threaten the officer saying he’ll end him in a millisecond which could be determined as a threat. An individual like that should not be on the streets, but with our current economic and political landscape, people like this are far too common and fail to get medial help and intervention.

They can sleep anywhere, they don't get arrested for stealing, they can walk around with a weapon... yet the citizens are still pretty complacent. In their mind, getting tough with the homeless problem is a mean thing to do, so they prefer risking public safety over hurting the feelings of the homeless. It's societal Stockholm Syndrome, and it's not gonna change. in their minds, the problem is always the police, the system, capitalism - nothing is the fault of individuals no matter how badly they behave. They're the real victims of their circumstance. Until that mentality changes, L.A. and other big cities will become zoos where the citizens aren't even able to protect themselves.
