You are going to love a disc mower over a haybine. Other than needing a big tractor to work them, the productivity is worth it.

He doesn't need a tractor that big but he has nothing else a better size that can. For example at my brother's we run this same mower but the newer version on a 5711 Massey which is about 90 PTO HP although his doesn't swing back to transport it just tips up into a vertical position.

Disk mowers can be tilted back a little bit-- that's how you basically control the cutting height... you want a little downpressure on the cutterbar while working, but not much-- it has to be able to float, and the more weight (downpressure) on it the faster the skid shoes will wear out, plus its harder on the cutterbar and pivots and mechanisms... plus more likely to get damaged if it runs into something... make sure that the safety breakaway isn't rusted up and can disengage freely if the cutterbar runs into an obstruction. You can tilt the cutterbar forward for a shorter cut, and tilt it further back for a higher cut (stubble height). You want to make sure that there's room for the cutterbar to float UP AND DOWN as well as tilt side to side to ride over high and low spots in the field. Tilting the cutterbar too far forward is more likely to jam it into the ground if it drops in a hole or rut... plus you can virtually shave the field which basically is very hard on the grass because it doesn't leave enough stubble for rapid regrowth and can hurt your stand. My drum mower basically is meant to run virtually level, maybe a tiny bit down in front because the blades stick out all the way around the drum and if it's tilted back, will tend to recut the stubble behind the drum and that robs a TON of horsepower as well as overloads the belt drive and gearbox... not good. Height on it is set by a pair of "setscrews" that you turn in or out on top of the drums, which lower or raise the skid saucers under the drums that ride on the ground. Mine is easy to set you basically unfold it and then lower the 3 point until the pins are about halfway down each of the slides (elongated holes)-- there's a slide on the top of the mast that allows the outer end of the cutterbar to rise and fall over ground irregularities, just above the counterbalance springs which take the weight of the drums and gearbox so only a limited amount of weight is being carried by the skid saucers under the drums, the counterbalance springs put most of the weight of the drums and gearbox onto the 3 point... then there's an inner or lower slide bracket that allows the inner end of the cutterbar (drums) and the pivoting side of the headstock to move up and down over ground irregularities... Sometimes if the ground is rough I'll pick up on the 3 point a little more and run it closer to the end of the slots, pulling harder on the counterbalance springs to minimize the weight that the saucers are having to carry... which means it floats easier over the rough ground with less drag. Since yours is all hydraulic, you'll have to set the proper amount of float and downpressure using the hydraulics... that's why you REALLY need a book, because I have a feeling that if you run the thing wrong, set it up wrong, etc. you'll break stuff or tear stuff up. You probably should go online and find a book for that thing or go to a Pottinger dealer or whatever you have to do to get a book for it... sometimes the book can give you the tips and tricks to save yourself a TON of headaches and wallet aches...

Well on the Top Link it screws to either lengthen or shorten it, when connecting any implements to the three point linkage always put the left arm first, then the right that also has a screw adjustable height.

That's a good manufacturer that's held in high regards over here... Good mowers to.. for me though that cutting width is heavy out on the side of a tractor but of your ground let's u is really nice way of cutting all the grass especially on headlands.. stay safe 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

sounds about normal, here around in upper austria alot of these are used even though most of those are butterfly combinations with one in the front of the tractor too

My son bought a mower similar than that meaning it hooks up like that. It's fairly new the guy he bought it from only used it a couple of times then quit. Anyway its blue and not as heavy looking as yours. He put it on his 656 picked it up and could move because the front end was off the ground and his tractor was a hydrostatic and there wasn't enough flow to run it. So he borrowed a 7700 ford. It worked good but he ended up buying a 9700 ford and it seems to work better on it. The one difference I saw was he only has one hydraulic hose hook up and the rope to swing it. There must be the difference of not a leveling switch he levels it with the three point but after he got it figured out he really likes it. He won't let me drive it but I am glad he found it.his first try at cutting was a mower conditioner new Holland the wobble box blew apart the first round or so and he decided to find this one so far he really likes it. Thanks for your videos Jacob hope your harvest goes well for you

It's a new way of doing things... that's for sure... got its drawbacks and advantages, like everything else. What's nice is, you can EASILY run TWICE as fast as you can with a sickle machine... basically as fast as you can stay in the seat. I've heard of some guys mowing up to 10 mph, but IMHO that's kinda crazy, hit anything at that speed the machine is a goner... I run in sixth gear 1800 rpm or so on my 5610S with my Zweegers drum mower, 6 mph all day long never miss a beat. Doesn't matter what it is. Only time I have to slow down is if the blades are getting worn cutting tough stuff like bahiagrass, which I hate that stuff anyway. Dallisgrass, pasture grass, meadow grass, bluestem, mixed stand, wheat/oats/rye, johnsongrass, bermudagrass, doesn't matter, it can be waist high and so thick you can't walk through it and it'll cut it at 6 mph if the blades are sharp. Basically your main limit to speed is how fast you can turn and how rough the ground is. What's nice about a drum or disk mower is, you just put it down, turn it on, and GO... I just roundy-round, some guys like to pick up and cut back and forth, but usually with an offset RH mower you cut roundy-round. I don't worry about the corners, I can make a pretty tight corner even at 6 mph and if I leave a little "crescent moon" of uncut stuff in the corner, last pass through the field once I get to the center, I make an "X" cut out and back to each corner, usually at one end, then make the last pass down the field cutting the center last uncut swath and do an "out and back" from the center to each corner and back to the center, then cut out to the corner by the gate and make the last pass along the fence cutting where the tractor ran by the fence on the first pass around the field, going the opposite direction. What's nice is a disk or drum won't clog on previously cut grass, it just spits it out the back or slides over it, unlike a sickle which doesn't like going through previously cut stuff without clogging up. You can cover some ground fast even with a 7 foot drum mower, course 9 foot is nicer you get done that much faster... but when we parked the old Ford 501 Pitman mower and bought the Zweegers 7-2 drum mower, I thought I was mowing at light speed by comparison... and it'll zip right through anthills or crawdad chimneys or stuff that would clog up a sickle and have you getting off with a screwdriver to dig the mud out of the guard or section... BIG time saver!

Jacob you need the chains that hook to inside where the three point arms hooks up it’ll stop your arms at the same point every time

Boehm Farm, helpful hint. First get your tractor as square to the 3 point equipment you want to hook up. Connect the lift lower link first, then use the screw crank adjuster for the right lower arm then move your arms up or down to get the top link hooked up. That’s the correct way to do it. Hope this is helpful, way too many people do it backwards making it very frustrating.👍🙏🏽✌🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸

Then you screw up the level between the arms so they're not running level... unless you count how many turns you crank the handle to raise or lower that RH arm to get it on the pin, and then turn it back. Easier to just raise or lower the machine to get the other lower arm on IMHO... at least you don't screw with the level setting of the arms to each other...

@@lukestrawwalker your arms are to be able to let you put them on the pins of the machine. The pins of the machine should in most cases be of equal hight but they do not have to be . This is why you have an adjustable lower link lifting arm. After the piece of the equipment has been attached then you make your up down to level and top link in out for what ever the machine requires. You heard him say I need to shorten the top link. It’s because he was setting up the equipment the way he wants it. As for the lifting part both arms are going to do the lifting . It does not matter the length of the arm .

Before you actually mow anything with it swing the drawbar off to the side so pto shaft can not hit it if 3ppint goes too low, also you ideally want stabliser bars on linkage arm so it doesnt slop side to.side and also top link lenghr adjusts cut height

Yep death for sure... they cut by having the disks spinning around 2,700-3,000ish RPM, so those little lawnmower size blades can slice right through anything. TONS of gears and idler gears in that cutterbar PLUS the spinning conditioner flails... wait til you get it under a load and hear the noise! MAKE SURE that you check the oil in the cutterbar and stuff before you cut, and periodically in the season, because they HAVE to run in an oil bath or it'll cook the bar, and that gets expensive and hard to fix REAL quick... always check your blades before each cutting session-- make sure they're all free to pivot (they can build up with grass and dirt which can "lock" them up to the disk so they can't swing back freely, that's no bueno. Blade life will depend on what you're cutting and how tough it is (species of grass, amount of weeds, etc) and the type of soil you're running on (sandy soil tends to be harder on blades, if you have gopher mounds or ant hills or crawdad chimneys that the mower is zipping off... etc). Blades are usually reversible by flipping or swapping between disks, depends on the mower. My drum mower, if I'm cutting tough cutting bahia grass in sandy soil with anthills, I can get anywhere from about 30-40 acres on a new set of blades and then I have to swap them from one drum to the other to use the backside of the blade (double edged) by reversing the blade's rotation direction. OF course the drum mower is cutting a 3 foot+ wide swath versus these disks cutting about a foot or so wide swath each, BUT the disks only have 2 blades per turtle where the drum has four blades per drum... In easier cutting grass like bluestem or dallisgrass on clay soil that's smooth with few anthills, I might get 40-50 acres of cutting before I have to reverse the blades. Usually the blades seem to last a bit longer after they're swapped for some reason. The mower will let you know when its time to swap blades-- they become a real power hog and the stubble starts looking raggedy... With disk mowers, depending on how much and what they're cutting conditions are like, I've heard guys say they can get a season out of a set of blades, with one reversal or swap sides at some point... naturally if you're cutting a lot of ground and hard stuff, the blades will wear faster and you'll have to change them more often. I used to cut the roadsides for hay, 5 miles to town both sides of the road and about 5 miles out from the farm to the river bridge, and the drum mower would just zip right through it... one time I heard a gawdawful buzzing and looked back, and saw one of those BIG, thick, spoked fancy hubcaps off a Cadillac, that they used to put on those cars, which came off a car and rolled down into the ditch... the drum mower had zipped ir right in two and spat the two sawed apart halves right out the back without ever missing a beat! Running in the pasture in overgrown tangled grass she was zipping right along at 6 mph and buzzing it right off at the ground, exposing all these rat trails in the undergrowth... had hawks flying over the field patrolling and diving on the field once in awhile. At one point I got off the tractor and had a stretch and walk around for a minute or two, and I saw the back half of a big fat Norway rat laying on the ground... the front half was halfway down its hole it was diving into when the mower caught up with it and neatly bisected it like a scalpel and tossed the back half out the back. SO yeah nothing that goes under that curtain comes out alive...

AND now you know why they sold it... hooking up is a total PITA... plus it's a LOT of weight to carry if it's making that TW light in the front... I'd never buy a conditioner mower for the 3 point... pull type or nothing. Not so bad if you can put it on a tractor and leave it for the entire season, but still... when you have the mower off the ground, the ENTIRE weight of the machine is being held up by the right lower 3 point arm... and is being cantilevered (held down) by the left lower 3 point arm which is being pushed up on by the mower headstock... so basically one arm is carrying the entire weight of the mower and the other is being levered upwards by the weight of the everything the other side of the right arm minus whatever weight is left of the right arm... I have a 7 foot 2 inch Zweegers drum mower that folds straight back and the 5610S Ford has maybe a couple hundred pounds of weight on the front wheels when the mower is in up for transport... so nearly the entire weight of the mower and tractor is on the back wheels... just crazy LOL:) My next mower will be a pull type or a 3 point model on a caddy-- back up drop the pin raise the jack hook up one hose and PTO and go grease it and go to the field... or a pull type with a conditioner...
