In this video I will give you a brief description of the function and use of the different lights we have on the Boeing 737-800.
When do we use them? why are they there and how do the controls look?

The LED lights on the newer 737s are so much brighter than the incandescent ones. I live around 50 miles from the coast of England and you can see the lights come on as they pass 10,000ft on their way into Stansted.

Couple of things--the anti-collision lights are meant to increase visibility of the airplane in flight. Using them to alert ground crews to engine runs and so forth is secondary. The wheel well lights have a switch in the cockpit, as well as in or adjacent to the wheel wells, because the "classic" 737 aircraft have viewer devices in the floor of the airplane that allow a crew member to look at a part of the landing gear downlock mechanism in flight and verify a down-and-locked condition for landing if the normal indication system did not function. Because of this, the aircraft could not be dispatched if a light in the wheel well was burned out. On the 737NG and later, the viewers are not installed because two landing gear position sensors and indicators are installed for each gear. The wheel well lights remain to assist in inspecting equipment in the wheel wells on the ground, which tend to be dark even in daylight. For those questioning which lights are installed on each airplane, or which lights may be inoperative, download the PDF from FAA of Boeing 737 Master MEL and look at Chapter 33--LIGHTS. You will see what a difficult task flight crew, maintenance, and dispatchers have in answering those questions. Luckily each operator (airline) has a MEL document customized for the particular aircraft model and equipment options, which simplifies the task somewhat.

Is there any way the pilot can communicate with ATC tower using the lights, in case there's a radio failure?
@casilasgoaler
@casilasgoaler 7 жыл бұрын
Mr Me In smaller aircrafts, there a radio failure or no radio procedure. You come in for the approach and rock wings (turn right and left) and this procedure will make the ATC understand about your radio failure. Some people also blink the landing light on and off but am not sure if that's a standard procedure. So once you rock wings, the tower will guide you with a light gun, and there are several light gun signals that any pilot should have memorised at any given time should their be a radio failure. You are taught that in ground class in your PPL stages itself. As for bigger aircrafts, they usually have a transponder and they squawk 7600 for communication failure so the tower knows that the radio has failed. Though I am not sure if the lights can help in any way, but I hope my answer gives some basic idea about the concept.

Shafat Hasan Isnt squawk code an easier procedure?
@casilasgoaler
@casilasgoaler 7 жыл бұрын
Good question. Yes the Squawk code is the option used in airliners and big aircrafts. But in most GA planes, we fly VFR and we don't always have a functional transponder. Most GA planes lack transponder and / or don't use it, hence the only way is the light gun signal, as in, rocking wings to let the tower know our situation.

Dear Captain, since few years i have been noticing white lights in strobe, takeoff and landing lights on new aircraft of 737, 787, a350 and a320. Were the lights originally yellow earlier? And is there really a specific reason for having white light? (Like better illumination or less power consumption due to LED light etc).

@arturoeugster7228 Жыл бұрын
lift is caused by circulation, controlled by the trailing edge flow, called the Kutta condition The winglets increase the effective wing span and therefore reduce the induced drag, which is proportional to the square of the spanloading. The winlets increase like the biplane the apparent mass of the air deflected downwards. That is it. You might read up the publications of prof. Dr Barnes McCormick, who describes the exact theory of wings. Pennsylvania state University.
