The 4-150 should have no trouble with your disc. When I was still working for the Oliver dealer (actually White by then) the only temperature problems we came across were thermostat, radiator and water pump issues. I know that you've replaced the thermostat already. I never saw any over heating problems that where due to a flaw in the Cat 3208. I recall two tractors that I personally repaired. One had a radiator that I found to have quite a few blocked tubes. We sent that to be flushed but the radiator shop told us that it had to be re-cored. That fixed his overheating problem. The other tractor had a water pump problem. When I pulled it off it just didn't look right... there was hardly anything left of the flights on the pump impeller. As it turned out the farmer had a leaky pump seal and replaced the pump with something he bought at NAPA. I replaced the NAPA pump with a genuine CAT part (and got the radiator flushed for good measure) and that solved that problem. The only other problem I could think of would be cavitation but, I'm not aware of that being an issue with the 3208. At any rate, there is something wrong here but I'm pretty sure it can be fixed for a relatively low cost.

You would really benefit from a double set of rolling baskets. It definitely helps leave a nice level finish.
@lukestrawwalkerАй бұрын
yes... the drag is okay but the rolling baskets do SO much more good! I did a video about it on my channel a few years back. The rolling baskets crumble the clods and break them up, and give enough "flip" to leave the clod fragments on top while giving enough "press" to firm up the finer soil underneath so that the planter has a nice stable firm moist seedbed to run on, rather than mushing through loose, powdery dry soil covered with clods... WAY easier on the planter and better results! The drag harrow will give stuff a 'flip" to help break up clods a little, but with only one bar it's not going to do much... better than nothing, but not a lot. Problem is the drag gives NO firming action at all... it just flips and fluffs a bit more. SO you're leaving behind a loose, fluffy air-impregnated soil that dries out and STAYS dry because no moisture can wick up through all those air pockets... and planting into air pockets and loose, fluffy dry soil isn't any good... plus the planter is having to bulldoze its way through that stuff, firming it up by the weight of the planter unit pressing down on the gauge wheels so they're having to mash the loose ground down and firm it up as they go, which is a lot harder on the planter gauge wheel arms, and the parallel arms and units themselves as well as the planter as a whole... Back when I was row cropping, we used to plant behind the last hipper pass anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks or so later... we planted on beds so the row disk (hipper) built up the beds on the last pass, but left it kinda loose and fluffy with some clods on top. Sometimes we'd have a rain or two in between the last pass and planting which would break down the clods and leave it crusted, firmed up, and relatively flat, but sometimes it wouldn't rain and we'd be planting directly onto the worked up beds... loose dirt and clods and all... In the old days Grandpa or Dad would usually make a drag harrow pass ahead of the planter. Since I was basically a one-man show most of the time, I had to figure out a better way. I started off adding a drag bar on the back of the hipper for the last pass... pulled by chains about 10 feet behind the hipper, it gave time for the clods to hit and roll and the beds to settle down a hair before the drag bar came along and dragged off the top of the bed... took the clods with it usually broke them up pretty good, and left a nice, flat surface for the planter to run on... BUT the drag gave NO firming action whatsoever... The planter still wanted to "roll in" the loose soil as the gauge wheels rolled over it, usually pushing a couple inch high "wave" of loose soil ahead of them as they packed it down while the opener was creating the furrow for the seed to drop into... just hard on everything, and if the ground was the least bit wet the gauge wheels wanted to ball up because they were pushing wet clumpy soil on top ahead of them... no bueno... SO I found a pair of rollers someone had sent to the salvage yard that I often bought parts from, and I picked them up for nearly nothing. Added a couple hitch plates to the back of the hipper to pull them, and voila-- now I was pulling a pair of pipe rollers... it worked fantastic! The rollers running behind the hipper would roll the clods down and crush them apart or at least push them down level and left a nice, flat, smooth, FIRM area for the planter to run on... sometimes if it was really damp it would be sticky on the rollers because now they were pushing the little wave of loose wet soil ahead of them, but I welded on a couple scrapers and that solved that problem... the rollers firmed up the seedbed and allowed moisture to wick right up to the surface, so I was always planting into good firm moist soil, instead of sometimes into powdery dry soil firmed up by the planter wheels which then would wick moisture up from below over a few day's time and create conditions moist enough for germination... Planting into moist soil get things off to a faster, better start! I'd DEFINITELY recommend the rolling baskets... they do an even better job!

Yep definitely.. diesel is cheaper than chemicals... for sure. Yeah you're burning 2-3X as much diesel dragging a tillage implement than you are a sprayer, but RU isn't cheap nor is anything else you have to put in there to make it work, and it just contributes to resistance in the weeds you're trying to eliminate making the chemical that much less effective when you REALLY need it! Haven't found a weed yet resistant to cold hard steel...
@lukestrawwalkerАй бұрын
V-8's have way less torque capability than inline sixes... an inline six is the way to go when you want real power with lugging capability which is exactly what you need in a farm tractor or heavy truck. V-8's can crank out the horsepower, but that's only half the story... horsepower is what GETS you going, accelerating a heavy load up to speed, BUT it's TORQUE that KEEPS you going when the going gets tough... that's why engines lug down... goes from high rpm's to the lower rpm range where its producing maximum TORQUE.
