If you want to catch a ride on Boeings B757-300 in Europe, chances are great that you will end up with Condor. The fares are rather ok, and the experience is exactly that what you would expect from any other low cost carrier. Food and drinks were not for free (except a bottle of water), even on a five-hour flight, but prices are average. Some B757-300 routs are flown as charter, others as scheduled traffic. The B757-300 is nicknamed “the long misery” (Das Lange Elend) by the crews, since boarding and de-boarding can take ages. But for this flight to Gran Canaria, passengers stormed the plane rather quickly. The sound and the feeling of the B757 is unique, especially with it’s Rolls Royce engines. Maybe it was due to the high load factor and the fact that the plane flew for nearly five hours, but take off’s on B757, especially the -200, can be more sporty. In any case it is always nice to fly on one of Germany’s classic touristic routs with a rather rare airliner. Las Palmas to many may still be connected with LTU’s L1011s and Condor’s DC-10s, and even though these times have long gone by, seeing all those B757-300s lined up in Gran Canaria will be a picture enthusiasts will miss in a few years to come!
