Explained CG, stall recovery, aerodynamic principles, short distance takeoff procedures, and general emergency procedures far better than my ground school class did Imagine a modern flight school class being beaten by a WW2 training film

The "pilot's worst nightmare" sequence shows how some of the best of Hollywood worked on these movies.

It's crazy how thin everyone was back then before we invented high fructose corn syrup and twinkies.

Were these professional actors playing the part of aircrew or aircrew drafted in as actors?

Center of gravity right and proper trim on flying surfaces made it surprisingly light on controls. Of course wing fuel levels must be managed to maintain trim. A belly landed plane would be good for parts only. Simply not worth the risk to fly her again. Field repair a broken wing spar I don’t think so.

Interesting, but I thought "emergency operations" in 1944 was bringing the bomber home with half a wing missing and a big hole in the vertical stabilizer.

Half a wing missing on a B-17 is generally an unrecoverable situation, but a holed vertical stabilizer mainly involves watching your speed, being gentle with controls, and minimizing slip/skid to keep forces on the structure to a minimum.

"CG induced flight instability" I hate that Computer Graphics induced flight instability in Dogfight documentaries...

It’s always that way...the young ones go, but then they age quickly.

I hope these are actors. Bad actors.

The idea was to really get the point across. This ham scripted acting and music, suitably illustrated, actually make it a much better learning experience than a dry lecture. Hollywood was very much part of Total War.
